mrgg*s PURPLE playground

Starting a purple thread. While there will be pictures of normal green plants, the main focus will be the color PURPLE

Got a few varieties of things that came in, but only germinating a few for fun since it's so late into the season already. If anything, my plan is to toss a few pics up here and there at my leisure.

Enjoy!

Here are most of the things I started. This is mostly just a preview for next year when I run more seed to select through. I know not all of these are purple varieties; a few I just wanted to try sooner than later like the Brazilian Starfish and the Fish Pepper.

Some of the first purple to show...

And some Fooled You Jalapenos. They have zero heat, but should be full flavor. I wanted one or two plants so I could just slice in half, hit with oil, salt, and garlic, and grill. And this way I can literally eat pounds of it should I have the desire (and means) to do so.

I plan to give a bunch of plants away to coworkers. I usually germinate many more than I need to make sure I get what I need, pick the best and then give the rest... away.

Here is a list of seeds I already have, which are some sort of purple or blackish varieties. Not all plants are all purple but purple phenos can be found. I am considering anything with purple in the leaves, stems, or pods (again, only a few of them are being germinated this season):

Yaki Brown
Purple Flash
Black Pearl
Purple Jalapeno
Pink Tiger
Purple Tiger
THSC Black Scorpion Tongue
Royal Black
Pimenta Elisir x Neyde
Redgum TigerMAMP
Peachgum TigerMAMP

The jalapeno I decided to keep :)  - not a purple variety

That's a Purple Flash in the bottom right corner with nice purple cotyls ^

Naglah Brown... yes, I see the spelling error, lol

You have inspired me! Chili for me is not just about the chilies...I am also using them as ornamental plants around the Eco Lodge and to construct a chili maze at some point. These purple varieties are beautiful! I need me some of these. Would you reccommend anywhere in particular to get these seeds, or is it just a mixture of sources. Great grow.

That's great! Really, deep down, I believe chileheads and chileheads alike (those who grow, that is) are simply plant lovers at the core, or they become that way. And for me, there are plenty of reasons that I like growing peppers; they grow as fast as weeds, there's a decent variety of leaf, stem, and overall growth structures, they can be beautiful plants, they flower, they bare consumable fruit, they taste great, they don't take up too much space yet usually have bountiful harvests, and semi-easy to breed properly and effectively. Oh, and I love hot/spicy foods. There are also a few reasons I don't like growing peppers; can't use systemics, so bugs need addressing in one way or another due to their soft, supple leaves - which otherwise is a plus... well, that's pretty much it.

As for where to get seeds, I'm kind of experimenting myself with a good handful of different sources. I have them all listed at work, but I can try to remember some. I'll try to write up a list soon.

Some off the top of my head:

I got the purple jalapenos for sure from Tomatogrowers.com and I have been using them for a few years now. They charge a pretty standard shipping cost, so I like to ask friends if they want to add to the order. Their seeds are always healthy and full-looking. BTW, those purp. jalas are really surprising me. My choice plant even has true leaves showing a color turn to a purple-ish! Every picture I had ever seen of them was with green foliage and purple fruits and partial stems. So, I would be super excited if it turns out to have purple foliage as well!

The Redgum Tiger MMPF and Peachgum Tiger MMPF (not in this years grow, they're for next year) I got from Mojo - http://chilipepperseeds.tictail.com/
The one Redgum I have germinating, I just checked on. It seems like it is still coming and almost ready to break through the surface, fingers crossed. (I check by super gently moving the top soil from over the seed with a poker)

I got all of the three Roxa varieties from Puckerbutt  http://puckerbuttpeppercompany.com/ Just search 'roxa' from their menu search
The Fidalga Roxa will be the main focus of the next wave to chose from.

The Pink Tiger (one of my personal favorites) is from a long shot whereas I just Googled for seed distributors who sold it, since most places were out of stock. And I think I got lucky, because the leaves are looking gorgeous, better IRL than my pics show. I'll try to figure that source out when I get to work (I think I have the link saved).

more to come within a day or three; I'll try to add to that list

This is where most of the peppers I keep will be going. At this point I was mixing in some compost/amendment to add in some inexpensive cubic feet.

Yeah, it's in my front yard, but my garage door is close by so I can pay good attention to the plants here. And most of them are ornamentals.

Dug down 2' of packed dry clay dirt and replaced it with my own cocktail of stuff I had with some stuff purchased. Crap stuff ended up here, lol. It was a hard-day's work.

After final mixing, taking some off the top for random needs, and watering it down. The only things I kept were the White African Daisy and an Aloe plant that was gifted to me from a friend.

Oh, and I threw in a small handful of red wrigglers as the icing on the cake

BTW, around here, that grass color is totally normal, even for late Spring  :D

Looking good...Awesome leaves on the pink tiger.

Thanks! The Pink Tiger is quickly becoming my favorite. It seems to be the most genuinely purple leafed AND has the structure I'm looking for. I already have all of my Pink Tiger seeds sewn now, going to pheno hunt good looking pods (means I have to grow out all of the plants to maturity... working on space now) and plan to share seeds once they are harvest-able.

Just now, while I was sitting on the toilet at work, I was thinking I kind of want to get a cross of the Pink Tiger with the Pimento de Neyde so I can run that cross first thing next year. So I may try germinating my PDN seeds very soon. I want to see how dark I can get those nice fat chinense shape leaves (through breeding, not expecting much right away)
