I can't taste anything today

Due to my hot sauce adventure from the past few days, I cannot taste anything today. I used a blend of the following:
  • Butch T
  • 7 pod Jonah
  • Bhut Jolokia
  • 7 pod yellow
  • caribbean red hab
  • chocolate hab
  • orange hab
  • fatalii
  • Bhut indian carbon
  • 7 pod red
  • brain strain red
  • giant white hab
I added pinapple, garlic, onions, vinegar, honey, salt and lime juice to the mix. Cooked until bubbling, added to food processor to liquify. Once it was at desired consistency put back into pan and cooked ~ 15 minutes. Bottled in sterilized 5 oz woozy's. Had some leftover "mash" (it wouldn't pour into the woozy's)- added powdered ginger and lime juice concentrate to make a type of relish. Due to my add, taste, add, taste method I no longer have the ability to taste anything. I had some last night on my dinner. It burned my tongue :mouthonfire: , back of the throat :mouthonfire: , gums :mouthonfire: and lips :mouthonfire: - I cannot comment on the taste right now. I'll give it a few days to allow the flavors to develop - and for me to regain the ability to taste - and post the results.

Oh yeah - tried the Oxo food mill. I started with the finest plate. It clogged with the pineapple. went to the medium plate - same results. I finally gave up and used the food processor.

Your not being able to taste anything is likely not related to peppers. If it is because of the sauce, perhaps you should consider whether the other ingredients are the issue. Regardless, if it doesn't clear up in a day or two, I'd recommend that you see a doctor, as it could be a sign of a health issue.

Hey Cerberus,

Not sure about Oxo mill, But I'd recommend starting with the coarse disc. then finish with the fine disc, that's if you want a smooth sauce. Food mills shouldn't clog or bind if used correctly. Does yours have any plastic parts or is it all stainless steel?
Don't worry about your taste senses coming back.... :)
Feel fortunate for yourself, if its caused by the peppers.
One of my co-workers was a tower climber. Some of our work involves mounting communication equip. with antenna arrays on buildings and towers. He had a short fall about 25ft off a penthouse to the deck level. Injured his head, he ended up getting a metal plate......yikes. But the humorous side of this story is he had lost his taste buds or senses....completely. We'd go out for lunch sometimes Thai or Mexican and he'd LOAD up on the hot sauce or thai chili paste. He couldn't taste the food or feel the heat in his mouth, but it help warm up his body......ha.
And it does get pretty cold up top in the Chicago winters.
Oh, and he'd never have a shot of the good Bourbon......it wouldn't matter.

Greg,
Thanks for the response. I kind of figured I went the wrong direction with the food mill. All contact surfaces, including disks are stainless steel.

I appreciate the taste sensation information. I worked with a guy that had been in a fight and hit his head on the concrete. A piece of skull broke off and went into his brain. Due to this, he lost his sense of smell and most of his taste. He could inhale ammonia fumes right out of the bottle. He said he could feel a slight burn, but nothing else. I felt sorry for him, he ate food just for the nutrition.

Ate some granola a few minutes ago and could detect the flavors. Whew! Glad it's not permanent.

Hey good for you.... :)
I'm an occasional culprit to biting into a HOT cheezy pizza before it cools........I should know better!
Although thats a completely different type of burn...... ...... it still takes a day or two to heal...

I have a friend who was in an atv accident years ago in high school. He had a serious head injury. He can barely taste anything, but likes hot stuff because he can kind of taste that. I think you will be fine as long as you post pics of this sauce.

Hum, can't taste a darn thing? Might be a good time to take the wife to that restaurant she's been wanting to go to that your all like, Uhhhh, there's no way I'm putting that stuff in my mouth, about. You could make her very happy all the while not tasting a darn thing and then just say, it was ok, I'm just not really into it. Then, unless you've already told her you cant taste, your in like Flynn.

Well, my taste buds have recovered.
The hot sauce tastes friggin awesome. The extreme heat I experienced was due to an experiment with one jar of leftover mash. I think I used a flavor enhancer that caused the capsaicin to become more readily absorbed.

Flavor enhancer = tequila. Thought I'd make a lime/tequila hot sauce. I surmise the alcohol in the tequila has distilled the capsaicin from the mash and made it more "mobile".
Hits you like an extract, tastes like a hot sauce.

Good to hear you're back in action. :onfire:

Was the sauce base mostly tequila?

No,
It had maybe 5% tequila at most. I have a bottle of Patron leftover from my wedding last year. Not much of a tequila drinker so I thought it would be good as a flavor enhancer. The alcohol really intensifies the burn.
