misc Ladybug Porn

Ok, so you've read the title and you've clicked this link anyways. I think we've clearly established that there's something seriously wrong with you. I mean who goes out looking for ladybug porn? That's just disturbing. Anyways here's the ladybug porn as promised...

Egg laden ladybug. I've got about 4 more of these crawling around on my plants.

Ladybug eggs with a future meal

I've already noticed a bunch of larva crawling around my plants. I put the plants with the larva on them close enough so that they're touching the other plants with the aphids. The larva are just so small right now. They should fatten up quite a bit with the feast I'm giving them. I've got a whole bunch more ladybug eggs under the leaves of various plants. Here's to hoping for a fairly decent aphid free year if the ladybugs keep this up.

I ordered 1,800 ladybugs from the only place I could find online that ships them. (Ebay...I know, I know...)Out of 1,800, maybe 40-50 were in some form other than dead...I wouldn't exactly call them alive...but they were not technically dead. The other 1,750-1,760 were very dead. Kinda sad. The guy insists that he try again, as if by some magic he can poof them here faster so they dont die a horrible death inside of a tupperwear container. We'll see i guess.

I thought about ordering them online, but I always worry about them showing up dead. These little buggers just showed up when I had the plants outside in the sun. I could use a heck of a lot more though. The aphids are going to town on one of my nagas :(

I had a pair of volunteer ladybugs lay eggs on (top of) two of my cherry pepper leaves. I've had one clutch hatch today, and now there's dozens of larvae crawling around, feeding...

I'm pretty happy about it. Think the other clutch will hatch tomorrow, making me even happier.

Damn, looks like i should have done some research before killing like 10 million lady bug eggs. I am an idiot!

I've done the same not realizing they were ladybug eggs, 20 years ago I was working in my garden and saw this black little creature with nasty looking jaws hanging about in my herb patch and said what evil creature is this? I killled them..... dah!
Growing up, I was just exposed to the adult and never saw the larvae and I grew up on a farm; today I give prayers to the ladybird god begging forgiveness for my past sins - and maybe I will get some action like in the first pic.

That's really a cool picture. I've bought Lady Bugs from a nursery here several times last year. A big part of them were DOA. I figured they had them in the cooler for a long time. This year I'll order some sent to me because I feel more will be alive. After all the nursery does the same thing then keeps them who knows how long. You find several places on line that have "good buggies".

Peace,
P. Dreadie

The snow here has slowed the natural ladybug population but for $13.99 I can get a 100 at my local garden center, didn't know they had an expiry date - bag said sell buy a certain date.

ladybugs are great and ladybug porn is even better...

14 bucks for 100 bugs seems high as a cats back to me BC...

I am going to get a couple of praying mantis seed pods today to put around my tomatos...with the tomatos being completely closed in by 50% shade cloth, they will essentially be in a "closed" environment...

And who posts ladybug porn threads 2 years in a row:) I've actually gone through 2 years in a row without buying ladybugs or other predators. The year before I needed over 10000:(

welcome to canada.
Its too cold for mantis' where i am located but I do think they are cool - especially the pics on youtube of them eating a mouse and unfortunately a hummingbird.

I guess my local garden centre added their own value added tax for the convenience of supplying the bugs - wonder if the bag actually had 100 ladybug larvae (would anybody count them).

AJ would count them, he would also record their date of birth and how many aphids they ate. :D Probably

If its larve you're buying then yes they are more expensive than the adults and eat a lot more aphids too

AJ ...... Guess you may know this but thought I'd say it anyway. On the praying mantis ..... their world is a cruel one. When they hatch there is lots of them. But the ones that get bigger faster start eating the little guys. They keep doing that until there is very few. It is harsh .... but they still do their job and eat the bad bugs too.

Peace,
P. Dreadie

I know Dreadie, but if I can just get two or three that grow to maturity, then I may be able to establish a population at my place....

I definitely will post pics of them eating anything...if I can catch them in the act...
