Highalt's 2013 Grow - End of Season Wrap Up

I know some of you guys have already started seeds for next year's grow, and I should have started the Manzano's a month ago, but I am still working on finalizing the grow list.

Each year since I started growing peppers, the list has gotten bigger, and they have taken up a larger % of my vegetable growing space. I started working part-time 3 months ago, and I am a mother of three, so I am struggling with being realistic about how much time I can devote to pepper growing this coming season. Right now, I've got between 65 and 70 varieties on the list, and some of them I'd really like to have more than one plant. Last year, I ended up with about 50 varieties and a total of 75 plants. So you can see that I have some work to do before I start putting the seeds in the dirt!

I thought I would go ahead and put up my tentative list, and use the feedback I get from you guys to help me narrow things down a bit. Those of you that know me will notice that I still haven't gotten brave enough to add any supers yet ... maybe next year. :snooty:

So here's what I got so far:

Annums
Alice's Favorite
Alma Paprika
Ancho Gigantia, and/or Ancho San Luis
Barker (NuMex)
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Black Hungarian
Cayenne Thick (Can't remember who it was that was raving about this one this past season, but I don't have seeds for this one yet.)
Chilhuacle Amarillo
Chocolate Cherry
Cochiti
Cosa Arrugada and/or Pepperoncini
Costeno Amarillo
Fish
Fresno
Georgia Flame
Goat's Weed
Golden Cayenne
Hungarian Hot Wax
Jaloro
Jamaican Hot Yellow (Anyone have a source for these? It's confusing to me that the Jamaican Hot Choc. is a Chinense, but this one is listed as an Anuum!)
Jimmy Nardello
Leutschauer Paprika
Lumbre
Mulato Isleno
NuMex Pinata
NuMex Vaquero
Patio Red Marconi
Pusztagold
Sandia
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano (Not sure which one. May try the purple one this year.)
Tangerine Pimento and/or Yummy
Tobasco (Need seeds for this one.)
Zapotec Jalapeno

Baccatums
Aji Chinchi Amarillo
Aji Yellow
Birgit's Locoto
Bishop's Crown (Don't actually have seeds for this one yet. If anyone has some, I'd be willing to trade for them.)
El Oro de Equador
Inca Red Drop
Lemon Drop (Maybe. Last time they were bitter. May try a difference source.)
Pimenta Barro do Robiero
Purple de Arbol and/or Negro de Arbol (Which one is better?)

Chinenses
Aji Dulce (type 1 or 2 ?) Is this the same as Rocotillo?
Aji Limo Rojo
Bonda ma Jacques (Don't have seeds for this one yet either. May just grow Gold Bullet or regular yellow habanero as a substitute?)
Cheiro Roxa
Habanero, Peach (and maybe the Pink as well)
Habanero, White (I have the regular white, and White Bullet. Is the Peruvian White better, or are they all about the same?)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Purple Bhut (Okay, I don't have seeds for this one either. Maybe I'll substitute Condor's Beak if I can't find any.)
Scotch Bonnet Yellow (Have some labeled True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. Should those be yellow? Or red?)

Pubescens (Yeah, I know I'm really too late on these, and probably won't get any ripe fruit this coming season)
Orange Manzano
Red Manzano
Yellow Manzano

Well, I think that's about it. I'm sure the list will change a few more times before it's a done deal, but at least it's a start!

So tell me what you think about the ones I have questions on, or let me know where to find seeds for the ones I'm missing, or tell me what I should have on the list and don't. Just kidding on that last one!!!

Other than moving around a few perennials in the flower beds, I didn't get much gardening done today.

I did get brave enough to put out three tomato plants in wall-o-waters.  Was planning on planting six, but could not find my other package of WOWs.

To the right of the tomatoes are the peas, which are just coming up.  All the empty space in front of the tomatoes will hopefully be full of peppers soon!

Hi Bonnie
Nice to see the pics of your spring green! I hear ya 'bout getting antsy to get things in the ground... I finally scratched that itch yesterday. We've been getting overnight temps in the low to mid 40's up to now, but they're supposed to be in the 50's the rest of the week, and Memorial day is a week from tomorrow. Hope the wind eases up for you by then so you can get your babies outside for the season!

They are perfect for tomato plants, and allow them to be planted out at least a couple of weeks early.  They aren't as practical for the peppers though, because I plant them too close together to allow enough room for the WOW.  Since the tomatoes are planted further apart, the spacing works out great.

Just wish I could find that other package of them!

Those colors on flowers are breathtakingly beautiful, Bonnie. I too admire you guys with snow less than month ago, planting out now! But spring eventually sprung. Like those WOWs too! Can't wait to see the peppers load up in front of maters

I enjoyed your pictures of "others" especially the currants. I've planted 4 of those this year and never tried any, so it's neat to see what they look like for you. Looking great Bonnie!

Bonnie, wonderful pictures of your beautiful high desert garden!
The pepper plants look like they are rarin' to get out and grow some!

Thank you, everyone, for the nice comments!

I was planning to put the peppers in the ground this weekend, at least the ones here at the house anyway, but the winds are in the 30 - 40 mph range again today, and I just checked the forecast through TUESDAY:

DRY AND UNSEASONABLY WARM CONDITIONS WILL PREVAIL THROUGH TUESDAY
WITH GUSTY AFTERNOON WINDS AT MOST LOCATIONS EACH AFTERNOON.

I've got the grow lights as high as they will go, and the plants will barely fit under them.  I really, really, really, want to shut down the grow room for the season, but I think putting them outside right now would be a suicide mission.

I was at the younger kids' school all afternoon today for field day, and after being in the sun and wind for several hours, I feel wilted!!!   The combination of high altitude sun, strong winds, and 6% humidity sucks all the moisture (energy, life) out of you.

I feel the same way!

Dang dry wind will leave you feeling like a piece of dust in no time....
I'm barely getting anything done out there because of it.

Yikes! I remember living in conditions like that on the front range. I wasn't  really into gardening then but I remember that when we were downrange on manoevers they told us to drink a liter of water every hour to avoid the risk of heat exhaustion.

Well, I may not be able to plant out yet, but the winds probably won't kick up until afternoon, so I am hoping for a couple hour field trip for the plants this morning.

Great update. Tool me days to get to hear. Couple months of updates takes forever. Patience on the plant out as I'm seeing people with threads regretting an early plant out. Good work on all the NONs.

You'll know when it's right, go with your gut. I'm hoping it's soon though, I know you're ready...really ready!

have a great weekend!

The winds are not quite as bad today, in the 15 - 30 mph range, instead of 25 - 40 mph.  Hey, I'll take it!

Spent 3 1/2 hours down at the community garden, getting it ready for planting day.

Before (The plot has been tilled, and the t-posts for the pepper rows are still up from last year):

After all the t-posts were in for the tomatoes, and the soaker hoses were laid out and tested:

Got about 3/4 of a row of onions in on the far right (north) side.  Last year, one bundle of onion starts was more than enough to do the whole row.  Think they cheated me this time!

I also planted three holes (rather than hills) of zucchini.

Came back to the house and took a few pepper pics.

Cheiro Roxa

Ancho Gigantia

Bishop's Crown

... and here are a few NONS:

The first California poppy bloom of the season

Yellow Wallflower

Delosperma congestum

Delosperma kelaidis 'Mesa Verde'

The winds are starting to pick up now, but I may try to at least plant the peppers going in the Earthboxes, since those will go on the patio, which is protected from the winds by the backyard fence.

Hope everyone is having an awesome Memorial Day Weekend!
