Hello from San Diego, California

Back in January I jumped onto a topic on here without introducing myself. I used this forum to take up an issue with another member I disagreed with. So now let the past be the past and go about things the right way. I cannot post as much as I would like to because of how busy I am but will try and share as much as possible. My name is Jim Duffy. Raised in New York and transplanted to San Diego in 1980. Before 2004 I knew very little about chiles. Then my passion for cooking had me compete with my Mexican co-workers in making salsa. After making it so good they wished to buy some from me I had to grow my own. And that my friend opened my eyes to the world of flavor and spice. Or another would say the discovery of Capsicum chinense!! In 2005 after a visit to a Youth Center I expanded my garden so I could make more salsa and also sell chiles so I could do things for the kids there. Things like cook them dinners and buy them tickets to college football and basketball games. Occasionally send some to summer camps. This then became the birth of Refining Fire Chiles. Now my goal is to grow my business so I can be a donor to this outreach and help get these kids off the streets. What I hope to share with you all this year is my older chile pics and now with a new camera my latest garden. I have grown chiles in drip in the ground, in pots, aeroponically and Hydroponically. Last year had over 300 plants in an NFT Hydroponic system. Now this year I pull money out of retirement and go for it. My new garden all grown in pots in Nursery grade soil has over 800 plants for chiles. And also have over 380 plants on 18 scattered properties isolated for seed production. I am single parent with a full time job so this will be interesting. Because of the current economy many donors to these Youth Centers had to stop giving. Now through the Blessing of Chile Peppers I want to take their place. So those of you that pray please pray that this will be a good year for me. Without chiles my bills would not get paid and I would not be able to help these kids. I got a new camera so hopefully my pics when I get a chance to post will be good. I do love growing chiles. But I am so thankful of what chiles have done for me and through me.

Wow what an adventure. 800 plants seems insane. Where do you grow them all and are you using hydro this year or just soil and water?? I read about something like this in Chicago where a guy started off helping a small kids rec center and now has thousands of plants in a large setup. I think local restaurants donate scraps for a HUGE compost / worm farm that he uses to make tea and soil from also contributing to his success and bring in profits for the center.
