contest Growdown Throwdown 2019 Sri Lanka - Chilli Red!

There are numerous reasons for these kinds of contests to be exclusive. Back in 2011 or 2012 when this started,we had always talked about selecting people and adding more yearly that we knew would participate. It looks bad morally,but the no-shows and vultures are what ruin these. And now entitled folks obviously.

Every year I toss out the option of having numerous contests branched off of this one. Not to take away from this,but to add more options. Mano y mano's,fastest to ripe pods,biggest stems,etc. It would bring traffic to this site,add options for people who garden indoors or even international players.

For me,these were always about the plants and camaraderie. The explosion of social media has really zapped my interest in this hobby. People have 300 varieties of seeds and trade them all around before even growing one. It was fun when it took 2 years to get a seed you wanted,and you made a friend in that trade.

Don't let all the dummies on the internet bring you down. Pr0digal_son you have some amazing threads with great pictures that will have people trying out your favorite types well into the future. I want to grow less varieties this year and try to give the peppers I do grow a better evaluation. One day I want to get it down to a few varieties that I grow every year

Amen. This year was certainly the most people interested in seed by far, and I knew when the emails started coming in and comments starting hitting the thread that there was going to be some things that end up being petty. I run a tight ship here though, so have no problem with telling people to hit the road. Hate that I have to but I will. 
 
This is also the reason I made votes public this year. So we can name the no shows and vultures publicly, hahaha

then I find a handful of badass varieties and smuggle them back through customs...
 
then i get to germinating...
 
then I get to building soil...
 
then there are 100's of lbs of peppers to be picked...

For 15 years I was happy growing ignorantly, planting a row of Anaheims, a row of Jalapeno, a row of Bells....That was all.
 
Then one day two years ago I went looking for a flavor I remembered from my younger days, and I wound up here doing thread searches for Aji Amarillo....Then my world blew up. What was one small corner of the 8th acre turned into half of the garden. For the first time in my life I needed a map of what was what in my own garden! I learned that peppers were perennial, I have 15 overwinters and a half dozen cloning attempts in the Darlin' Bride's pantry.

And YOU!! It isn't bad enough but YOU come in with your growdowns and your mesmerizing exotic pepper vacation vids and your absolutely naztay fertilizer recipes.

I agree with Andy (Walchit) don't let the vultures bring you down.
THP still rocks for pepper growers.  I just miss some of the 'old timers'
from my first couple of seasons on THP.  Maybe they just hang out
somewhere else on the forum. Every so often, when I see a post from
one of them, it makes me feel good to know they are still in business.

I'm in total agreement with the SASE concept, I know many seeds went out last year, and not so many were part of the contest. For those out of the country just send 2 bucks in an envelope along with the SASE. US currency is everywhere...

Take an envelope and write your address on it to be delivered to yourself.

Put the necessary postage on it to be delivered to yourself.

Place into another envelope and mail it to guru.

Seeds will be sent to you in your pre addressed stamp envelope.

Wouldn't hurt to include bubble wrap or something to protect seeds.
 
Ok, took a "nibble" out of a Sri Lanka Chili Red that Mr. MaGuru sent with his Aji Lemon Drop sauce.

HOOT! Scott was right, this gal has a bite! Tobasco-esque but hotter, these are going to be great for powder or a yummy sauce. Heat lingered about 10 minutes and dropped off quickly when it was done with me. No tears but I'm still sniffling 20 minutes later.

A good little pepper, it only had 8 seeds to surrender.

They definitely arent all like that, those are the smaller end of the pod scale for the entirety of the season, and the the most like pheno 2 pods. Some of them will be much bigger and contain more seeds, closer resembling a cayenne. Most will be shaped like the ones you got. The pheno 2 had a distinct wrinkle at the top of the pod where the calyx attaches, where as the larger pheno more closely resembled a large cayenne and had generally smooth round shape, gradually coming to a point.

These (pheno 2) produced many more fruit and had a much more striking and complex flavor(sweet, bursting juices, followed by almost chinense heat but not quite) , where as pheno 1 had a more deep, Smokey, hearty flavor much like a standard cayenne or paprika.

There was even a third pheno that I hated, it almost had a mutant-y quality. Super tiny aborted shaped pods, no good for nothing. Huge plants and huge calyx stems with teeeny tiny little nothings turned red on the end. Worthless.

I never kept seeds from those over the last three years, only the other two phenos that came from seeds contained in one of the original dried pods from Sri Lanka.

This year pheno 2 really went nuts and exhibited fruit set like no other year before it, so...thats what everyones getting seeds from.

These are open pollinated again, like last year, so start a handful and keep your favorite for the contest to weigh from.
