Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

Of course, while I'm practically laying on the ground trying to get that Geum shot, the woman down the street comes jogging by, "Hi Bonnie!".   I guess my neighbors already know I"m a freak!

Here's how I do lunch at Bonita's Casa:

That Manzano powder isn't Lawry's, haha, I made it from the Manzano pods Shane sent me last fall.  Love that stuff!!! Had it on some popcorn yesterday.  Mmm, Mmm, that was some tasty popcorn!

Okay, enough stalling, I really have to get outside and cut the grass ...

Outa likes but I do like that!

Cut the grass that's no fun, you should see my place, glad the homestead is 100yd's off the road!

Totally have neglected everything but the garden..

Gorgeous grow and varieties? Ya got all bases covered, Bonnie. "The" Fatalii . . . lol. Got one red fatalii looked like a holly tree before lost cotys. Still does, but has pods. Love the nons: chives, rhubarb, Geum, as well. Can't wait to see everything all green and pumping out! Great shots and video! Hope weather has stabilized into little wind, no cold, just nice warmth for ya!

Thanks, Annie!  It definitely got warm today, in the mid 80's, but we still had those 20 - 30 mph winds.  The plants are looking pretty stressed at the moment, especially the ones in the veggie bed here at the house.  That bed is somewhat raised and the soil is very fast draining.  The lawn sprinklers hit some of that area, and they ran last night, but by mid-afternoon some of the plants were starting to wilt some.  I have a separate zone for that bed with bubblers, so I turned it on, but then water came pouring out near the front of the bed.  Turned them off and searched through the mud puddle to find the irrigation hose has a nick in it, probably from someone's shovel.      Looks like I'll be hand watering that bed until I can get the parts to repair the hose.

Down at the community garden things looked pretty parched, so I upped the minutes on the timer, and ran it manually just to check for hose placement, or leaks.  So far so good.  There has been a moderate amount of leaf loss due to the constant winds, but I know they will come back nice and bushy once the winds die down.  There was one plant that concerned me.  One of the White Habs has something going on with it's leaves.  May just be sun scald, but I will be keeping an eye on it.

Took all the leftover tomato and pepper plants to church this morning, and came back empty handed.

No pics today ...

Shane, I tried importing the video straight from the computer to the Window's Movie Maker, but it kept telling me that it wasn't a file type that is supported, whatever that means?  I don't remember having that problem last year when I made videos, so not sure what I did differently this time, other than I am using a different camera.

Are you on Winders 8? It seems that the *.mpg format is no longer supported. We had to go out and find something we used VLC and free download.

+1 on that! Your friends don't care, and your enemies know where they can go... ;)

Beautiful job with the garden Bonnie, we're looking forward to lots of pics of your high altitude grow and prowess in the kitchen! Cheers!

Thank you, Rick!  It's nice to have a little break now, after babysitting those plants for so long.  I'm just doing a little watering, and pulling bindweed right now.   As soon as I can find a good deal on strawberries, I'm hoping to make a batch of Strawberry Rhubarb Jam.  I found a recipe the other day for Strawberry Rhubarb Butter that looked pretty interesting too!

Bonnie, I'm sure my neighbors think i crazy out there shooting pictures of little pepper plants. But having a large garden of just peppers is enough for them to already think that.
Plants look killer! Glad you squeezed in above the frost line!

When I tell people how many pepper plants I have they give me the strangest look, like I'm speaking a foreign language or something.  Guess I am, but at least around here, we are all speaking the same language!

We got the warmth now, but that stupid wind just won't quit!!!!!!!!!   25 - 30 mph for hours and hours every day.  I am so over it!!!  Between the sun scald and the wind, the plants are looking pretty beat up right now.  I don't even want to pull out the camera, and you know how much I like to take pictures!

MMmMmM lawry's manzano... =-D... love it.. let the plant out begin!!!

Went by the community garden on the way to work this morning, and some plants are holding up to the winds better than others.  The dark leaved ones, such as Cheiro Roxa, and Pimenta de Neyde seem to have lost the most leaves.  There's a few left on the top of the plant, but the rest of the plant looks like a stick.  The soaker hoses seem to be doing a good job keeping the plants hydrated.  The zucchini and beans are starting to sprout, the onions are putting on some growth, and the tomatoes seem to have settled in and put on some new growth.  So overall things are good.

Here are some pod pics taken here at the house this afternoon.

Guess that's all for now.

Happy to see pods forming.  Hope the plants at the community garden recover.  That Manzano powder must be incredible.  Just the thing for a grilled ham and cheese.  Very nice.

Thanks Doc!  I am starting to see signs of recover on some of the plants, but others seem to be in a holding pattern.

UPDATE:

"The Fatalii" has a pod on it!  It dropped a few buds, but one bloom managed to set.  Yippee!  It did lose a few leaves, but I am seeing some healthy new growth too.

The Jamaican Hot Yellow has a couple of pods but the shape doesn't look right to me.  Too elongated, not squash like at all.  Guess I'll have to wait and see on that one.

Bishops Crown has some pods on it, and they are so cool, outer space-ish!

Temps have been in the mid 80's this week, and expected to break 90 over the weekend, so I had to increase the irrigation at the community garden to twice a day.

Managed to pick up 3 tomatillo plants - two Verde, and one Purple de Milpa.  Also, got a Winter Luxury pumpkin, and a Red Kuri winter squash, plus a 3 pack of Crimson Sweet watermelon, and Sugar Baby watermelon.  Wanted to grow some more exotic varieties, but I never got around to sowing the seeds.

Got all of that planted late this afternoon, along with some Lemon Basil, Winter Savory, and the last 5 pepper plants.  These are all duplicates - NuMex Vaquero, NuMex Pinata, Jaloro, Costeno Amarillo, and a Goat Weed.

The garden is officially "IN"!!!

Plants are looking great! Podding/blooming! Great stuff...you're way ahead of last year's grow. Gonna be a banner year at Bonnie's casa!

Reusing empty shakers becomes infinitely more fun when you don't use the sharpie to label over them...keep 'em guessing! The empty bottle of Cayenne powder got pure primo at my house...my Mother in Law thought she liked spicy food! :fireball:   :hell:

Been too long since I've been over here - glad to catch up! You're in the ground! You'll love the Bishop's crowns I think - they are a great pepper. And I'm glad my fatalii is setting pods, that is unless it doesn't grow true, then I'm so sorry Shane's fatalii is a fraud.

I just saw a news story that part of Colorado is considering leaving the state. Does that include your area? If so, will the new state have less wind? I can't believe the weather you guys have to battle there. If the new state is better that way, that would be a selling point ;)

:woohoo: Alright Bonnie! Looks like you've taken off the training wheels and can let go of the seat! As we all know... letting go is the hardest part. ;) Everything is looking great around the house, I hope the same for the ones out in the community garden. Cheers!
