Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

CHEERS!

Matty

I was not overly impressed while I was digging....It was pretty hard pack underneith so had to use a spade to cut it out, then the snow shovel to toss it, at least the sun was out.

Was a couple spots that had 2-3ft of snow still....A couple weeks ago it was up to the support pieces you can see halfway up the frame, so would of been much worse if I had done it when I first planned.

I left a pop can in one of those pics for scale to kinda give an idea of how deep it was still.

Whoa Matt, can't believe you still have snow around, thought by now it would be gone..hope you get some sun to help get rid of that
before long...we have a lot of rain/cloudy days here but its slowly warming up during the day..tomorrow will be high of 15C here.(Connecticut)
Those plants of yours are ready to roll out(side) & how. ;) It should get betta soon. :P

Bonjour Madame!!

The last 2 weeks really put the slow down on spring at least in my neck of the woods, However I do think we are finally over the hump and looks like we are onto warmer temps, from the looks of both long and short range forecasting goes anyways.

Hope you guys are more stable then we have been though and look forward to your next set of updates   /cheers!

Well, I finally finished reading all 564 posts in this glog. What a ride! Great job Matt - looking forward to the rest of your season. And with that, I couldn't think of a better place to drop my post #900 right in here. Best of luck this season -- I'll be riding along.

Last night I went out and cleaned out as much of the snow inside of the frame as I could, also tried to take out whatever wasn't frozen to the ground to help speed up the thaw a tad more. Tonight, I am gonna get my wife to quickly help me put the cover on, once that is done I will put in a heater or 2 and get the rest of it melted off, the plan is 2-3 days to start sticking the plants in if I can.

Couple weather shots for my own records really

I am getting desperate at this point, and cant really do much more with the middle shelf stock without topping the lot of them, some of which I did already, and would like to hold off on a buunch of them if I can. I will liekly be running heaters more then I want but its better then setting the plants back or losing a bunch all together which would be even more costly. If the forecast can hit those day time highs I can limit the heaters to just the nights which makes me nervous, so I will be getting up just to make sure everything is ok.

D.R I am honored you took the time to do so and it is more then appreciated. I know that it doesn't offer a ton of informative content which I am sure appeals to many THP members, but keeping it light and social is the direction I felt comfortable with, while I slowly learn from the rest of you folks.

I should add pretty pumped aboot the 900th here...make sure you come back with 1k and save it for that epic PT when you do eh, Cheers my friend!!

God damn it another 30 pager!! I just got done with Paul's last night!

So far you got my attention.. A shit ton of snow in April.. Canada.. One of the few growers on here that has a harder climate to grow peppers in than I do...
.
Alright alright.. Give me a minute I'm diving into this thing!

Hey Matty, you are so right about the NHL draft, eh it should be what place you finish in. Hopefully the Leafs can make a run deep into the playoffs, eh. [emoji16]
So how does one go about getting their wifey to help them out, eh. [emoji848]

Since the sun was out again in full force and I really did not want to waste an opertunity having it get nice and warm inside I took the little guy oput and wrangled it up myself. Not that it's hard but the cheap frames they come with can't really take a ton of tugging and pulling, last fall when it flew back behind that one wood pile you can see to the bush line did not help it either.

Still need to pull some bricks out and lay them around the outside on the extra material hanging down, even more so since I cannot use any of the guide lines for now till the snow melts down, other then maybe dragging some logs over and tying off on them I spose eh.

I was literally only inside for 5 mins wrapping the velcro around the frame and I felt like I was on fire when I came out, I will run a few cords later and get the heaters pumping as well. Still wasn't able to move out anymore buckets or the table since they were still pretty frozen to the ground.

Was this in Texas or some wheres else Scotty?? I played alot of hockey growing up and baseball as well, these days I can barely skate for 15-20 mins without feeling like death after. We take the kids to public skateing as much as we can (4-5xs a month) but next year will be my daughters first year of organized hockey which is very exciting for me, I will also put in a small rink for them to play around on and give some extra ice time

Think the weather is finally making its turn for us here, seem to have a much better forcast for the next week which is what we really need to knock this snow off. I just couldn't bring myself to getting the hoop house ready with a strong chance of snow forecasted each week, seems like we could be past that stuff.

IF they can get this 7 day stretch right, the ground should be bare by next weekend, so today I am taking the plunge and digging out the frame and will gitter all ready finally.

Oh, I grew up on Long Island, NY. Escaped in 1978 ;)  Don't miss the cold none and certainly would never want to pay $10,000 in property taxes for a 1/5th acre lot with 1,600sf. It sure gets hot here in the summer but a sunup to 11AM shift outside is not really bad. It's pretty arid here, as we're just East of desert country. Houston, now is humid as hell...it's just 4 hours East.

Hang in there, it will warm up soon ;)

OK yeah I thought it was kinda a dumb question, like I knew you guys have your winters down there but not to that extent. Would love to spend my retirement days in a place like Texas/Arizona or something similar to escape the colder months at least.

Dang, that’s a lot of snow , you still have, eh. [emoji52]Is that a normal amount of snow for this time of the year,eh. [emoji848]No wonder you might get a little cabin fever up there [emoji2957][emoji3063].
After the Wings being first , I would say the Leafs are my next favorite hockey club. Cause, well they are original 6 and it’s been awhile since they’ve hoisted Lord Stanley’s cup. Wings vs Leafs rivalry used to be a kickass game back in the day.

Even for here this is not really normal to have this much snow left, it all should be gone or at least anything that is not put into big piles. But really what is normal anymore right? You can't fall back on historical averages like we have  been used to for so long, until we really can get a handle on our climate change it's going to be pretty erratic for the foreseeable future. Just another year with bad luck hopefully the fall is nice this year to make up for it..........

Think it has been so tough on all you Red Wings fans because they were good for so long, like until things went south these past couple years, many teams would try and emulate how the Wings were built and they're style of play to which I would say, they were one of the first, if not thee first, to have the speedy type of game that is common in today's NHL.

They gotta be close to having the record for consecutive playoff appearances, the run they had from the 90s till a few years past was unbelievable.
