Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

Well, the plant-out has officially begun!!!

Got both Earthboxes filled this afternoon.  I put mostly jalapeno types in there.  All the hotties will go down at the community garden.

Close-ups

Zapotec Jalapeno

NuMex Pinata

Biker Billy Hybrid

NuMex Vaquero

Alma Paprika

Jaloro

Santa Fe Grande

Fresno

All of the peppers and tomatoes were outside for about 8 hours.  Everything held up to the sun and winds much better today.  I think they're ready for the big day!

Well, the hotties hit the dirt today!!!   It was really too hot, and too windy (20 - 40 mph) to plant out, but the hubby wasn't too keen on me spending Memorial Day down at the community garden, so I had to take my opportunity to spend 4 hours without the kids when I could get it.  The plants looked a bit stressed when I left, but I think they'll survive.

The angle of the sun wasn't good for picture taking by the time I finished up, but I had to take a couple anyway.

Doesn't look like much, but it's 47 peppers, and 12 tomato plants!

Here's a shot with the soaker hoses running.

"The" Fatalii (Mine, Shane's, Andy's).  It lost all of the really big leaves it had when it arrived, but it is blooming like crazy right now.

White Habanero

... and I'll throw in a couple of NONS, just because.

Chives

Rhubarb, which is ready to be harvested, if I could just find the time!

Ok, time for a shower and some ibuprofen!  Tomorrow I'll plant out the peppers that will go in the veggie bed here at the house, mostly sweets, and milds.

Alright Bonnie! :woohoo:  Glad to see you've got your chiles outside.

Have a confession to make, Rick.  I took the solar fabric down to the garden with me yesterday, and started laying it out, and realized the staples were here at the house.                I was in a time crunch, so I moved ahead without it.  May try using it for  the pumpkins and melons that I grow here at the house though.  Either that or save it for next spring.

Excellent photography of some really nice HEAT! Love the flowers and pods and SO glad you got them in dirt, Bonnie!

Thanks, Annie!  Hope your weather turns more summerlike soon!  Hard to believe you and I were planting out at almost the same time this year.

Wow...everything in the ground! That fatalii looks huge! Right now I would say its mine! If it starts doing poorly you or Andy can claim it! Happy Memorial Day Bonnie!

Haha!  That picture didn't really do it justice.  It is covered in blooms, and hopefully will have pods on it soon, though I imagine it may drop some blooms while adjusting to its new home.

Looking very nice Bonnie.  I haven't even started any of my earthboxes.

Not a problem Bonnie... I meant for you to use it however best suits you, but definitely use it!  I'm using it under my cukes and squash as well as my peppers and eggplant.

Woke up this morning, and it was around 50 degrees, clear skies, and NO WIND!!!

So I planted 16 peppers in the veggie bed here at the house, and a couple leftovers in some containers.  As soon as I finished, the winds started whipping again! :banghead:

Here is a before and after shot:

That's  2 Tangerine Pimentos, 2 Jimmy Nardellos, Patio Red Marconi, Chocolate Cherry, Ancho San Luis, Yummy, Odessa Market, Leutschauer Paprika, Paradiscom Alaku Sarga Szentes, Sandia, Golden Greek Pepperoncini, Ochsenhorn, and Alice's Favorite.

Patio Red Marconi

Yummy

Peruvian Purple

Oh, and check this out!  My first pod!!!!  The winner = Fresno

Some extra Gold Currant Tomatoes that I just stuck in a pot

Shane, you asked how much soil those Earthboxes held, and I forgot to answer you.  It took a 2 cu.ft. bag of Happy Frog to fill both Earthboxes, so approx. 1 cu.ft. per box.

Then I went to the community garden to check on things.  I made a video, so I'll post that whenever I can get it uploaded and edited.

Here's a Cheiro Roxa down at the C.G.

Came home, and the hubby made elk burgers for dinner.  Now I'm off to make smores for dessert.

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day!

The video has been uploaded to YouTube, but for some reason I was unable to import it into my Windows Movie Maker program for editing, so there is about a minute  (58 sec) on the front end, and maybe another 15 seconds at the end that I really wanted to cut off.  So just skip through the part where I thought the camera was off!  Yeah, I'm a technological idgit.

Even with the extra footage on there, it's still about half as long as the first video I made last year, so I guess that's progress ...

Nice vid Bonnie! things look like they're primed to take off for you soon. As we both know, the hard part is to keep them alive until things really warm us in June! Cheers!

Hey Bonnie...edit in Movie Maker first, I save it for HD display then upload...takes a WHILE but works! I'm gonna watch it now and post again after!

Great video...wasn't too bad! That Goat's weed will do you proud, fast grower once you add some sunshine on it and will be quick to set. I think you'll end up with more pods than you need off that one! Hope "The" Fatalii lets some of those blooms stick for you!
