Hornet BOMB! Get down!

Yeah, I'm done.

Redtail....are you the Aggy....no. So why don't you back off. It isn't your place to point fingers or hassle Pex about what or how he does things. It's his chance to take and his decision to do whatever he wants to do in his life. I am plenty sure he isn't taking away any of your business. Everyone has to start somewhere. While you are acting all holier than thou, why don't you go and check your house for all of the shit you have that's from China and then you can get rid of it all and go out and buy everything American made. Let those who judge be judged.

I understand you went through a process and that it sucks. That doesn't give you the right to come bullying someone around because you feel entitled to. You are entitled to your opinion Redtail but you might want to check your hostility at the door. To be honest, I can't believe that you are coming down on the little guy. This country wasn't founded on bowing down and doing as you are told. It's about fighting back and taking a stand. If you want to be obey the "rules" even if you think they are BS....then by all means go ahead. Don't, however, go around telling others what they can or cannot do.

If you don't like the red tape, then maybe you should start a revolution. Leaders aren't made by government pets......good luck Pex. I love the sauces.

3/5 I'm a little surprised at you buddy. Holier than thou art? China? Really???

I AM the little guy too and there is a right way to start small. . . . . LEGALLY!!! If Pex wants to keep his sauces as "a hobby sauce" then that is perfectly fine with me. He could easily build up a good reputation for himself and his products while giving out free samples and not selling them. But the way the rules of the game state in Pennsylvania (and the rest of the country) is to SELL PRODUCTS TO THE PUBLIC one must be certified by a public food safety agency. This is absolutely NOT bullying and no one should think it is. Personally, I could care less what Pex does with his products, I'm more concerned with the safety of those buying it.

Yes, I did go through the process and it is truly a pain in the ass! I have to drive over 40 miles to get my products legally processed and pay to rent the facility in order to do it. Would I prefer doing this in my home kitchen where I could minimize my costs? You betcha I would but the simple fact that I have a dog in my residence prevents me from legally being permitted to do this.

Like I said before, the rules suck and they are a real pain in the ass BUT they are there for a reason!

So if he didn't make money off of his sauce and he gave it away for free, you wouldn't care....and this somehow makes his sauces safer...lol. Here's the thing, I'm not a rules and regulations kind of guy. I'll take care of myself thank you. You can hide behind your "I'm concerned for the publics safety" but I don't believe it. Your previous comments make that statement transparent. Well maybe the government should regulate the way I store the food in my house, or inspect my kitchen in case I have people over to eat....you know, for the publics safety.

Ok, this has gone well beyond someone illegally selling sauces. To respond to your statement, if Pex wants to give it away for people to try, that is up to him. I would still have the same concerns for safety for someone that received it as a gift or paid money for it. Dave, don't put words in my mouth when you don't completely understand the issue...

I'm not a big government guy, just a gun-toting redneck from the mountains of Pennsylvania. If you want to turn this into a political thread, I have no interest in arguing that with you. So in that case, do whatever the heck you want and keep buying illegally made products from this guy. If you don't mind putting yourself or others at risk, then keep up the support for him. Personally, I have a hell of a lot more important things to worry about than this...

Guys, I'm not sure how productive this discussion is.

@Pex - for what it's worth, and as someone who likes you on here, RedTail does have a good point. As someone in the process of starting up a business, I read RedTail's comments and can't help but agree - I'm paying a co-packer (which ends up being cheaper than me doing it at home for the economies of scale) and registering the business and buying bar-codes and paying for a million & 6 things along the way to do it legit, it is a little hard to accept someone who isn't playing by the same rules and incurring the same fees that we're paying for the right to sell to the public.

That said, I'm not the sauce police and it's not really my place to tell you what to do or what risks to incur. As someone who likes you (and loves your bee logo) those risks are substantial though - it doesn't matter if your sauce is safe or not - you can get into some very real trouble selling it out of your kitchen. Both with the state and the county, and possibly the feds. Plus all it takes is one *claim* that someone got sick from your sauce, and they can sue the hell out of you.

I'd suggest considering a barter-style arrangement while you get your test market feedback - trade sauce for other goods. There will be plenty of folks willing to do that - I've done it on here to great success. I can't say I've never sold a bottle of my sauce as some folks insisted on paying me for it - but when I first started to get the business going & filed my DBA to start to "go legit" I didn't sell another bottle. I've given away probably close to 500 bottles of sauce in the last year though - I consider it the costs of doing business. The feedback comes at a price too.

@RedTail & Pex & 3/5 - I honestly think this topic has gone a bit far. It's at the point that it's almost a fight - this board's better when it's harmonious. People can disagree without making a federal case out of it, and I think this horse is plenty dead right now. This certainly isn't a sauce review any more to say the least.

I agree, i would like to end this thread. and i am strongggggggly looking into making this sauce a legit business. ESPECIALLY going through a copacker

3/5, I'm a little surprised at your comments.

This started as comments about Pex's sauce, so I will not post some lengthy comments here. I'll post in another forum as to keep this about the sauce, and hopefully take the side discussion elsewhere.

I'll be back to edit with a link when posted.

edit- never mind the link, those who are interested will find it. Assuming how hornetBOMB is made, I've posted to Pex about getting a bottle.

FuseBox,
If I may respectfully post to you, do you know that you can get e-coli (yes, that poop-disease) from fresh vegetables...like fresh jalapenos..used in a hot sauce I just cooked up...well it didn't really cook it, I jus nuked it in the mircro and the stuck it in the blender with some fresh onions and garlic...MAN, this schtiff tastes GUUD! You should buy some frum me for $8.

I believe ( and RedTail, please correct me if I am wrong in my understanding), RedTail's concern is that products are being put out into the market place that are not properly licensed and those products are being presented as licensed products. I could totally be wrong on that and if so, RT , please post the correct idea.

Personally, I have no problem with people selling their home-made sauces to friends and family. Friends and family generally know the person selling the sauce isn't licensed and they assume all health risks associated with that purchase.

It is NOT OK, in my humble opinion, to sell or represent a home made/UNLICENSED sauce to customers via a website, or through online forums. If the sauce maker doesn't understand the risks involved in what they do, they should not be doing it! Food safety is more than just a "rumbly tummy"... and it should be taken very seriously by anyone who thinks to sell something for profit.

Ok, I am one to vote to end this topic. I have no more need for all this drama in my life and it is starting to get a little ridiculous in my opinion. I did not post in this thread to comment on big government, over regulation and other bullsh*t political issues. I find it amusing that some people are using this topic as an opportunity to pat themselves on the back for being true patriots. Ok guys, good job for buying American.....big government bad.....we all get it.

All this comes down to this. . . I had a problem with what Pex was doing (charging sales tax on a non-taxable item, processing out of his home, reselling products without permission, etc.). I took it upon myself to call him out publicly and that was wrong of me. If I really wanted to fix the issue, I should have done in privately. In that, I admit I was wrong.

@FuseBox - Name calling and trying to talk poorly about my products really isn't doing yourself justice. You are just embarrassing yourself. . . In response to your comments, I did kind of take it upon myself but not until I was verbally assaulted in the chatroom and found out through other people. I confronted Pex about it, he apologized and yes, it did stop.

Like I said, I'm done with this topic and would like to move on with life. Pex, good luck with furthering your products. Believe it or not, I encourage you to do so! I encourage you to do it in the LEGAL manner.

This is a forum where people come together who share a common bond. This is NOT a place to preach to the choir about legality issues.

Actually, no. This is a forum for people who share a love of hot peppers in general, but it is also host to hot sauce makers, hot pepper growers, hot pepper consumers, hot sauce sales people and hot sauce reviewers. There are forums quite specific to the food business, and more to the point, legality issues.

I don't see RedTail as out of line in his reasoning whatsoever - his delivery was somewhat harsh, but I get that too. Food safety and legality and doing business the right way are all absolutely topics discussed on THP all the time. Being new here with 65 posts I can see how you may have missed that. There are hundreds of topics and thousands of posts by folks trying to do business the legal, safe and correct way.

Check the forums before trying to play spokesperson for what THP is or isn't about. You don't represent this community friend - you represent only yourself with your opinion. And you're dead wrong.

I try not to roll in the muck, but your post calling out RedTail and threatening to start a campaign against his products while simultaneously bashing them and insulting him is way out of line. I'd be surprised if there weren't rules against that here, so you might want to take care and think before you speak.

Hey everyone, this thread has actually brought up some interesting points and good discussion - even if a bit heated/dramatized. Unfortunately, it is very tangentially related to the REVIEW of Pex's product, so I'm staying out of it.

If somebody wants to open a thread about the pro's and con's of state and federal watchdogs in the hot foods industry, I may even join in the discussion. I think the proper forum would be the "Food Business" forum or maybe "Hot Talk" or "Food and Beverage".

Edit after the fact: just as cory said below... Heres a link to the thread http://thehotpepper.com/topic/30122-legal-sauce-vs-hobby-sauce/
