Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.

Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol

Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

Hope everyone has had a decent winter so far and here's to happy germination!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!

As promised, here is the Official 2018 Garden Walk Through and Year In Review. As you may have noticed by now, our format will not always be the same as everyone else's traditional YouTube channel. Sometimes, I'll want to get more artsy than "informative" and when we have ideas for cool videos, we will run with them. Sometimes there is so much more that can be said by not talking.

I hope you all enjoy the break from the norm and stick around for more content to come! We recommend using your favorite headphones for the best viewing experience. Music: "Infinite Absence" by Cathedral Ring A special thank you to our boys in Cathedral Ring for creating such fitting tunes and allowing us to use them.

Video is set to premiere Monday, December 31st at 8PM EST

Be sure to like and subscribe as well as click on the reminder under the video so you can all watch it with me live as it premieres!

Here is the link where it will go live!

Great video Rich!! Your garden looked amazing!

I'm glad to see that the manzano survived the transition to soil and is still producing. If my memory is correct it means that plant is going on six years old now. Who would of thought that a pepper plant could live that long.

Best wishes for the new year!

Robert

Thanks for the 2018 Garden Walk Through.

I was able to put names on several more of those peppers from the SFRB.

I wonder if that Campana pepper is related to the Bishop's Crown?
Yep! Baccatum. So many names for that pepper! They call it Campana in CR, because its shaped like a bell.

Thank you!

I just hope FB and Youtube can see it too! I've stayed here so long and avoided the other groups like the plague, I've forgotten how petty and misunderstanding people can be.

The name " Pepper Guru" doesn't always make the best first impression on people out there...lol

They don't know me and don't know how much I love and live for helping people GROW MORE PEPPERS!

Next trip and episode of "Traveling The World In Search of Peppers" is in the planning phase now.

I want to hear from you guys!

Options are everything from Puerto Rico to Trinidad/Tobago!

Here's the map!

Where do you think we should go next?

I wasn't thinking about peppers when I went to Puerto Rico, I wish I would have been. But I didn't spend much time on the mainland. I went to a smaller islad, called Culebra, for most of the trip. Its a cool little island. We flew in a tiny plane from Puerto Rico and landed there. It was crazy for me but was also my only time leaving the States. We had a guy take us to this uninhabited island called Culebrita, you have to leave there by 6 because of turtle nesting. It had cool cliffs and beaches, and a bad ass little tide pool.

And if your ever in Culebra, hit up Zacos tacos.

Wow, those islands sure follow the shape of what looks like the outer ridge of a dinosaur-killing meteor crater, don't they....

I got nothin' Rich. They all look like fun. I loved the hills around Ocho Rios, but a lot of those folks there scared the shit outta me....Then again, northwest Haiti was spooky and cool, and the locals were great at pointing out who to avoid.....That's as far out as this old guy has gotten yet, and the Darlin' Bride sez no more gallavantin' for me until I take her to Cabo Wabo and introduce her to Sammy.....

I've been thinking about this pretty hard lately. I've done a lot of the native/latin american side from Mexico to Peru and everything in between. What I haven't done is the African American Caribbean side. The history there is stunning. Learning about how the Arawaks and Caribs were original inhabitants and the affect that Christopher Columbus would have on the region along with the slave settlements and integration. All very interesting history!

I'm contemplating going big and starting somewhere like Cuba/Jamaica then heading on through to Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico and continually island hop our way all the way to Trinidad Tobago. Making an episode for every destination.

I couldn't stand the lack of interactivity on the community tab of the main facebook page, and I couldn't stand all the nonsense, shilling, undercover fan club spies, and constant spam of ads on all the facebook groups, so I created a group without all of that. Its just about growing..no sauce reviews etc...

If anyone does the group thing on fb already, feel free to request to join. It's closed and there will be questions before you're approved. If you're a member on here make sure you include your user name in the answers for faster review. I try to get to them as quickly as humanly possible.
It can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GuruCultivatorsCollective/

Anyway...I guess it's almost that time huh? Seeing everyone get a good jump on the season has been great. I've been lurking around in the glogs and man..there are some real killers out there. Some new and some old school. Very cool. Hope everyone's season is going well and your seeds are germinating at high rates!

I'm growing around 150 varieties this year. I'm growing everything in my seed vault that I've kept up with the past 20 years. Netting everything and building seed inventory.

Seed germination will likely begin tomorrow and I'll film it and make sure to post a youtube update as well.

Will post back with grow list and more updates in a few days.

Happy germing everyone!
