Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

Sorry to hear about all your issues. I would start saving rain water when it warms up. A lot cheaper than buying water. Stream water would be better too I think.

Glad to see you still have some sprouting. Gives me hopes on mine that are still not up after 14 days.

Good luck to you.

About 10:30 pm, I realized that I had been so busy working on the seed swap, that I hadn't taken any pictures today.

Better late than never ...

Added a few last minute annuum additions to some of those empty spaces in the chinense/baccatum tray this afternoon. Oh, and I sowed one more Birgit's Locoto to replace the one that died.

Not bad for day 10 with no heat mat, and no pre-soak.

Love the purple cotyledons on the Purple Bhut

Thanks for stopping by!

I'm working hard on finishing up the Pick-A-Peck of Peppers swap, so I may not be around much this week.

Lotta action in those germ trays! Fingers crossed for your new starts! True leaves forming...ahhhh. A fun time of season...

Looking really good Bonnie. I see you get some dry plug tops too. I think my mistake is I over water when I see that and it is really wetter than it looks. Although some of my other seeds popped no problems.

I am really looking forward to the Condor's Beak, thank you for sending me some. Your grow is taking off nicely.

Looks at you! When I first met you online (on garden web), habaneros were way too hot for you. Now look at all the stuff you are growing!

Well, that's it for me. There were half a dozen things I planned on growing, but just couldn't fit them all in.

All looking good Bonnie! I planted some of the Chilhuacle Negro this year too. Thanks again for doing the seed swap this year... it's always cool to see what comes back. You obviously put a lot of thought into it. Hopefully you finish with it soon so you have one less thing to juggle...

Always so much fun watching them pop, hook, and sprout! Glad you filled in the empty cells. It had to be done! ;) Looks like it will be a fine grow!

So here is everything that I've sown this year, and the germination %. If none have sprouted yet, there is just a date sown beside it. A lot of the annuums that show only 50% germination were only sown 2 weeks ago, so those percentages will increase over the next week or so.

I'm probably done sowing, but I may squeeze another annuum or two in there.

Looks at you! When I first met you online (on garden web), habaneros were way too hot for you. Now look at all the stuff you are growing!

I'm pretty sure you'll never see me eating whole superhot pods in a YouTube video or anything, but I can tolerate regular habs now, so who knows. Baby steps, I tell ya'. Each year, I get a little braver.

It's been a long and stressful week, but I'm back!

Finally got around to potting up some of the chinense and baccatums today, and as you can see, space is becoming an issue.

GrowTable3-2-13_zps752fa08a.jpg

Once I pot up the tray of annuums that's on the left, some of the trays will have to go under the table. I have a light under there, but they won't get the extra light from the window.

There was so much light coming in the window that these aren't the best pics, but here are a few of the annuum babies.

Annuumbabies3-2-13_zpsdde33723.jpg

Here's a few close ups of some chinense and baccatum babies in their new homes. They were all potted up in Ocean Forest, with some aggregate on top to hopefully prevent anymore dampening off.

This is a White Habanero. It's the fastest growing habanero that I've grown so far.

Cheiro Roxa

CheiroRoxa3-2-13_zpsc1f03d6c.jpg

... and finally, here is the Pimenta de Neyde that lost one of it's cotyledons in an unfortunate helmet head incident.

PimentadeNeyde3-2-13_zpsf55cb0b4.jpg

I finally gave up on the last few chinense and baccatums that haven't sprouted yet and tossed the plugs. Today, I resowed a few of the annuums that haven't popped yet - Alice's Favorite, Golden Cayenne, Jamaican Hot Yellow. I also sowed a couple more Birgit's Locotos, a couple Burkina Scotch Bonnets (no germination on the TFM Scotch Bonnets after 2 sowings, so trying a different seed source), and a couple of Oschenhorn's that I received from Rick. That is seriously the last peppers I'm sowing this season ... REALLY!!! :liar:

Still trying to finish up the Pick-A-Peck of Peppers swap, but I am getting close to the end.

Hey Bonnie! Just finally made it through your glog - I am at the point of waiting for hooks to pop up, so I was definitely feeling your pain of waiting for more germination. Now you've potted up and have true leaves and everything. Looks like you're off to a great start. Sounds like the switch with your water helped? I'm curious about that because as you wrote, when I've had dampening off it's been like the stem was squeezed in a ring, not just leaves withering. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Looking good! Now fingers crossed for just one Birgits!!!

I haven't given up yet! I'm determined to get at least one sprout.

I think I should have potted up sooner. I have been so busy with hosting that swap, that I let them stay in those Root Riots, and should have at least gave them a drink or two of some nutes, since there is none in those plugs. It slowed things down a bit, but I'm thinking now that they're in some good soil, they should take off pretty quick.

Looking real good Bonnie. Things still popping for you. Keep up the good growing.

Yeah, still have a few things sprouting, and I keep sneaking a few more seeds into the trays just to keep the excitement going a little longer.

You know, Pulp., I'm not certain that it was causing the problem, because I've lost one or two since I started using bottled water, but you can really see a difference on the top of the Root Riot plugs. The ones that I used tap water on have a yellowish white crust on the top from the excessive amount of minerals in our water. The plugs that only received bottled water are nice and brown on top, just like when they came out of the package.

Even with losing several sprouts, I still have more than enough sprouts. The only ones I am really disappointed in not getting germination on are the Scotch Bonnets and the Birgit's Locotos.

Nice color on your P d. N

Thanks! The color on it is definitely darker than on the Cheiro Roxa, but both are beautiful.

When I went to check on the peppers this evening, I found this:

BikerBillysprouts_zps1978de5f.jpg

Here they are in their new homes after a little surgery to separate them:

BikerBillysproutspottedup3-2-13_zps28d7c9ca.jpg

Could have sworn I just put one seed in there!

Excellent looking plants and pot ups. I think I have to do some surgery on my twin lemon drops, but they are rooted like nobodys business.

If you need some TFM Scotch Bonnet, I have some that you sent me that one seed in and it came right up. I'll send you my leftover seed if you need.

I refuse to give up on my germinations!!!

What!? Well, I used the same seed source that I sent you, so I guess it must be user error then. I haven't thrown the plugs out on those yet, but just added a couple plugs of the Burkina Scotch Bonnets to hedge my bets. I'm like you, I just keep resowing the ones that don't want to pop, even though I know the window is closing fast on having plants big enough ready by plant out time. I'm not going down without a fight!!!
