Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

Everything is looking great.  Happy to see the Golden Cayenne is looking healthy and flowering up.  Mine has been very productive so I hope yours is the same.  Your NuMex varieties look awesome.  That Serrano has got to be the biggest one I have seen.  I wonder if your Bishop's Crown is crossed with something.  I kind of like the phenotype, more like a Pope's Crown.  ;)

I wish I could see the photo of your Peach Hab.  On my end, some of the photos are a blank box with a red X in the upper left corner.  Probably my computer incompletely reading the site.

Ripening looks like it is in your cards very soon.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks, Doc!  The Serrano is only about 3" long, the picture is larger than life, LOL.   Pope's Crown!!!  I like the sound of that!  I'll have to save the seeds for sure.   Even though I'm okay with a few mysteries and NONS, I still would like to grow the real deal Bishop's Crown.  You want to hear something funny?  I just looked at my germination records and next to Bishop's Crown it says DocNRock.   Hmmm...
Are you growing it this year?  If so, how do your's look?

Wow, your plants are doing great.  Not sure how your bishop is podding so much faster than mine.  I could of swore you had snow last week :P

Yeah, we don't get much spring around here.  It's straight from winter to summer.  We are back around 100 again today.  We may not have humidity, but the high altitude sun will cook you in a hurry!

Okay, I know this kind of meal isn't very manly, but I was excited about it because the lettuce, snap peas, chives, and garlic scapes came from the garden.  Plus, I used some Sandia, and Chilhuacle Amarillo powders on the chicken.  Should have used one of my hotter pepper powders, since no one complained about it being too spicy!

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

I don't know what constitutes a "manly" meal, but that looked awesome!

Funny about the BC.  I remembered on the way into the hospital today that I was the one who sent you the seeds.  I am indeed growing it also.  The pods on mine are not nearly as elongated as the ones in your pic.  I got the seeds out of a pod GA Growhead sent me last season.  The next time I do an update I'll try to remember to take a picture of the pods on mine.  Mine just started setting pods about a week ago so maybe mine will elongate, as well.

Nothing is better than sitting down to a meal and saying I grew this and this and this!

Not only is is more healthy, because it's organic, but it's FRESH!

And the taste, can't beat that.

Don't have to be manly....just gooooodddd!

Keep on keeping on!

AND the major plus here...is your kids will pickup on this too..just wait and see..when you go visit the G-Kids!

I was trying to remember what was next to those bishops crowns last season. Purple jalapenos on one side for sure. Some Hungarian wax close too. And a bunch of c. Chinense plants in the next row, mostly bhuts and ghost by them.
Do they have the typical baccatum flower? They are pretty neat looking!

GA Growhead, I don't really know the differences between flowers on a baccatum vs. annuum vs. chinense, other than some of the annuum blooms are huge.  Feel free to educate me.  At the moment there aren't any blooms on either of the Bishop's Crowns.  The ones that hadn't set yet, fell off from the 105 degree temps the past couple of days.  Today was a little better, only 96, and it should drop back down around 90 later this week, so maybe they will bud up again soon.

Doc, there is a pod on the Golden Cayenne that's over an inch long.  Not sure how I missed that the other day.  Did your pods point upward?

Scott, let's not rush things, LOL!   My oldest is only 14, and I'm not quite ready to be a grandmother yet. Besides, he's more interested in hot dogs and hamburgers, than salads right now.

Found a few earwigs camping out in the Goat Weed, and scurrying around the base of a few other plants.  There is some leaf damage that I think may be from them.  Same thing happened the past couple of years, but once the plants get full sized, they don't seem to do too much damage.  They were really bad the year I used straw mulch.  Anyway, I had to pull a couple of pods with soft brown spots towards the tip of the pod, which could be BER.  Hope not, but looks kind of like it to me ...

Baccatum flowers have green/bronze spots

Annums and Chinense are usually white. Sometimes Chinenses are cream colored and sometimes annuums have purple fringes or are purple all together. Baccatum flowers are easy to spot though the always look like above.

Thanks Shane for the picture and explanation!  I'll report back once they start blooming again.

Haven't shown any pics of the veggie bed here at the house in a while, because everything was looking pretty crappy.    I am finally seeing signs of things turning around, so here's a few photos of some of the happiest ones.

Yummy.  It's an orange sweet, kind of like those mini bells they sell at the grocery store.  There's some new growth, and it's budding up.

JWjmE8A.jpg

NuMex Vaquero (a jalapeno type).  Has one or two small pods it set right after plant out, but now it's growing again.

UyTjdpR.jpg

Odessa Market (sweet).  Still has some leaf curl, but is much improved from how it looked for the past month.

fpdnaQa.jpg

Jaloro (yellow jalapeno) also suffering from leaf curl, but putting on new growth.

ecBwpVR.jpg

This is a weird one.  The seed packet said 'Alice's Favorite', pumpkin shaped orange pepper, but I couldn't find any info on line.  The plant is only about 12" tall, and the buds on it are very fat and squatty.

QHt9eqZ.jpg

A shot of the entire bed.  Cukes on the right, basil and peppers in the front, carrots and lettuce on the left, and tomatoes and peas at the back.

... and now for some nons.    The walkway bed next to the veggies.

and we'll close with Wynnson Yellow daylily.  Looks better in the morning.  This pic was taken at dusk, after a long, hot, windy day, so the blooms are starting to fade some.

Good night all!

Bite your tongue woMon ;) We make chicken Salad at least twice a month and yours looks manly enough for me :D

Love the look of the place, flowers and all da plants \o/

Have a great one!

Nice update Bonnie, everything's looking great. Yep, have to agree with whats been said, there's just something about sitting down to a meal and knowing that it's something that you grew and prepared. Nothing better!

Thank you, guys!!!

So I harvested my first Biker Billy Hyb. tonight.  Had planned on slicing it up in the black-eyed peas I was cooking, but when I tasted it, I decided it was too hot for the kids.  Ended up sauteing in a pan and putting it on top of my serving.

As you can see in this first pic, it is way bigger than the average jalapeno.

Now if I could just harvest a RIPE pepper!!!

Supper looked wonderful Bonnie! I'm with ya on the anticipation of waiting for something... anything to ripen up! If your grow follows the same pattern mine did, the Baccatums will probably be the first to ripen. I hope it's soon!

Really nice variety, Bonnie, and the plants are looking great.  Huge Billy Biker Jal!  Looks great on top of that delicious-looking dish.

Regarding the Golden Cayenne, yes, mine mostly grow upward, as well.  My original seed was from SocalChilehead (Fernando).  The seeds I sent you were fresh from one of my ripe pods.

Hope you and your family have a great 4th!

WARNING:  NON pepper post.

Most of the towns around us cancelled fireworks due to the high fire danger, but the next town over from us still had there's on July 3rd, which we went to see.  They also had an orchestra playing.  There was a thunderstorm that rolled through, but we waited it out and I was glad we did.  Very enjoyable evening!  Funny thing is none of the weather websites show that my town actually got any precipitation, but my garbage bins were blown over, and the recyclables were strewn all over the yard.  Oh well ...  there is a 40% chance of thunderstorms again today, so hoping we get some measurable rainfall this time.

Hearing the orchestra the other night brought back a lot of memories for me.  I had to remind myself that I live in a small town now, and that means a much smaller orchestra.  Growing up in Memphis, I remember spending July 4th sitting along the Mississippi River, listening to a huge orchestra, and watching an impressive fireworks display.  One of the best memories of all was during Memphis in May, listening to James Hyter singing Old Man River.  I just wanted to share his final performance with you guys.  Hope you'll take the time to watch it.

No pepper pics yet today, but here is Ludmilla's Pink Heart tomato

... and Indian Stripe tomato (similar to Cherokee Purple)

Will finish with a mystery daylily.  Came up next to Merle Kent, but the color is different.  Not sure what it is, but I think it's pretty!

Hope everyone is enjoying a long weekend!
