Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

Happy Birthday!! Looks to be about 6' square, by about 2' tall? 72 cubic ft, worth of dirt to fill it I should think - like 9 yds or so if I did the math right.

That is an awesome plant - I have some black scorpion tongue growing (intentionally) surrounded by other plants... It will be interesting to see what grows out next year! It is surrounded by a Bhut, orange hab, purple peru, naga viper, a 7pot (red) a cayenne, jalapeno (boring I know, but it was inadvertent), and an annuum bonnet. Hoping to get SOME crosses from them. We shall see. Going to isolate some of the pods as well, since I don't have much Black Scorp Tongue seed.

I'm looking at buying a new piece of property for next year, its a little bigger than what I have, and the land is next to useless for residential purposes, but, it might be good for growing out chilies.

black scorp ??? i want some of those. i just started this glogging thang, man it takes a while to look at all pages so i can catch up,hehe.. plants looking great.

Thanks sicman, first seeds I harvest on the black Scorpion Tongue I will offer up as SASBE, be on the look out. Joe is right, this is an annum and not related to the TS, but still very cool. :)

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Melissa!   Next thing, that black scorpion tongue is sooo cool, I got to get some of those seeds for next year. Your brother hooked you up big time! Way to go Bro! That should be an awesome bed for sure for the chinense. Oh yeah, the plants and pics awesome as always. Emon069

Hey Emon, thanks for the bday wishes! ;) My bro and husband worked their butts off to build this, and I couldn't be more happy with the results! It's all filled up and ready for plants, saturday is the day! I And as I told sicman, I will offer up some seeds for a SASBE, they have plenty of seeds in each pod so I will have alot to share :) Take care!

Thank you Joe! :D I found a couple more baby Peach Scorps and Choc Hand Grenades in cups, they are going in that new raised bed!

happy beeerrday and a very nice gift from your brother

Thanks!

Thanks for the bday wishes! The bed is 6 foot square and 2ft tall, but it didn't take that much dirt to fill it up. I did leave some room to add soil later in the season, I bought 5yds, potted up 30 5ga, 30 1ga, 12 15ga, a bunch of random sized pots and made another raised bed out front. Oh and I still have some left to do a few more 15ga. That bed is on top of a mound of soil as well, was surprised the potting soil stretched so far! lol

I am looking forward to growing out my own non isolated seeds next year, I love crosses! I will isolate some too for pure seeds. Great minds think alike, I will be looking in to properties as well, not residential, just for growing purposes. I want to grow more than just chiles though, be a source for locally grown organic food, at affordable prices. Dream big or go home I say!

Raised bed, you can tell it's on a mound of potting soil.

All filled and ready for my babies!
IMG_3282.jpg

This is the other raised bed we made this past weekend, gets sun most of the day. So I planted Annums, a couple baccatums and two freakishly tall chinense. Plants so far like it and only wilt a little in the hottest parts of the day, then perk back up after it cools down. They were all in 1ga pots before I put them in here this weekend.
IMG_3268.jpg

Purple Bhut full of pods and more set every day, smart pots make for VERY healthy plants.

This is the color the Black Scorpion tongue turns AFTER purple and BEFORE red. lol

hah, I had similar intentions... The property has two (and a half) fresh water lakes on it (cough swamp cough), and is about 5.7 acres... Its just around the corner from where I live now, and would be pretty near perfect for growing veggies and so forth.

I currently am growing enough vegetables in my garden (.2 acres - i just figured that up today or about 8,000 sq ft) that my familly won't need to buy any from the grocery store for the rest of the year, other than maybe cucumbers, or if we want more variety... But we won't NEED to.

I was thinking along the same lines though, if I can get that property (and its cheap, and owned by my uncle), then I ought to be able to use it to make some money. Of course, this might be the 5 year plan, since if I'm accepted I leave in about 8 weeks for grad school. Either way, I want to jump on the property... I'm thinking of putting pumps in the lakes, and filling large containers for irrigation. I will need to bring in some fill dirt though, alot of it is tightly packed, and close to sea level... But I figure I'll let that part pay for it self.

Happy birthday lady! Great looking raised beds! Everything looks to be on cruise control! I sure hope to coma home to a few baby Manzanos this weekend!

Nice scorp tongue Melissa....I'm playing "glog" catch up, unfortunately will deathly slow internet, but where there's a will, there's a way(and since I managed to pick 2 gallon baggies of various pods for this trip out-Ieven have patience;)!).I missed the Red Brain flowers on mine , now I'm gonna have to set my eyes on checking out the new flowers, never knew it had a green flower!Probably because I was so intent on catching the Purple ones(On these I finally managed a few decent shots anyway!)!Keep up the good work and enthusiasm is contagious!Have fun with the raised bed-the Chinenses will LOVE IT.

Ok now on to the Black Scorpion Tongue, I have two plants, 1 in a 10ga pot and the other in the ground. I am now starting to think the one in the ground is a different variation. The one in the ground is keeping the striping, and the one in a pot the pods turn completely purple before ripening to red! Here is another shot of my in ground plant, you can see some of the pods are getting the red tint.
IMG_3325.jpg

Plant out front that is completely loaded with pods and I have no idea what they are, lol. Any ideas? Plant is at least 4ft tall, starting to stretch again, Grows tree like.

THE LAST TWO looks like either Red Thai or another Thai species

RED THAI was the very first hot pepper i ever grew, nice plant

was it from the HOT MIX??

THANKS YOUR FRIEND JOE

Hi Joe, it does resemble a Thai. I have a yellow Thai going as well, but the pods on this mystery one are much larger. So I'm not too sure yet, will have to wait and see what color they ripen. This plant came from smokemaster seeds, another random seed I grew out from his dried pods. It must have well over 100 pods on it, prolific plant that's for sure! Take care

oh ok

i suppose unless smokemaster can tell what it is you may never know

there are so many cayenne types that look like that, one could only guess and that may not be enough

my black scorp tongue is looking great starting to "bush out" nicely wont be long till it flowers and then pods :woohoo:

thanks your friend Joe

hi the unknown chinense may be a red squash/mushroom red... do you have some photos of the plant?

Hello, I thought of those two as a possibility too. Here is the pic of the whole plant, it's very squat, doesn't want to grow any taller and I have had this plant since October! lol

Thanks Joe, I have a feeling I am going to have alot of "unknowns" this season. Hard to really nail down the exact variety when alot of them look so similiar! Oh well. Can't wait to see what your black scorpion tongue looks like, both of mine are proving to be different, but I like them both! :)

Another mystery chinense, some of my labels for the in ground plants got buried or lost. Going to be playing guess that pepper game all season! lol
IMG_3343.jpg

Not Choco habs fattening up, can't wait to try one of these when ripe. The little tiny pods that ripened packed a punch, I can only imagine how hot they will be when full size!
IMG_3342.jpg

My mystery annum from smokemaster seeds, this thing is loaded, some have turned mostly black.

My newly planted chinense bed, I packed them in this one. Went with 6-8 inches apart, will turn in to a jungle I know. But I plan to do some heavy training/tying down with this bed. When they grow up and get taller, they will have the best view of all the plants! I live on a hill, the view at night is gorgeous!

IMG_3353.jpg

Black Scorpion Tongue almost completely ripe, want to make sure the first few I pick are fully ripe. So I can offer up some seeds as a SASBE :)
IMG_3323.jpg

Sugar Cane anyone :D I sold plants to someone, he accidently killed his plants and needed more. Asked me if I wanted some sugar cane and I ended up just giving him the plants he killed plus some more extras, and I got two types of sugar cane, a couple tomato plants, tomatillos, cukes & elephant garlic! If you are reading this Adrian, thanks again for the trade! Sugar cane is happy in a 15ga pot!
IMG_3329.jpg

Decided to harvest some peppers and tomatoes today, give some of the plants a chance to reload.

Cascabella, Padron, Beaver Dam, Jalapenos and a few mystery peppers. The tomatoes are Early girl and super sweet 100 cherry.
IMG_3354.jpg

I should REALLY stop looking....haha...yeah right, like I can help it!The smokemaster pods are like none I've ever seen. I only had 2 Primos pop, and they got lost in the shuffle...but I have a mystery pepper that looks extremely similar to yours , so it may not be a mystery any more ;)
That Black Scorp Tongue is really awesome....I hope I can catch the sasbe!

Just love your updates, Melissa. That view is great indeed! Looks like your Padrons are bit too ripe even, next time you can pick them even earlier. How's it going with the Chocolate Hand Grenade pod, any progress?

Your grow just gets more awesome as the summer goes on, Melissa.
Your chinense bed should produce some great pod pic opportunities!
5 yards of dirt and all is well :P in your garden.
