Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.
 
Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol
 
 
Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!
 
Very nice, Rich! I notice that you throw a thin layer of soil over whatever you sprinkle in each hole. I do this exact same thing, not because I read it somewhere, but I did it as a precaution. I put epsom and garden lime in each hole. I don't want the roots touching that. Lol.
Everything is looking great! You're gonna have another fantastic year!

You know it! Good soil/compost is a perfect buffer zone when layering goodies into the planting hole.

This years locally sourced goodies going into holes are:
farm house attic bat guano
alpaca dung
worm castings
jadam style dank tank compost
jadam style dank tank tea
Alfalfa meal
lime of two types


I rode the fine line of planting into some super hot holes and its paying off. I could tell the ph was a smidge low by the leaves for the first week, but weve had some constant, scattered light showers and things have leveled back out.

New growth at nodes is already explosive and in two months I hope to find it hard to walk through the rows.

Total plant count over 100 between the containers and the in ground plants. Nearly 40 varieties of capsicum and some other food items. Needless to say it was a lot of soil prepping, compost acquiring, sweat breaking work. But its done. Now we sit back, take a breather and prepare ourselves for....harvesting.

Wow! That's a stiff drink. That list is full of good stuff. No wonder you be killin' it every year. That's a lot of plants to tend to. Are you growing any wilds this year? I tried germinating Praetermissum twice, but to no avail. So no wilds for me this year, just Annuum, Baccatum, & mainly Chinense. I can't wait to see what you do this year!

No wilds this year! I usually do them, but this year was mostly interesting things sent from others and all the stuff I've brought back from my travels.

Next trip is down island hoping the Caribbean. Not settled on destination, but there must be good waves and peppers. Stay tuned.

Welcome! Also, thank you for subbing on youtube! Lately (past few years) I've been keeping this an on going glog rather than starting new ones each year. Keeps everything in one place. Glad to have you checking us out.

Puerto Rico is nice! We went to the little island by it called culebra. Had a great time. Wish I would have been a pepper junkie then, I'm sute they have something down there
Also seems to be the cheapest air fare from ATL as well! It's in my top 10 list up against DR, Nicaragua, Venezuela, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and even Jamaica. Hard choices to be made here, but budget will play a big role. Trying to do more of an adventure backpacking budget style of travel on this one. Won't have Mrs. Guru so can get a little more out of the normal comfort zones. Find the peppers and find the waves.

You should write a book. There are many men out there that could benefit from this kind of advise.
 
Wow, this glog is nothing but impressive and intriguing at every turn. I'm curious, though, about how you get seeds back home. I'm guessing you have a "Small Lots of Seeds" permit? Or is it something completely different

Many different ways! Generally, after finding the peppers. I photograph and de seed them. Dry the seeds out and fill tea bags with the seeds and label them with a designated symbol. Other times, I just keep the seeds in some folded paper towel and stuff them into my clothes pockets. Lots of different ways

That sounds like a really good system! I was wondering since I'll be visiting the Bahamas soon. I may just have to try it out.
