JCW's 2015 Glog

Well, here's to another year. I wanted to downsize from last year, and ended up practically doubling everything.  Started germinating on Jan 22 using paper towel method.  Tried 2 ways, one in cups with the seeds on top, other the way I have always done with the seeds in paper towel in ziploc.  Both have worked, but the paper towel in ziploc seems faster, maybe better temp control there.  So far have about 55 seeds in dirt after 11 days with many of them already popped up and looking happy.
 

 
Almost an embarrassing setup compared to many I see on here, but it worked great 10 years ago, and still worked fine last year so I figure no need to change yet.

Will need another rack of lights this year for the increase in volume I have.

After digging up some of my plants to overwinter, I realized I'm going to have to do some serious amending and/or use your porthole technique. The clay ridden soil in Southern IL is bad too. A lot of my plants weren't able to spread their roots very well. The ones that did were my best producers (no surprise). I tilled everything and even forked over the whole plot last season and it still wasn't enough. I'm contemplating doing raised beds instead next year.
I would have to get a truck load of gypsum, sand, and compost to do it right.

Yeah, I would love some nice raised beds, but wife would make me go so far overboard with fence, arbor, all kinds of stuff that would make it cost way too much.  I would love to have some beds about 2 - 3 feet tall though to reduce the back pain.   But the holes in the ground are cheap, and good exercise.  Just start digging and filling them with mix soon as ground thaws.  I actually tested one row where I just loosend a trench of soil and mixed in a little peat and manure and the grew pretty well also.  My do some of that technique also next year.

I don't have back pain typically, but usually around the 4 hours into the pick mark it starts to get a little sore.

Too late I already did last year I think.  I would actually like her ideas if I had the $$$ to pay someone to put it in.  The time it would take and money and all the hauling of dirt is what is prohibitive.  Add to that the fact every year she has us looking at other houses with the itch to move, last think I want to do is put in some serious time and $$$ on something like that then move, particularly when theres other things in my house that need the attention more seriously than the garden.
