Megamoo's 2012/2013 Glog

I'm in a new house with much more space, better sheltered areas for plants and hopefully less disease in the environment. Unless I win the lottery and buy myself a mansion I'm good to stay here for a long time. The landlord knows about and is cool with the fluorescent light grow setups in the garage, and is happy for me to transform the outside into a chilli jungle. All signs point to a good season ahead.

Winter has just begun, and I've got the germinating and growing on stations setup. Chilli seeds are in the post flying to my door.

This is the current seed list I have to choose from, including varieties ordered but yet to arrive.

Many of these are just one or two seeds leftover from old stock and I won't be planting everything. A lot of the ornamentals will be getting just one plant. I'm might still get some more 7pots and superhot varieties.

The garden beds need a little work, and retic needs to be sorted but I've got a few months to do that. I'll post pictures when I have them.

Take her one of your most picante pods and tell her you eat them like candy :D Beautiful pod pics, sad to hear of the damaged ones and bug issues, don't give up da war, I think we're all fighting them :/
Yeah but if she says prove it I might be in trouble ;)

Sucks about the damaged pods, MM, but the others look great. Good luck with the mite issue. I like the flaming watermark idea. Maybe you could have the last "o" in "Megamoo" be in flames...with a bear jumping through it. ;)
That's an awesome idea for a logo... might have to make it my own :D

I have seen this in my milder pods... man that sucks... so close and all rotten inside. Man I would be so sour about that. How the hell do those critters survive inside those superhots?
Some of it is maggots or caterpillars, there were three pods with very large entry holes little buggers don't feel the heat... most of it is rot from fungus or some other similar disease. Possibly caused by bad potting mix, definitely not helped by me planting them twice as close together as I should have.

Hi Moo
insect/fungus damage really sucks, but at least you've got some monster pods to console you. Is the Yellow 7 pod you pictured from Pepperlover.com?
Cheers
I''m pretty sure the Yellow 7 pots are from thehippyseedco. I have some other yellow 7 pots from cappy but they are still small and no producing yet.

Yeah that yellow 7 is ridiculous!!
I know its a bit of a monster!

Did some potting up today. Followed sownseeds advice for a mix which is similar to Neil's but with perlite in it. The baileys soil improver that is a large portion of it is nice and fluffy soil, quite impressed with it actually, hope it goes ok.

Most were annuums but you can see on the right a yellow moruga scorpion I rescued from bunnings ;) Already got two growing I started from seed but it looked at me with those big flower bud/eyes and I couldn't help myself.

Still got to connect drippers to 30 of them but after that my work in establishing the garden should be all done! No more potting up seedlings, everything is in its final place. Now it should be all maintenance and feeding and harvesting. :D

I gave the plants a foliar spray with some seasol seaweed and some chilli focus in the morning, and this afternoon I swear the plants look all perky. Its one of those things that you can't say exactly what it is but they just look happy. After the last spray of sulphur the mite population should be close to zero right now. :)

We are getting lots of sunny days and the pace of ripening is really picking up now. This is today's harvest.

Sounds like you have it all sorted moo!! My yellow 7s can be quite large too and are also from THSC ..haven't seen any that big though!! Although it is severely root bound which doesnt help!! Make sure you give those pods a good clean moo .. sulphur tastes weird ;) :D

Great looking pod shots! The final up pots look happy in their new shoes. So I gather your Bunnings is like our Home Depot or Lowe's. Awesome that they had a Yellow Moruga Scorpion. I don't think our home improvement mega-marts would ever stock anything like that. Maybe this year they will surprise me.

Great feeling when you finish a day of working on these guys and you look at them and they seem happy and healthy. Glad to hear the mites are under control.

I think it is only in his part of the world . My local bunnings won't stock them. They are grown by a member here (although I haven't seen her for quite a while) Candice (wildfire Chilli's) so that's why the bunnings have them

Yeah but if she says prove it I might be in trouble ;)
lol, then just ask them to chop it up and use to spice up your dish, I’m sure they’ll be as impressed as we all are with your beautiful pods :)

While sad, I think we all learn from year to year from these things, you’re still getting great pods, thank JAH ;)

You do know this is wishful thinking ;) our work is never done, hehe

Sounds nice, did you make the seaweed spray or buy a specific kind? I’m currently making some home brew seaweed spray and it should be done mid to late February, hopefully it will work as good as yours. I also took some fresh seaweed and place around the soil on my best plants, not sure if I’m imagining as well but I think the same as you stated about my plants as few days later :)

Great harvest, beautiful pod pics and enjoy the fruits of your hard labors :)

The lime sulphur smelt strongly of rotten eggs but the wettable sulphur had not much odour at all.

Yeah Bunnings is a giant warehouse sized hardware and gardening store. In the last decade they have completely demolished all the smaller competition and run them out of business. They have been dominant and alone until recently when another big store has started up.to compete. They once had knowledgeable staff and good quality stuff now its all cheapest crap and high prices, and you are guaranteed a blank stare if you ask a question of the staff now.

Ah, gotcha!
Yes the trial is only at 5 stores at the moment. Midland, Melville, Balcatta, Joondalup and Mandurah. On her facebook page she is very positive about how well its going and thinks they will be expanding. The only plants they have at the Melville store were Yellow Moruga Scorpion, Butch T, and Bhut Jolokia, "aka ghost chilli". She sells more at the canning vale markets every second sunday, not this weekend cos its Australia Day weekend. I'm happy to give a free plug because she has good products and will give helpful advice. Unlike some other vendors called into question about their ethics on this site, she seems to be doing it for the right reasons.

Thanks for the kind words, appreciated :)

I bought the seaweed spray in a concentrated bottle. It's very popular here and pretty much everywhere.

... ... I bought the seaweed spray in a concentrated bottle. It's very popular here and pretty much everywhere.
I look in on my batch once a week now and it's looking very concentrated as well, I read that I'll have to dilute it with water before using, I can't wait ... if it works as good as yours I'll be making more as I have an unlimited supply of seaweed here.

As long as you wash the salt out apparently its gold.
I've read two schools of thought on that, one says don't and the other says you should. I have a plant that I test stuff on and it's not died from the test without washing the salt but I don't know for sure.

Never done it myself, but I saw some tv about making it youself and he really stressed the washing the salt out bit. Whatever works for you I suppose. I prefer the convenience of having it contained in a small bottle :P I did bury a layer of prawn shells in a pot to see if that gives the plant a fish emulsion like kick.

I'm still yet to find an Asian or Indian dish that beats me. I hear there is a burger joint in dianella called Novembar. They do a Bhut burger. If you can eat it you get it free. I reckon when we organise this get together we start off there...? Nice harvest Moo

I liked her page on facebook so I get all of these updates too. I love the pictures of rows and rows of gorgeous plants.

+1 for the 7 pod monster! It sure does look huge, and if I am not mistaken the plants are fairly big producers as well.

Yeah good idea, but if we bring our own chillies we can build our own burger. We have the technology ;)

They aren't the biggest producers for me right now but nothing too shabby.

This is the top of the big Yellow 7 Pot pod. He's got wrinkles, as discussed in another thread I think this is characteristic of the strain.

Hey! That really IS pod porn  (Is that a stinger in your pocket or are you just glad to see me...)

Very nice pod shots Moo. Looks like you're on top of your game.

Or when you go in looking for the Debco Organic mix the bloke tells you "Nah, we don't sell it anymore because organics don't work, it's all hype, you need a real fertilizer, no way around it." I'm not kidding! (Bravo, Bunnings, just... bravo!) Hey dickhead, how do the majority of the trees and plants in the world grow???

He then directed me to some poor excuse for a potting mix (aka bark mulch packaged in a bag that says "potting mix") and told me it was superior quality... the best they sell. Thing is, I don't doubt at all it was the best they sell.... which says a lot about the quality of the stuff they do sell, doesn't it? ;)

Cheapest crap they can get their hands on and huge mark-ups to match the price of more higher quality items of the same type.

Every harvest I'm collecting almost as many ones that are rotted or bugged out but I try not to post them cos its less like pod porn and more like the slowest shift at the mature age strip club :P

I know...! How did nature ever survive without lots of chemical fertlilsers and pesticides :P
It's appalling what they've done. I get confused looks when I ask about stuff I know they have in the shop. And Masters are no better, they don't even have checkout staff :P Its not like genuine competition either, Masters want a piece of the pie and they are happy to play the same `rape the customer` game as Bunnings and not blow the whistle on each other.

This is from my Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Red plant.
Morepodlings015_zps9dbe0fc4.jpg

Don't look right that's for sure! Perhaps later pods will change shape.

Anyone know what sort of bug this is? ie. good or bad.
Morepodlings004_zps633cc452.jpg

Its has a big flat back like a shield or coat of arms, almost like a stink bug but it was all green. Kept crawling away when I was trying to take a photo.

Group photo of those already pictured above.

It appears the treaty with the ants has been broken. :(
Morepodlings022_zps8da6057b.jpg

I cut of the few infested branches and binned them.
I believe my use of sulphur spray for mites has been deemed a breach of the agreement, specifically the part about using chemicals against the ants, and in turn they have begun an aphid farm. This may need some careful negotiation to fix relations.
