From Wikipedia "The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 52 independent and sovereign states. Most are former British colonies or dependencies of these colonies".
In Australia, Boxing Day means beer and cricket.

It kind of originated for the "help" to have a day off. The next weekday after Christmas is when the servants would be sent home with a box of gifts, goodies, a bonus etc, to be with their families.

Sometimes trades people would take boxes around, filling them with donations for the needy.

The Commonwealth of nations, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, India, etc all consider Boxing Day a national holiday and the banks are closed.

Party on!

In Canada it has turned into the shopping equivalent of Black Friday, since they changed the law letting stores open on boxing day about 25 yrs ago. Biggest sales day of the year for retail stores.

I always thought it had to do with returning gifts day after, and all you see is pissed off people on the streets with boxes lol.

Cuz here on the news you always see how big of a retun day it is.

Many folks who offer input  on  THP  (Commonwealth  of Pepper  ) are/were part of the Commonwealth of Nations..it is  a melting pot here...which I love.
I still refer to today as "Boxing Day" in the ole USA  & I recall as a kid how much fun it was,it was one of the biggest Holiday, visiting friends, lots of partying, just a joyful day.

Very few stores allow returns on boxing day here, they are too busy. Tomorrow will be crazy return day
