Mushroom compost

I went to a place that sells top soil and compost by the front end loader bucket. (Which they said ends up being about a pick up truck full.)
The compost that they said they have is mushroom compost. Getting it THIS way would be a lot cheaper for me than getting either cow, chicken, or rabbit manure compost by the bag.
Has anyone used this kind of compost with success? I have read people's posted on here that have used mushroom compost, but I really can't find how good it is.
Also, how much would ya'll recommend I should get for a 25'x100' garden? Would ONE truck-load be enough? Or should I get two? Or should I go with one load of mushroom compost, and one load of top soil? Keep in mind that, where I live, we have red clay dirt. Sure it has nutrients and what not. But it clumps REALLY easily.
Ok, one last question, I promise! lol When I apply the compost and/or top soil, should I put it on top of the ground before, or after, I till it? Probably before, right?

I have great success with mushroom compost but some sources can be loaded with pesticides and other nasties. It doesn't hurt to ask a few questions
Make sure to till it in well to the soil

31 cubic yards will give you 4 inches across the whole garden, which IMO when tilled in should work. Of course wore would be better, also IMO. Of course adding to the bed versus building it would mean you don't need that much.

you may want to get a volumetric on the bucket load

ask if the bucket is "a half yard" or whatever they will tell you

i composted 3 cu ft in 30 square feet and could have used lots more
(but i am not clay locked)
a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet 3' x 3' x 3'

how much is a scoop costing?

how was the soil before? did it grow peppers to your liking?

how about a public compost source?

I will have to ask exactly how big their "scope" is. I didn't even get a look at the front end loader they have. Worst case scenarios is I can buy a 2nd load. Im thinking I will do a load of compost, then a load of top soil on top. Still gonna be about 2-3 weeks before I do all of this. I want to get it all done at one time. It'll be one hell of a weekend, but it'll be worth it. I'll have to set up the sprinklers, get the compost and top soil, dump it all, till it all, then transplant the seedlings. I hope they all make it!

Nitwit....one scoop is $47, for compost. Top soil is about $32.
The land was used as a garden before, but that was a long time ago. Obviously, I will be digging up a little to see what its like before I buy any compost or top soil. As far as a local source, to MY knowledge, this is it for composted stuff. I know someone that will give me all of the horse poopie I want, but I don't feel like working a compost pile. Actually, I don't WANT to deal with composting right now. WAY too much other stuff on my plate!

Did you check with the local municipality? Mine offers leaf compost from the year before's leaf collection @ $55 for 8 cubic yards. If it was old farm land sink a spade and see. If I go down 18 inches I hit old farmland so tilling to it isn't all that feasible or beneficial, but if it is within a shovel blade you may already have good stuff that you only need to till in a little new with.

you gonna do sprinklers you may
wait to put those in until after tilling
so you do not need to "repair" the pipes

compost a whole lot sounds groovy

inexpensive compost sounds kick ass groovy

North Carolina red clay is surprisingly fertile but needs that compost! I've used manure and/or mushroom compost plus topsoil and had much success by filling individual planting holes with a mix of both. Sounds like you're really gonna rock and roll, load up with a couple of scoops if you can.

What's your fertigation setup going to be?

I found a local registered organic dairy farmer two seasons ago. Last season he brought me 25 cubic yards for $300.00 even and that’s delivered. Man, that’s black gold…I'll continue to ride that cow as long as I can.

Ben and Jerry's Vermont Superhot Ice Cream?

I put 120lbs of the stuff in my small 10X12 year before last. Your peppers will absolutely LOVE it! I'd get two buckets full and let the pods roll on

I guess it's settled. I will give 'er a try! I will spread out what I get to see if it's enough. If not, then I'll go ahead and buy another load.
I used Black Cow last year. It worked fine, but I wasn't SUPER impressed. I guess I will see if the mushroom is worth it, huh?

I love mushroom mix!! My douglah grew to 6 ft high by 6 ft wide with it! My squash plants grew to 4 ft and produce so many I had to give some away! I paid 85 buks for a short bed truck load!
