Meatfreak 2013

With some delay I sowed last sunday, 24 february. First I had doubts to start at all since it was already getting late in season but with all the varieties (thanks to all the great people I traded with!) I wanted to try I had to give it a try

Keep in mind that the list was over 100 varieties, so I trimmed it down a lot. I intend to keep the 2 strongest plants of each variety except for the Piment d'Espelette. Some seeds are already old like the CGN (±8 years), so I got replacements in case the have popped up in 2 weeks.

Bit to much Chimayo seedlings in one hole

I re-potted the Chimayo seedlings tonight, I will give away most of them.

I've an overwintered Birgit's Locoto at home that I pruned severely last year, now bushing out profusely...Maybe I can get a photo of one of those pruned spots with the dead tissue...

Crossing my fingers for warm weather in Holland very soon!

Not that I'm an expert on pruning OW plants, but wouldn't that seal the stem that was living last year but isn't now? As long as the plant isn't in a humid environment and the dead tissue doesn't get infected with Bacteria or a fungus of some kind, I can't think of any reason to remove it.

I hope the same for you!

I have no idea, Rick. Not an expert either but that makes sense. It's not in a humid environment, it's standing in the living room :)

Hey Stefan,
".....It's pretty obvious the pots are way to small for the amount of plants... stupid of me. I shuffled some plants that were smaller to the middle so they get more light."

I think, I think that every year........
Whats your most anticipated pepper this year? With me it is the Bhut Jolokia x Cleo's Dragon.... or Gassy's TS Yellow x Aji Armarillo, or.......hell, thats a tougher question then I thought!

Hey Dave,

that's an difficult question, but all the varieties I'm growing this year are "new" ones for me. So I would say every one I grow is my most anticipated pepper :D Sure I got the regular Jalapeno varieties, but there should be differences between those like podsize and taste wise. The Chinense varieties I've picked are more for the looks so I would say the Biker Flames and Scotch Bonnet's are my top choice there. Although like you said it's hard to pick any :) Of course I look forward to how ajijoe's new cross, Bhut Jolokia Mustard F2 grows out as well. Then you have the Habanero White Giant which appears to be a bit mythical and the Habanero Galapagos Isabella Red from the Galapagos Islands. I'm gonna stop now otherwise I keep on going and name every variety I grow

I think a few of us are growing that Giant White Habanero. I'd be hard pressed to pick a "most anticipated", but that one is definitely in the running for me. Refining Fire Chiles seems convinced it's not mythical and I've read his origin story somewhere else, but can't recall where at the moment. There was some discussion about it being the same as the White 7 Pot, but that seems to be something different. Junglerain has his own hybrid White 7P that he's been trying to stabilize for 4 or 5 years.

Yeah, we talked about this particular variety :) for me it's mythical because I've been trying to grow the variety for the third year now. Last seasons they didn't grow true :(
Anyway, this week the weather was pretty good and I had some time on my hands to spent in the garden. I removed my old tunnel and a lot of garbage that was still there from the previous owner. Stuff like plastic bags, beer bottles, glass, yes glass :( After removing all the stuff we tilled the ground so it's ready for the new tunnel.

Keep in mind it's still a work in progress as I'm doing most of the work alone.

Garlic is showing new growth after the frost, also planted onions this week.

First time visit to your glog. Really like your grow list! Plants are coming along nicely, and your garden plot looks plenty big enough to handle everything. I'll have to stop by after you've planted out!

Thank you for your kind words, highalt. I've been checking out yours as well, but mostly just lurking around  I do indeed have enough space for everything, the right side will be the pepper and tomato side. It has sun the whole day, if the sun shines  Planting out will be around the third week of May, maybe a week earlier if the weather is good enough.

Your plants are looking good Stefan can't belief that your still having near zero temp in Holland my plants have been outside 1 month already. Looks like you will be eating lots of tomatoes, any tomatillos this year? I had good results with the seeds you sent almost all of them germinated and are growing fast now. Hope your weather picks up soon

Thanks Simon. Yes temps have been low for this time of year, normally it's better :( It's even staying like this till the first week of May. Around 15°C during the day and 3-4°C at night. Yeah, I wouldn't wanna miss out on not growing tomatillo's! I love salsa verde :D Good to hear they germinated well for you, those seeds were taken from last season's harvest. Once they are a bit bigger they grow like weeds, very fast. This time I have 3 plants which should be enough for over 15kg.

Looking good, mr. S., very nice looking garden space. Fingers crossed on the GWH (for both of us).

You know what they say, "pics or it didn't happen". :)

Indeed! Would love to see some photo's of your grow, Simon ;) You mostly have Pubescens, right? I love their growth and looking forward to taste.

I'm really liking high hoophouses right now... no getting down on your hands and knees or taking off the poly sheeting to water the plants inside. Nice setup Stefan!

Yeah, Rick. I can stand in there in the middle, ± 6,5 feet high. I'm looking for an affordable second-hand dripping system so I don't have to manual water the plants ;)

Plants look perfect Stefan and that garden plot looks super duper. Can't wait to see them in a  few months

Me either, Jamie. It's still gonna be a lot of work getting everything in ground and maintaining them  I overdid it again ;)
Cool Stefan!

+1 what Jamie said...

 Gary, sorry for not being so active in your guys, topic. The days just fly by to quickly, I do however keep tabs on them :)
