Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

I know I've been a total slacker on the updates, but my plants haven't really grown much, so not much to show.

The sole surviving Manzano sprout. This one's a yellow.

One of the strongest growers this season, Tobasco

There are two of these Aji Limo Rojo sprouts, and they are maybe three inches tall, though you can't really tell from the angle of this pic. They have both had the sides of their leaves curling upward ever since they've sprouted, but this one is starting to flatten out.

Not the clearest picture, but this is the oldest of the sprouts. Kind of sad that this little guy is already six weeks old!!!

Trying to get to a few of the other glogs here and there, but dealing with some stressful personal stuff right now, so may not be around much for a little while. I'll try not to go completely MIA.

Not sure how this happened, but two updates in one day! Wahoo!!!

Managed to squeeze in time to pot up a few annuums tonight.

Can you tell which ones were ready for bigger shoes?

Grow table is pretty much maxed out now. Next pot up, someone's going to have to go underneath the table.

I potted up 22 annuums, still waiting on 28 of them to sprout, and have 38 sprouts not quite ready to pot up. So according to my calculations that's a 68% germination rate so far on the annuums. Not bad!

Here's some of the ones that didn't make the cut tonight, and will have to wait until the next round.

And last but not least, look who's got some real leaves now, the lone Purple Bhut sprout.

Okay, I'm done for the day. Hope everyone has a great weekend!!!

Looking fantastic! Love the fuzzy Yellow Rocoto. It's incredible how much root mass/length there can be when so little is seen above the surface.

Great roots there Bonnie! Yard/Plant sale this weekend here. Hope to put together some grow money and make some room for the keepers. Hope your weekend is great as well.

Your grow is absolutely amazing, Shane! Your plants are monsters!!! Wish I was close enough to come by and get your leftovers at the yard sale!

Yup. I concur. Things are looking terrific. Great variety. Maybe we can get some taste reviews this year.

Not sure how interesting my reviews would be since I'm not growing anything superhot, but maybe I'll give it a shot.

Hi Bonnie
Any love from those Ochsenhorn peppers yet?

Not yet, but it's too early to give up on them. I have a Volcano sprouting that was sown 2-17-13, so you just never know!

Yeah, I sure hope that Manzano makes it. Started with nine, and it's the only one left!

TODAY'S UPDATE: Sorry about the quality of some of these photos. It was overcast outside, and even with the lights on in the house, I just couldn't get a decent shot.

They are starting to look like little plants, instead of sprouts now! :P

Discovered a hitchiker in the Cheiro Roxa pot this morning

Some of the annuums are getting their first set of true leaves now.

Costeno Amarillo - Sure hope this one is really Amarillo. Last year's were Rojo.

Going to try and pot up some more annuums today.

Love the fuzz on any manzano, but wonder what gives w/my yellows this year? Red, yep, a lot, orange, yep but yellow not wanting to, the prima donnas! Great looking grow, Bonnie!

Well, I'm back for round #2.

Potted up 36 annuums today. Here is the grow area now. The weakest of the bunch was banished to the spot under the table and next to the heater/AC vent. I plan on rotating the trays occasionally.

Here's some of the chinenses and baccatums. A couple of rows are blocked by the grow light and didn't make it in the photo.

Here are some of the annuums. The tray on the right was just potted up today. The ones on the left were done about a week ago.

Okay, that's all the pepper time I have today. On to the boring stuff like housework, blah, blah, blah ...
