Just ribbin' ya....

You ever hand 1,000+ people a document about how to register for a new Internet-based system, and in bold, extra-large font in the middle of the page put the two pieces of info they need on it, and thoroughly explain step-by-step the registration process? Know how many calls you're going to get asking for those two pieces of info, even though they say they have the document you gave them right in front of them????

When I first went on this site i didn't have a clue what throwdown meant. There is the actual poll thread and the discussion thread for each month and the throwdown throne thread. It was easier to skip that and click on something selfexplanatory like "growing hot peppers" etc.

There should be a "what is a throwdown?" link that is clickable from the first page where throwdowns are mentioned. This will bring in new people. If you want it be obscure and elitist then you have to accept there will be only a small number of people involved.

It may seem stupid to think that people aren't voting or entering because they don't understand, but every extra link to click on and text to read is work that will turn people away.

I've actually been working on a basic rules post that would go in the rule section of that forum. Thanks for the input.

What about posting each month's official throwdown and rules at least a few days before the throwdown. It really sucks when you have a good idea, do all the shopping and then realize last minute that your entry won't qualify. I know its happened to me several times and others too.
Also, some people may be like me and only go for groceries once or maybe twice a month, and late Friday and Saturdays are a terrible time for me personally to do any shopping.

I have so many peppers that are about 10 days away from being ripe.

...Hey, is a pu-pu platter a real thing, or just a joke played on white people?

Ever since I moved here from L.A., I've been disappointed in the Chinese food restaurants - they generally "Americanize" everything so it's rather bland. Still, one is somewhat close to what you find in any good Chinatown, and that's where I usually go. Found out just a couple weeks ago that they have an alternate menu given out by request only - THE PICTURE MENU. (The regular menu has no pictures, while this one has no words.) Apparently if you order off the picture menu, you get Chinese food like you find in Chinatown. Went tonight, asked for the picture menu, and OH MY GOSH! Real flavor, real spice, and REALLY GOOD. No, that doesn't do it justice - let's try - FANTASMAGORICAL!!! Wow! Maybe I should just order off the picture menu and photograph it for my TD entry.......

Pupu's are a Hawaiin/Phillipino/American/Chinese 'thang. Apps/finger food. I had many Phillipino friends that cooked every'thang from dumplings to langonisa to red pork butt. The butt was a marinated sweet pork sliced thin and grilled. One of the best 'thangs I have ever eaten, especially on a flour tore tillah! As far as pupu's..they can be anything asian finger food. At least that's what my Phlip/Chinese friends tell me. Xie Xie...or rather...shay shay!

The following are just my opinions added to the comment flow-

(from what I know, which is frequently proven incorrect) the Throwdowns name started from a US TV show with Bobby Flay. It's just for fun and bragging rights, there's no other compensation or rewards....other than having some fun, being creative, and using it as an excuse to trash the kitchen!

It is a sideline fun event that has evolved from the folks around here who love to cook with chiles and show it off. It's all about the chiles around here.

I hope it stays as a fun, friendly once-a-month "see-what-I-cooked" and then "chops-to-you, that looks AWESOME" event.

It has seemed that for the last few TD's the general theme has been known a couple weeks ahead. Forum discussions seem to be working good for that. Posting the final theme with rules or at least general restrictions by Wednesday would be good, I can relate to not going to the store every day-

I had some seafood on stand-by for the Cajun TD that I ended up not using because of the rules. No worries...they came out as "left-overs" in the superBowl seafood bowl... and they were YUMMY!

BTW-salsakid has a great idea for next month~
