G-Day, im Mez or Mezo & im new to this part of Australia having come from Perth (Western Australia) where growing chili peppers is so easy (except the heat).

I live in the border ranges in northern New South Wales (bordering Queensland) and its a mixed bag of temperate & tropical conditions, the summers are very hot, wet & humid, the winters are dry & sunny.

Average daily temps.

averagedailytemp.gif

And average monthly rainfall.

averagemonthlyrain.gif

Aussies reading this will already know this, but people in other country's probably paint a picture of Australia as a hot dry/dusty land but this is far from the truth, up north its full blown tropics with a wet season & 100% humidity (yuck). Down south its freezing cold & snow during winter, out west its a dry heat like in the Mediterranean & in the middle of Australia is desert country.

So im now growing for the first time "Super hots" and for a very important reason, whilst working away in Perth i had a double heart attack wich has left me permanently disabled, sadly they are unable to operate on me (bypass/stent) as its to far gone, so having worked all my life (Electrician) im now at the age of 45 claiming a disability pension & i hate not being able to work.

Now i take shovel fulls of dam tablets to keep my heart pumping & id rather not be taking any but right now there no option i have to take them or ill drop dead on the spot. After much reading i found out that cayenne powder has all sort of benefits to your health & well being, especially to your cardio vascular system. I had read that cayenne powder can stop a heart attack in its track & i put this to the test (twice) and yes it does work where the medication (Nitrolingual) had no effect.

So anyone reading this who spots a friend having a heart attack just flick some chili powder in a glass of water as fast as you can & get them to drink in right down, fast. It works within 30 seconds of drinking it & it saved me from two more attacks already.

So there's my life story in a nutshell & some sound advice on how to save a heart attack victims life.
And this ladies & gentlymen is why im growing "Super Hots" to make high heat cayenne powder for cooking to improve my circulation/remove fats & as a "just in case of emergency"

OK on with the first of my "Hots" the Bhut Jolokia, the reason i chose this was simple i just Googled "whats the hottest chili" and up popped the result, however further reading on the interweb i found threads from this forum & names like the Butch T, the Douglah & Brain Strain.

So ive ordered them from pepperlover.com after so many people gave such great reviews, Bhut in the meantime lets look at my Jolokia`s.

Must admit i just love the shape & color of these babies.

More soon,

Mezo.

Its a bruise on my leg, WTF?? so they must have thought it was porno image or something?

There now its on my server, now how can that be thought of as porn, even though some may think my knee & calf is sexy, i don't think it breaks photobuckets terms & conditions, strange,

And the chickens dont detect the heat at all, they actually like the seeds inside not the pods themselves,
and the plant itself they will eat it down the the ground (had two happened).

The bags are made of woven plastic, they drain & they breath (no need to put holes in) .

Had a result this morning, went in to town to do my weekly shop & scored these for free at the farmers market.

bellchilli.jpg

They are Bell Chilli`s.

bellchilli1.jpg

So ill be having a taste test later & saving the seeds if there any good? some old grannie grows these locally so i was told.

Also picked up two big bags of coffee grounds (for the pests) from the local cafe, as much as i want whenever i want she said, what a result i thought, all i have to do is ask & they save them for me,
she said they go through 6kg a week. !!

And on my way back to the farm we stopped off at my local garden center, i had emailed them asking if they had any old pots they was not using, they said "sure just ask when your next calling by"

So ask i did & the owner pointed me to an old barn next to the old piggery & tucked in the corner was two pallets of old pots.

He said take as many as you like (didn't have the trailer hitched this week) so just grabbed a few hundred & there are thousands left i can have anytime. :D

Mmmmwhoaa & here`s my secret stash.

Also we take all the spoiled fruit & veggie from a stall in at the farmers market (for the chickens) and every week i get a few Avo`s, this week i scored seven which will go straight in to pots (the pits i mean), ill have hundreds of Avo tree`s at this rate.

All in all a very successful morning, just need to find free potting mix now.

Mezo.

Nice score on the pots!!! Those pods look like Bishop's Crowns...think there the same, just a different name. Mild on the outside hot in the middle. Great score there too! Baccatums. Should be really good! Looks like you're going to be able to gather quite a few good seeds from them as well! I'd say you had a great day!

Those look like nice Bishops Crowns you got there. looks like they have a lot of different names for this plant

From Wikipedia
  • Balloon pepper
  • Pimenta Cambuci
  • Campane
  • Peri Peri
  • Ubatuba Cambuci
  • Aji Flor
  • Orchid
  • Christmas Bell
  • Bishops Crown

Hmmm, while you guys was replying & i found another name, Jamaican Bell?

Here`s a picture said Jamaican Bell, looks like what ive got.

VEG727.jpg

And not to be confused with a Bell Pepper, or Capsian in Aussie or Sweet Pepper in the UK,

Bell-Pepper-Lalbagh--NEW-FOR-2011182-208.jpg

The lady on the stall said there "hot" (tee hee) & from google they are around 100,000 to 350,000 or just under a hab.

Any Jamaicans guys out there can post a picture of the "Bell" to compare.

Mezo.

Yeah...they're the same thing. The outside will be really mild, but bite into the middle and look out! Great little stuffing peppers. Wish I could find a deal like that! Hopefully I can score some Manzanos for cheap this morning at my farmers market. Once all the nurseries out here figured out how to post their old pots on craigslist for 50 cents each our freebies got thin. I really need about 50 or so 7-10 gallon containers and they want a buck a piece for them used.

Good on ya Mezo, sounds like yo had a really great day there. Pepper score + Coffee grounds + Free Pots = Damn good day in my book. I need to go pick up some more grounds myself. I had 5 gallons of Coffee Juice and loaded up the sprayer and just went crazy all over the yard. Sprayed the grass, gardens bushes, everything. If it had roots in the dirt it got a healthy spraying. I'm really kind of excited to see what the lawn does with it.

Cheers Mate,
RM

Bishop's Crown is a great pepper, my girlfriend brought me one last year. The outside was delicious, little like apple-ish, and the middle part, which holds the placenta, was surprisingly hot! :hot:
So I saved the seeds, and trying to grow it this year. :onfire:

Im going back with the trailer next time to grab a load more of them or all?, ill offer him a variant each for letting me have them.

Really enjoying your glog!

Thanks i try to entertain.

Thanks RM, ill be stocking up on the grounds over the next few months as ive a large veggie patch that`s going to get a ton spread on there, the veggies i grew last year were eaten alive by insects.

Have not even touched them peppers yet but im keen to taste them & for sure ill be saving the seeds.

Ive been flat out stripping "home sweet home" its taken me the last couple of days to pull everything out of this old van im kipping in & fit my queen size bed inside.

vanstrip1.jpg

And when i went to put my bed inside it was to long?? so i cut it shorter by 50mm & bingo.

vanstrip2.jpg

I am going to make up a nice big "L" shaped benchtop to go inside & then ill be able to set up my big PC again.

For now im using my little netbook running off a 12V deep cycle battery out of a cellphone transmitting tower, we are due to get electricity soon along with satellite broadband, im currently using my iphone tethered to my netbook (so dam slow).

vanstrip3.jpg

vanstrip4.jpg

And last night the temperature dropped down to 3°C (37°F) & was was freezing cold (no heating) in the van.

The plants in the tent seem to be OK though & the nine Bhut`s outside seem OK as well, luckily the daytime temps are nice & plenty of sunshine, however im not having much luck with germination now.

Dave`s lot are so slow, ive managed to get two super scorp`s going but two died on me & the Hungarian Wax the sprouted also wilted & died. Ben`s Hungarian Cherries have show no sign of life at the moment im putting this down to cold overnight temps.

If only we had electric connected now then i could get a heat mat & propagator set up going.

Well apart from re-modelling my home (1970`s caravan) this week all ive managed to re-pot was my Wiri Wiri & Piri Piri (pics to follow) that was the week taken up full & i feel tired.

But today (Saturday) is the weekly drive in to civilization to do the weekly food shop, we had to buy to chook food & some more 50gal steel drums ($10 each) and whilst we had the trailer on i thought i go grab the rest of the freebie pots.

A few thousand there.

Im going to give the garden center one of each of my plants in return for there kind offer, they only have six varieties of chilli growing but one hell of a spectacular orange hab (mother plant) its huge & in such a small container (should have got a pic).

Update: Took a fair while but i found a nice little spot to stack all my pots (in the shade) the back ones are over 6ft high, don't know how many there are but that little lot will keep me going for ages.

These will be ideal to retail big healthy fruiting plants down the farmers market next year.

WOW!!!! That's an insane amount of pots!!! Great score Mez!

Cheers mate, just need to score some 'free' potting mix to fill them with.

And another problem is how do i get fragile plants to market on ill maintained, pothole ridden, NSW road?
i guess ill have to drive to the road conditions, possibly buy a horse & cart? after all that's seriously the only thing suited (i jest not).

Mezo.

Holy cannoli thats a lotta pots Mezo

Good score eh Matt,

Ive been putting them to good use (the first lot from last weekend) most of my Amish bush are now re-potted.

AmishBush5.jpg

And below are some of Conor`s Wiri Wiri & Piri Piri that ive re-potted the rest are dotted around the tent.

wiripiri1.jpg

And my potting bench is still pretty busy,

Germination25.jpg

Still got the 'most prolific' to pot & 60+ Asparagus plants plus whats on the bench above.
