Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

I have a few lady bugs... but I have yet to see any mantis in my garden.

I just bought some more lady's this past weekend. Last year the mantis didn't stick around, this year I have had pretty good luck with them! :)

such beautiful plants and pods with a lovely and caring beautiful owner/mother

Melissa. Your black scorp pix are really something. Talk about productive.
That in-ground plant has diff colors of pods? Will the pods on the top pic
turn red also?

Thanks Pinoy!! :)

You lucky SOB Melissa, I want pods......"cry" Nice work soldier.

hahaha, thanks 3/5! You will have pods soon enough, and if not I will send some your way in a month or so! ;) BTW, been meaning to stop in your log, don't give up on the in ground plants at your buddies even if they look like crap. My large bed has lots of stragglers, they looked horrible for quite some time! A few even lost all their leaves :shh: BUT now, they are all acclimated with my clay, and the alabama jumper worms are doing their job. My ground is much softer now and all the babies are starting to take off! Patience is key when amending and planting in clay I have learned, it will all work itself out! :D

Beautiful plants and flowers Melissa.

Thank you! :)

Paul those two plants are really something to look at. The in ground plant is proving to be a different variation of that strain, not turning completely purple before turning red! The potted one starts off yellow, gets the purple stripes, then completely purple, THEN back to yellow/cream and finally red! Amazing plant I tell you! Will send some seeds of both your way this season.

This is the all purple pod, now ready for picking! :)

You are very kind, Melissa, that would be awesome!
Coming from your garden, I'm sure they would be
blessed with your very own special Gro juju :drooling:

That is one awesome looking pod. I love the way it still has a hint of purple on it.
Your garden must be a sight to behold. You definitely have a green thumb.

Keep up the good work, Robert

Lots of pods for you. Curious to see the ripe version of your not choco hab. There seems to be a ton of different variations for that pepper. Twisted,long,round,etc....

Melissa, with the size of your grow, I think you will be looking into some sort of irrigation system before next year's grow. My grow isn't even a third of the size of yours, and I feel like all I do all summer is water and weed. I have irrigation here at the house, but we are on watering restrictions, plus none of the containers are on the irrigation, so I have to do a good bit of hand watering. Putting in soaker hoses at the community garden has turned out to be a very good decision. Not only has it saved me a lot of time already, but it is much more efficient than hand watering. Puts the water on the roots where it's needed, instead of running off before the ground is saturated. As much time as you're spending watering, it would certainly be worth the expense of having some type of irrigation installed.

Glad to see your starting to harvest the fruits of your labors now! Your hard work has definitely paid off!

my blk scorp tongue are putting a little more time into growth the one is getting tall the other "Bushy"
im sure it will be only a short time before they start producing, the are a fast growing annum species

thanks your friend Joe

Awww thanx Robert, all the praise I get really helps make this whole process that much more enjoyable! It's a ton of work, but I am glad others get to enjoy this journey with me through pics. Take care! :)

That pepper looks good.
You have a great garden going.

Thank you!

They will turn red, I had some very small ones ripen a few weeks back. So much variation almost makes me wonder if it is two plants in there?? I was checking the base to see if that was a possibility, doesn't seem to be the case? Hybrid for sure. Either way nice to look at :)

Bonnie thanks for the advice. I will most definitely be installing drip lines next year, I need to finish potting up before I make any more purchases! lol. I actually bought a pump and 100 foot hose yesterday at the hydro shop, so really I could do some kind of drip line with that I suppose. Just need the soaker hoses? I bought it because when I feed the plants teas, the constant back and forth, bending over and feeding with a watering can gets tiring. I was in a pretty bad accident when I was about 23, got severe whiplash and a strained lower back. Really no recovering from bad neck injuries like that, my neck is already in a reverse curve due to it. My second daughter fractured my tail bone when I delivered her, so I really need to figure out something to make this whole process easier on my back and neck! At only 30, if I don't take care of it now, it will only get worse and worse as the years pass. Drip is a MUST next year. Frequent massages only help so much when you are doing this kind of physical labor on a daily basis! I actually have a whole sprinkler system in the front and back that we never use, need to figure out how to put it to use! Next year should be a whole new ball game, want to have some more professional style raised beds built, that alone will help with the back aches! :) Thanks for stopping in and as always for the helpful advice. I scored a box of Diatomaceous Earth yesterday at a nursery, was excited to see it since I have had NO luck finding it anywhere else local. Looks like winter wonderland in the large bed right now! Lol. Going to refrain from watering for the next couple days so it can kill as many pill bugs and earwigs as possible, if not, at only $7.99 for a box, I will stock up for later!

Oh yeahhhhh organic drip mmmmm I call it "garden auto pilot" Add a timer, mulch and rain delay...you can walk away in June and come back in July to pick, if ya really wanted/needed to.

Guru I soooo need to figure this out for next year, drip organic fertigation, yes PLEASE! :D Oh I have some chopped up fish fermenting in a trash can with all the brew leftovers, and some mollasses. I bought the trash can for $10 and it will only be used for this process. I bought another air pump yesterday and figured this wouldn't hurt so it's bubbling away, closed of course. How long should I let it ferment before feeding to the ground? It STINKS! You must have a way with words, until I saw this in your log I wouldn't even chop up a fish with eyes staring back at me! LOL! I bought 6 whole tilapias for $3.50, and the whole time I was chopping them up I had to remind myself, "this is great for the plants". hahaha

Glad they are taking off for you Joe, both of my plants are pretty tall and tree like, but the tops are completely bushy! love them and can't wait to see some pics of yours later in the season. Take care! :)

Jamaican Yellow is loaded at my bro's house, we will call these next pics my "2nd" grow-op! lol
IMG_3418.jpg

Trinidad Seasoning at my brothers as well.
IMG_3419.jpg

I wish I could look at this Primo all day, but it is also at my brothers house!
IMG_3421.jpg

A shot of my brothers pepper bed, all donations from me. Doughlah, White 7 Pot, Brain Strain red, Datil, Jamaican Yellow & Trinidad Seasoning in here. This area was a compost pile for him last year, soil is so dang rich. I am amazed every time I go over and see how much larger they have grown. My brother has been amending the soil for years now, full of worms everywhere. One day my ground will be as fertile, for now he can grow some pepper trees for me! :D I also gave him TS Chocolate, told him to treat it like gold and give it a nice big home so we can spread some of those around this year.
IMG_3409.jpg

Do you know if your current irrigation system is maxed out? When I put in my veggie bed here at the house, I got lucky and there was one unused zone, so the irrigation guy was able to hook it into the existing system. Or maybe you could rip out the part that waters the lawn, and use that zone for your peppers! :P Grass is highly over rated anyway ...

Grass?? Who needs grass?! lol. I am going to have a irrigation professional come out soon and figure it out for me. Right now it isn't used at all. When we purchased our house 1 1/2 yrs ago, the sprinklers were on a timer. I turned them off altogether and only use when I want to. Which isn't much, my water is preserved for the peppers and other veggies! :P

It will ferment and compost faster without the airstone. One good nose filling stir a day in the hot sun will be the quickest. Just do what I do and practice your yoga breathing while stirring...lol ;)

Took out the airstones, thanx for the advice! And does Yoga breathing include holding your breath? I might bribe the husband to stir it for me tomorrow :P

Small harvest from today. Cascabella, Cayenne Golden, Padron, Black Scorpion tongue and some small ornamental type.

This Ancho Mulato decided to ripen before reaching it's full size. Thinking of pulling them all so the plant can re-charge :)

And this next pic shows WHY chili friends are the BEST!! Went to the mailbox this evening to find a very unexpected package, won't say who it's from, she can come forward if she likes. BUT thanks a million, you are awesome! How did you know my kitchen needed some spice?!
IMG_3482.jpg

You got me so jealous Melissa!!! Grrrrrr! First with the pods, then with the cool kitchen garb! I had a few Poblanos this round that are smallish too. I will probably pull them Sunday for another pepper dinner. I think I saw some of those Black Scorpion Tongues at my Nursery...I'll have to go back and take a look since I have a few spots to fill out there. I was planning on all Jalapenos for poppers in the empty spots, but you got me second guessing. How do they taste?
