glog Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.

Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol

Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

Hope everyone has had a decent winter so far and here's to happy germination!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!

Great info all in one sitting. 😃
I must say that I have been growing Organic fruits & vegetables since 1972 including some very boring varieties of pepper early on.
Myself I did not learn anything new, & you missed only one important mistake many people make.

Planting depth. Very important with pepper seeds. No more than 1/8" & keep the soil misted or use a Cold water mister.
Still a very informative video for new Pepper growers, I hope they all watch it.

On my soap box again. Probably tidy up the 7 pod vs scorpion bit eventually, but for now, feel free to correct anything I've gotten wrong, especially the points citing posts here on thehotpepper.

I enjoyed this read but it does tend to minimize the work involved in methodical cross breeding practices, especially intraspecific hybridization. Perhaps another article on that...

Glad you enjoyed it. Could you elaborate on where or to whom I could've given more praise? I know plenty of real hybridizers doing manual emasculation and proper selections, but none of them were doing this pre 1990 (internet telling them how to properly do it) ... and especially not with superhot C chinense genes.

You're probably right. Perhaps another article dedicated to that would be in order. It is a relatively new hobbyist phenomenon.

Good information 🙂 perhaps some AI images may be a bit jarring; it would be nice to replace them with real images, historical drawings or later paintings, if available.

There were no paintings or illustrations depicting the timelines or imagery I wanted to convey for that segment, so I created them myself. Either using photoshop and designing them manually, or prompting various image generation softwares to create them in the style of historical paintings. I felt they came out quite good and very close to what I envisioned. I wanted that Emanuel Luetze style but obviously he wasn’t around in 5000 BCE 🤣

…ok admittedly I sort of got a little carried away with the Santa Rosa First People’s chief blessing the Aji at the end, but you gotta admit, that was COOL! 🤣

Have you ever seen variegated and striped super hots with variegation all the way down the calyx into the fruit exocarp? Striped and variegated Ghosts and Scorpions?

Check these out. Flavor is phenomenal. These are “Hot Pink” that Bryan Townshend hybridized. Im helping flesh out two different lines from this one and Bryan is already onto bigger and better things 😂

There is a big market for ornamentals with this type of foliage, especially in SE Asia. Good work!
These are the first ornamental superhots that I’m aware of. We’ve seen plenty of people incorporating purple anthocyanin into superhot crosses, but Bryan has brought a ton of different variegated traits into these hybrids that I think makes him the first to publish a new genre basically within the pepper scene. Variegated + Stripey Superhots. What’s really crazy…they actually taste as good as they look.
