Jeff H's 2014 glog- Season ending harvest pics.

Okay, time to kick this growing year off. First a pic from last year of the hydroponic scorpion right before I added it to the compost pile. The plant was so productive with 4 gallon freezer bags stuffed plus more already dried that not only did I decide to not overwinter it, but TSBTs won't be on the grow list next year. This was truly a beast and by far my most productive plant. IIRC, it was over 5' tall and just about as wide when hte branches were heavy with pods.

It was started about this time last year, so it is about time to start some of those pesky slower growing plants if I want them this big next year.

All good things come to an end. The plants will be chopped up and mixed with the leaves for compost.

Okay, with that out of the way, let's get started on next year.

First, a shot of some of the over winter plants in the upstairs window sill. I just plan on keeping them alive here with no real growth expected until I put them outside next year. The two small plants are scorpion clones from the monster. I still don't think they will make the grow next year, but I just couldn't kill it without taking a couple clones. Other overwinters in this pic include a ghost pepper, hot paper lantern hab, tabasco pepper, my largest and most productive giant jalapeno and a couple of others.

Now down into the grow room for an overall shot of what I am doing this year. The flood table is new, but everything else is the same from last year. Same 600W MH light and same mylar on the walls.

Now at this point, let me take a minute to explain that there is no organic soil in anything I brought inside, nor anything that I plan to plant this year. Everything will be hydroponic in one way or another. Even the plants upstairs. My soil for all plants not in the flood table is 50/50 perlite and peat moss. I water them with hydro nutes every few days, but probably can get away with once a week or so. Soil drains really well but the peat moss holds a decent amount of moisture. I'm hoping that we have no issues with root rot this year. I'm also betting that fungus gnats won't like this fast drying soil either. Well that and the mosquito dunks that will be in the hydro water if those bastards do show up again this year.

A close up of the "soil". Look at all that great perlite.

Now, looking at the plants in the flood table, the perlite/pete moss is about 80/20 and I flood hte table once a day. As it is, there is probably too much pete in the soil because the grow bags stay soaked all the time and I'm going to have mold issues. I need to rethink this, but this is what I have for now.

Here they are the day it was installed on Oct 21st.

Here they are a week later (last night). You can't really see it, but there are a couple of tiny growth nodes on the ghost pepper (big pot on the left) and the paper lantern in the black pot. No sign of growth on the monzano yet, but if you look close at the pot, you can see what looks like mold starting. I tossed a cup of H2O2 into the rez last night to kill it if it was mold. We'll see. Maybe plastic air pruning pots would be better suited, or giant net cups.

That is all for now. Join me back on the next update. I'm working hot and heavy on some clones and other projects that aren't quite ready to be photographed yet. Soon though.

Looking good Jeff. Makes me want to find/make some more hot sauce!

Go for it. We're rooting for you.

Allright, Jeff - new seedlings!  Looking good brother.
Same for the tabasco and cabbage prep!
Thanks Paul. I hope they turn out.

So do you use the same process to get sauerkraut going? I've never made any but my heritage dictates I need to ;)

I did the same process for kimchi earlier in this glog and it is just fermented napa cabbage. I did use a brine started from some sauerkraut that we had on hand for the kimchi and didn't with the new sauerkraut but it should be fine.

I have lots of German in my genes but I haven't cooked much German lately because they generally aren't spicy.

Just noticed this. HOOOOOOOOOOOT. baby winter monzanos and two of them. bunches of flowers on this plant so I'm sure I'll have more since they are clearly pollinating.

All the babies. The only ones that haven't popped at all are the Bishops crowns. There is a little bit of everything in here. monzano, ghost, white ghost, MOA, baijo, mirasol, poblano, julamondo, giant jalapeno, rocoto, et.al. Once these get big enough to transplant, I'll start the rest of the annuums.

Very nice job on the Manzanos Jeff... Woot! :woohoo:  Continued success brother!

Thanks Rick .Keeping my fingers crossed. Last year was pretty crappy for them.

My pH meter died. Actually I think the batteries just died but 3 new button batteries cost more than the meter did. got this new one from Amazon.

Found this little guy just hanging out on my Jigsaw getting some warmth from the light. Don't really know what it is, but he seems harmless. I have no idea how he got all the way down in the basement.

Another shot of the Jigsaw without the bug and naga morarch in the background.

Sprouts and plants are looking good Jeff. As for the bug, that's a type of beetle(boxelder), and whatever you do, take him outdoors if you are going to kill him, they stink when you crush them! They don't really harm anything, we have them here.

Nice looking plants and I think I need to pick your brain on that meter a bit.

Anytime Jeff. It seems to work pretty good so far, but it does seem to take longer to stabilize than my old one did.

Thanks Penny. Good to know the bug won't do any harm. I'll just leave him be. I think he likes it in the warm room.

Congrats Jeff the plants are looking great! And you got some pods en route! Gonna have some tasty manzanos...

Thanks man. If those monzanos are as slow as the ones I had late last year, it is going to be May before they are ripe.

+1 on boxelder. Harmless.

Appreciate the confirmation.

A couple of thoughts.

Of the new sprouts, all have popped except the Bishops crowns. If they don't pop, I'll replant with the rest of the annuums in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, I took the humidity dome off, took them off of the heat mat and put them in the general population under the MH light. I lost a bunch of plants to damping off a few years ago and that humidity dome scares me once the plants sprout.

Another observation: the monzano in the flood table is going like gangbusters as you see in the pics. The one in the 3 gallon root pouch is not. They get essentially the same nutrients but the root pouch one is at the far corner of the grow room getting the dimmest light. No flowers, no aggressive new growth, nada. It doesn't look unhealthy, as a matter of fact, it looks just as healthy as most of my o/w plants, but the ones directly under the light are prospering. The lumens really drop off as you move away from the center.

Note to self, when I pot everything up and I have to move the o/w out of the grow room to make room for the new plants, make sure to rotate the plants around the room from time to time to give them even light exposure. Maybe when I pull them out to water them every few days.

A few pictures that I have been meaning to take but never got around to it.

This is the sauerkraut. One spicy, one not. It has only been since the 12th that I made it but it is bubbling away. The lids are only lightly screwed on so pressure can release itself.

The perlite I bought for a sweet deal on the night I paid too much for the new ballast at the hydro shop. That should be enough for the hydro plants and the new raised beds. We'll see.

20140115_195025.jpg

And the Jigsaw. It has been needing to be transplanted into a bigger net pot but I didn't have any, nor time to head to the hydro shop so I thought I would give the grow bags one last try in the flood table since the plants are drinking more. If you scroll all the way back to the beginning of the glog, you'll see I abandoned them because they were molding because they never dried out. May happen this time, but we'll see.

Neat Jeff. So you got that guy potted entirely in perlite?

Yep. check back earlier in this glog for pictures of the flood table. All the plants in the flood table (8) pepper plants currently are planted in 100 % perlite. The table gets flooded every 12 hours for about 15 minutes. Working good so far.

Bet that sauerkraut will be amazing....nice!! Hey is that a Ford I see in the back ground? ;)
Haven't done sauerkraut before, I hope so. :D

And, why yes mam, it is a Ford. What gave it away? The powerstroke emblem?

Neat. Hydro is even more mysterious to me than everything else. Sounds like its working pretty well though! Keep up the good work!
Not mysterious at all once you do a little reading. 18 months ago, I didn't know a thing about it.

Jigsaw is looking quite nice!!!
Yes Jeff, I am impressed with it's growth too. I hope the peppers taste good. I've heard mixed reports, but then again, there are mixed reports on teh Butch T and I don't think it is bad at all. Actually works really well in a hot salt mix.

Great plants and very very interesting list! And cool food too! Lol at first i tought Jolokai was a typo! :D Can't wait to see Jigsaw pods!

7 pod yellow powder has an amzing look!

Thanks for stopping in Essegi. Glad you liked your view through my glog.

Not much going on right now. I watered everything last night and moved 3 of the o/w plants up into the living room so I had some more space. In about 2 weeks, I plan to start the balance of all of my annuums and about a month from now for the tomatoes. Anyone know how long tomatillos take? Should I start them with the annuums or the tomatoes?

Here is a shot of how everything looks once I moved 3 of the o/w plants upstairs. Still 4 o/w plants on the back wall and 2 in the flood table, most of them are fruiting so I want to keep them under the light as long as I have room.
