Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Just starting this glog now so it's one less thing to do in a few months when I'm knee deep in compost and getting things in the ground.
 
Not much to report at the moment. Strains yet to be determined, but I'll probably end up growing too many like always...lol
 
 
Only thing that's going on right now is a clean back patio and the chickens doing their part turning over my compost pile on the daily. Intersted in seeing how the soil microbes appreciate the added chicken poop!

EDIT UPDATE: This glog has turned into an ongoing overwintering, greenhouse and soil building how-to!
 
Wow, that was my guess. I knew it wasn't the second one, too wrinkly and no tail, #1 looks like a small Fatale to me, so the two I had originally picked out are on the right. Could you have dropped two on me?
 
My normal hardwood/live stock bedding compost guy is running a few weeks behind this year, but I have a buddy that runs an omri certified humus compost operation pretty locally. I checked out their row fields and like the inputs they use and their process very much. So...I sort of kind of received delivery on about 6 Cubic yards of the stuff today :) Can't wait to get my mix on soon. I have used it in my landscaping business before on important plantings and on sod installs and like it, so...we will see how the peppers like it this year.

Thanks! I've managed to have a few different things that keep me going. When I'm not doing one, I'm doing the other. 
 
I started the landscaping thing around 4 1/2 years ago I guess. Mostly do soft/hardscape installs and keep a very small list of lawn service clients. I pick and choose the work. Currently owner/operator but would love to develop into working ON the business more so than IN it. Slow and steady wins the race I guess.

What's the parentage on your Cobra pepper? I'm gonna have to check out your fb group. I'm not on there, but my gf has an account.

Are you going to Trinidad/Tobago and surrounding areas THIS year, or was that a past travel? I'd LOVE to go there! Where the heat originates (for some). Woohoo! Great stuff!

So the Cobra or "Nai Miris" was gifted to me one morning during breakfast. The owner of the hostel we were in knew I enjoyed spicy as he could get it, so he threw that one on me. It was the ONLY Chinense I saw the entire trip! Here are some passed posts on it:

I pulled a few shots from my trip to Sri Lanka. 
 
Basically, there are only THREE chili's in Sri Lanka. Trust me...I scoured the entire country. 
 
The most common is what they just call "chili". It is available at every market, grocery store, restaurant etc. 
 
Here it is. 
 
This one came with some shrimp biscuits being sold by people that approach the train windows as you stop at stations:

And even unripened green ones, generally used in breakfast curry. Seen here at a street side market in Ella.

Then a very hard to find chili that the locals call "Cobra Chili". This one was presented to me in preparation for a breakfast meal at a hostel after showing the owner some of my pictures from past grows. These generally aren't eaten by the locals in dishes. Only certain uses for this. To me it closely resembles the famous Hoyt Saxton Pumpkin that I used to grow. The genetics of which have long since been lost...until now. Here it is unripe:

Then there are also peppers that look very similar to a banana pepper. They ripen red. Unfortunately I'll have to dig deeper for a photo of that one. I sort of just picked it up off the ground after the market had cleared. 
 
Either way, all three will be featured ion my grow this year. Thought you guys would find that interesting. If you want to see more shots of the trip, I'd be happy to upload them.

Because no one ever goes there! India is great and will certainly be on the destination list, but everyone seems to forget about Sri Lanka.

Herb was good! Definitely sativa dominant and had a up, almost slight mushroom high, similar to Thai. 
 
The coffee wasn't coffee, it was tea. They had the BEST tea in the world. Once at the top of the peak in Ella (hike), there was a man making lemon grass tea up at the top for like .25 cents a cup. The lemon grass was growing wild all over on the way up. We meandered through coffee and chili farms until reaching the trail up to Buddhas hand mountain range. Great views up there for a toke.

Good on ya for getting your travel on while you are
young enough to enjoy it!  My wife and I have travelled
a lot, mostly in Europe, starting when our children were
really young. Best thing we ever did was get them into
traveling at a young age.  They are still into it!
 
I, on the other hand, am slowing down a little  :rofl:

I guess Bhuter asked about it already, but not the taste. I'm not really a fan of sativa, but that mushroom high I would surely enjoy. Lol

I'm with you on the fungi effects! I tend to be more of an indica guy, myself. Until the couch-lock is too much. Like somebody turned up the gravity. Everything gets so difficult. Lol
