Megamoo's 2012/2013 Glog

I'm in a new house with much more space, better sheltered areas for plants and hopefully less disease in the environment. Unless I win the lottery and buy myself a mansion I'm good to stay here for a long time. The landlord knows about and is cool with the fluorescent light grow setups in the garage, and is happy for me to transform the outside into a chilli jungle. All signs point to a good season ahead.

Winter has just begun, and I've got the germinating and growing on stations setup. Chilli seeds are in the post flying to my door.

This is the current seed list I have to choose from, including varieties ordered but yet to arrive.

Many of these are just one or two seeds leftover from old stock and I won't be planting everything. A lot of the ornamentals will be getting just one plant. I'm might still get some more 7pots and superhot varieties.

The garden beds need a little work, and retic needs to be sorted but I've got a few months to do that. I'll post pictures when I have them.

Bump :) Man I am getting pumped seeing all those worms in your pods! Man this is not on... those worms must go! Pod porn has tunred to Chainsaw Masacre for me!

Umm bump ... I think ... but if I see ass less chaps on a tsmb and you in a gimp mask it will be the last time !

Ok now it's even making depraved me ill so no more.

That is the mother of all maggots... maybe you have overlooking the opportunity in this scenario. You could collect the worms, dry them and possibly market them as chilli dried worms. This could be the beginning of something greater. Or sell these worms to South America and they can put these chilli worms in the bottom of their Tequila for an added twist? Just a thoughts...

Some sort of Pepper Maggot... I found this interesting link

http://www.hort.uconn.edu/ipm/veg/htms/trpcrops.htm

I have planted all my Big Jims on the outside and being the milder chillies they are being nailed by maggots and rodents alike. But I have realised that while not intentional, it has been a great turn of events as they insects and rodents are not reaching the cash crops :) Hopefully there will be some Big Jims left at the end of the season.

M8 when u make sauce does ur mrs kick ur arse to the curb , ie do it out side ? Want to make a batch but from videos I've seen it gases the house out( lol I do that any way after a good curry ) , can ya do it on a BBQ?. Do u worry about ph levels, hygiene is a must (germ a phob) and cleaning jars but if I make it don't think it will be round long enough to go funky

Ps any chance of getting a moo sampler ?

Pee p ps , does every 1 think it to l8 to glog it?

Mmmmmm

Moo thumbs up!!! The macros of worm shots are excellent, nice work both on da chopping and pics :D

Ah the old sacrificial lamb trick :D

U shud change it to moos grub glog! :)
I think a lot of people get the maggots but just don't post them for all to see :P Just like some people won't flick through `a pictorial history of venereal disease coffee table book` but others will eat it up :)

Chilli tequila with genuine pepper worm. Excellent idea!

M8 have u found out what they r yet, apart from buggers
Nah I've just always known them as pepper maggots. I'm not even sure what the adult stage looks like, ie moth or fly or whatever?? I've never had them this bad but I've also not had the pods to lure them in before either.

Since my grow area is a long garden bed the perimeter trap thing wouldn't work.. I planted all my chinenses amongst each other but the Habaneros tend to be favoured over some others. There are a lot of Bih Jolokias and the pods are almost untouched. Plus the pods being attacked are deep inside the jungle so I've been thinking it would be better to have them spread out more?

Well the `mrs` and I parted company over two years ago so I'm a single stay at home father of three and I have the kids about 90% of the time. I can only make sauce when they aren't around because the fumes would bother them. But they aren't too bad, I don't mind. You could do the heating on a BBQ but you do need to have a way to sterilise everything, including the bottles and doing that outside makes it difficult. Of course its safer if you are going to boil the jars after sealing them. If you are following a recipe that was made to be shelf stable then the amounts should be already setup to get your pH levels right. If you are making your own recipe then you should get some pH strips off ebay, they're cheap and easy.
You can have some for sure but be warned they aren't the best I've made, plus they're really mild because I made them for non chilliheads. I had some the other day and it's like just eating basic sauce not hot sauce, barely a tingle :(

I will be doing a Jonah sauce when I get time before winter.

You mean too late to start you're own glog? Never too late, its Perth, we've got months of pods left. Go for it.

Thanks :) I got more than a little satisfaction from cutting them up

Lol I just hand out maps to all the bugs to moos house

They must be coming from somewhere !

I'll be cutting them all up tonight so hopefully take some pics of golden pools of goodness :D

I just had to show the photo sequence to my wife, we are both laughing at your descriptions. The worms aren't funny by themselves, but at least you found joy in the experience.

Ahh got me foot in my mouth again, that's a nice 7 hope no grubage
Nah, best thing that could have happened trust me! I'll cut The 7 Pot up today and check. I think it ripened prematurely because the stem was eaten through but the pod seems intact and good.

MM, the undisturbed pods look awesome. Sorry to see all the grubbage, but you dealt with it in a fitting manner...death. ;)
Those Jonah pods are freaking awesome aren't they!! The grubs deserve nothing less than a painful death.

Glad you enjoyed it ;) Don't think I'll post any more grub pictures, try and keep it clean from here on.

Those maggots were from three days worth of harvested pods so it seems like a lot in one post. I'm losing more pods to rotting which we have figured out came from some dodgy potting mix. Still getting more good than bad overall so can't complain.

The pepper maggot is a fly I believe. Ther are also certain plants that make them more previlent in a garden... but sticky traps can also help.

You must be relieved now that you've tracked down the culprit in the rotting pods. I hate it when I make the same mistake more than once and I'm sure you do too. You've done marvelously well despite your difficulties this year Moo. Cheers

I will have to read up on them and maybe get the traps cos they are really killing out there!

Well the culprit behind the rot is probably some potting mix which I used in the middle pot up stage. So every single one of the large plants had that soil transplanted into the raised bed, right in the core of the root system. Too hard to get out and the potting mix was just a one off bad lot. Bad luck really.

Grubbage bastages!

Go fishin' or sell 'em to the Poms as bait.

Hmmmm having them eaten alive by fish appeals to me :D

Cut the Yellow 7 Pot open and no rot or bugs :) Like I said I think it ripened early because the stem had been eaten through. I get a lot of pods that abort because of bugs or rot and you can tell because the ripening colour is sometimes darker and is splotchy, it starts too soon, and where the stem attaches to the pod turns yellow as the plant aborts it.
Saved the few seeds there were, took a picture but nothing really exceptional to see. Hope the seeds germinate next year and I get nothing but massive pods :)

Orange Habs and two Jonahs
podsdrying003_zpsf2eecb7c.jpg

Another bigish Dorset Naga. I really didn't think they normally got this big.
podsdrying007_zpsdf0d3746.jpg

Two Primos, with holes and bug damage :( The plant is in the back row and its hard to see so didn't notice these until just now. I get it that they don't look like Primos at all either.. maybe later pods will?
podsdrying008_zps8d29d465.jpg

The ripe pods on the Bhut Jolokia that is away from the other plants are being hit so I today harvested any had a hint of colour... before they become attractive to the bugs. I threw at least this many pods away because of damage. It is a different type of damage to the other plants.. it looks like small round nibbles. Don't know what is going on, but I'll go check in the night to see if I can find any critters.

Bottom right is the Dorset Naga. Next to him is my first ever Douglah pod :)
Top left is another Jonah and next to that is a green Primo. It was about the same age as the two others I just picked so it should be ready to change colour.

One tray of Bih Jolokias ready to dry.
yestdry002_zps008e3606.jpg

8 hrs later still going.
podsdrying013_zps9b8fbeea.jpg

Had to put the dehydrator in my room so the fumes could be shielded from the rest of the house and the kids. Smells so good in there :)
Need to get some plans and make a solar one, maybe not as big as Mezos though :P Feels a bit stupid to have all this sunny weather and be drying pods inside wasting power.

Harvested some pods today.

The big Habanero Peach pod had started to show some colour so I picked it rather than risk it the bugs getting to it.
processpods003_zpsacfedf27.jpg

The harvested pods are starting to pile up so I forgot about saving seeds for the moment decided to dehydrate everything.

All the ripe ones getting washed.
processpods006_zps41ab4f26.jpg

These still left to ripen.
processpods004_zps8531cb1c.jpg

Got three trays worth fuming up the bedroom. I might regret this later when I go to sleep.
