growers need your help

Hello just had a question about growing some herbs like basil, oregano etc.
since i don't think herb's need as much light as my pepper plants I was thinking that i could keep them under a couple 6500k cfl's would this work.

It should. I was actually considering doing this myself with basil. You just can't beat fresh basil. I love it on grilled cheese sandwiches.

Basil and oregano will do very well with same ammount of light as chillis, but they can cope with less

i just cant see using 30,000 lumen s to grow some simple herbs

Growers need my help?
Cool just pay my air fair and give me a job. It's a good thing I haven't started any seeds (this fall) myself. Seriously I will go wherever God sends me. I want to help start a large pepper/(any plant) growing operation somewhere.
Show us pics of your Basil when you get it going.

I've grown Basil using shop lights. 2- 4' tubes. 1 Grow tube and day light tube. That was a long time ago . I think one of those CFL jobs would do super.

Peace ,

Basil will grow fine with just one 26w CFL, it can even be a warm white bulb. The flavor is a less intense that that grown outdoors, but it's still good.

Not about chillis so moved to 'growing - other'.

Most herbs are the easiest things to grow, as long as you have good soil then light isn't such a big issue.....I know a guy here at work that grows one basil plant just under the general office fluro's and it does perfectly fine.....

IGrow,

Thanks for the link - read it a few years ago! It needs to be updated because there are LED bulbs that deliver over 100 lumens per watt and they are 100 percent PAR photons.

I do agree - for seedlings, I do not think that dollar for dollar, including cost of fixtures, coverage, etc., one can beat CFL lights. But for Greenhouse Lighting, CFL and even the T5HO lights are not as effective. One has to take into account the intensity of the light and that's where the latter bulbs are lacking. The goal is to have as many photons of PAR light hitting the plant (and not just the canopy) as possible (measured in PPFD). To be effective, fluoros need to be placed within inches of the plant, which is not a problem with seedlings. But, at least IME, when the plants start to measured in feet rather than inches, the fluoros are going to be next to worthless, unless one wants to run them vertically as well as horizontally.

The guy really does a great job of evaluating lights, though most of his recent experiments have been around LEDs.

Its very important to keep your herbs fairly warm especially when they are germinating, like over 60 degrees. They can be very tender, especially Basil.
