I am an idiot

Mel and a few more of you will remember that I bought an HD (1080p) TV about 6 months ago. I was very impressed with the picture I was receiving through my Dish Network (satellite) until.....

I saw Retta's HDTV with her cable service.

Wow. It was amazing. The picture looked spooky clear and even older programs (like old B&W Twilight Zone episodes looked almost too good to believe. My picture wasn't nearly that clear!

I just assumed that it was the diference between my satellite signal...and her cable.....

nope!

It was actually the antiquated satellite box I was still using (over 13 years old) to send the signal to the new television! You have to have an HD box in order to receive the HD-quality signal. Once I ordered the new box (and DISH, BTW...) and called the company to activate the new equipment.....the difference is nothing less than incredible.

:woohoo:

SO....for SIX MONTHS......Captain Dumbass here has been looking at his new TV with fogged-up beer goggles.

I am such an idiot.

Didn't you notice that the picture was kinda streched out to each side, making everyone look like a little person? I am sure your old box was sending a 4:3 picture signal to your 16:9 wide screen.......

I recently upgraded myself, had the cable company bring out a HDTV DVR box with the HDMI cable connection two days after installing it all. So glad I did, it really made a 1000% difference!

This is an excellent point.

I actually had to adjust the resolution on my TV (ie. blow up the image) to accomodate the widescreen format on my new TV. Therefore, I lost a good bit of the image at the top and bottom whenever I watched a regular program.

DVD's and downloaded movies came in at HD quality cause they were already in HD (or near HD) format and being pumped into the TV via an HDMI cable through the BOSE or the laptop.

You'd think that would have been the smoking gun........

Drankin'!!!

haven't had cable/sat TV for years but have been watching EVERYTHING via internet.

Bought a laptop 3 years ago, not HD, so didn't worry about upgrading the old tv for picture quality.

Bought a new HD laptop and a large monitor (not flat-screen tv), still watching TV off the internet, no monthly fees...

just waiting for cash$$ to buy the flatscreen to feed from the laptop- (no cable/satellite) There TV options out there other than Disch.

Next, Pauly, work on getting your 'puter linked up to the new TV so when you view all those GORGEOUS food posts on THP, it makes you just want to lick the screen!!!

You would not have even picked up HD channels without a newer box in the first place. If your HDTV has a tuner you can pickup OTA HD channels for free.

I used to install for DirecTv. I know what you mean. Another funny thing is that people will buy the big-ass Mitsubishi 61" tv, and wonder why the picture looks like crap. You are sharing the same amount of data over WAY more pixels. Its gonna stretch it and make the individual pixels fuzzy. Spend the same amount of money on a smaller tv, and you will be happier. TRUST ME!!!

Obviously, sweetie, you've never seen my 32" computer monitor. ;)

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I have a 55" Hitachi and I'm very happy with the picture I'm getting...........NOW!!!

For years I operated on nothing but bunny ears and an old 25" GE TV. We decided it was time to by a new TV and purchased a 48" JVC HD TV, so of course we had to get a satellite receiver. Our receiver wasn't HD as HD still had not been released. That was 2002 and last year I finally had to call the satellite company to come in a check my system as I was losing a lot of channels and even the most basic local channels were barely working, they came in and replaced the LNB but it had no effect. The tech said it was most likely the 7 year old receiver and to replace it, so I went out and purchased the HD version of the receiver and all my lost channels instantly reappeared - for about 2 years I put up with channels flipping in and out; overall this really didn't bother me as it was Canadian TV and I was running my FTA Dishnet system, which had more value(free movies and nudies and I didn't care if it was HD or not).

Next step was to start watching in HD and that I did, since I was paying for it anyway for the last few years. I love watching Natural Geographic HD channel and every week I take the girls to our local library and we take out DVD's, the girls watch kid shows and I take out BBC documentaries, tonight I watched Shallow Seas and got to witness marine action off the coast of Australia in the Great Barrier Reef and Indonesia's reef system - under water action in HD is absolutely breath taking and stunning. Now the HD TV is 8 years old and we are thinking of replacing it with the latest greatest 3D LED, 60", 240Hz, with all the connections, that way we can connect a computer and surf the Net plus watch TV. I loaded the application on one of my computers to watch Internet TV and that sucked, not the type of stuff I would watch.

....................... the 20 year old GE, 25" is still working fine and the kids use it for their Wii and when the JVC colour modules went on the blink I had to bring up the GE so we could watch TV(that has happened twice). Now the HD, DVI connection acts up and I have to disconnect it for a few days and it corrects itself. Last year I thought I was going to be able to watch the Superbowl in HD but no, the connection acted up and I was out of luck.

BurnignColon sounds like he's familiar with "working with gear".

Most of the networks are now broadcasting via their own sites or other 3-party sites like FanCast, Hulu or CastTv. I guess a person has to make a call as to how important watching that Superbowl game on their own TV in their own living room is.

Used to be really important for us, not so much any more. If our local team is in the SB, we'll head to the local pub to catch the action. The rest of the time, we watch TV via internet.

And Pauly, I'd LOVE to see your 32" rack!
