NJA Goes to Hot Pepper Market

NJA , that's a bummer but from my trips to Jamaica I know how customs will search your bags. Of course coming from Ja they weren't looking for pepper seeds ...... I started to say you should simply post them back to the U.S. , but didn't want to get into your business . At least it sounds like they didn't get to rude with you. Welcome back !!

Peace,

Disaster fell.
My seeds were seized .Good news is, I was let off with a warning.
More tomorrow.

Well, it so happened that I had packed them seeds in small bottles and kept with food items like puffed rice etc.
For no reason at all, the custom officer asked why you are carrying seeds, I told him "sir, they are for spicing up my flakes." Then why there is no pepper and only seeds?
This is the mistake, I committed. I had not added pepper flakes with seeds."
This was a clear givaway.
He removed four packs of seeds and warned me that "I could fine you but I won't. "Next time , be careful " and I was let off the hook.
Had he wanted, he could have fined me heavily.

But all is not lost.
One variety of very hot Guntur seeds is safe in one of my bags.
Luckyly, Major hot pepper seed recently developed are left in safe hands in Bangalore for posting .
DESHI seeds will come some time in coming December or January.
My only regret is at having lost Lavanga Merupakkai seeds.
No one will be able to replace them .

So all is not lost guys.
out of four, two are safe.

All will get a share.

What a great journey NJA. You made me travel with your pictures and stories. It's good to know that you're back and safe.

Wow, you got off lucky, great news. In some countries its a very serious crime which would land you in jail for a long time. Its just never worth messing with customs in my opinion

If you don't want them to go through international mail, you could have packed them in a box addressed to you with proper paperwork and give them to customs when you got off the plane since you have a permit. They would have sent them to the proper place for inspection and then mail them to your house. Not sure of the cost, but I imagine it is just postage. Something to think about for next time.

The problem is, the courier service in India is not experienced enough in handling packages of seeds inspite of giving copies of Import licence.
They flatly refused to accept the seeds.
Hence this recourse.

I will fall back on my old method of getting them into USA.

About your method, I will talk to them this week and find out if such a way is possible to carry seeds on person.
Thanks

NJA

Glad that you are ok and no heavy fines or worse. Now I know why my cousin would not bring me back seeds from India when she went. I would have mailed them I think but oh well. At least you saved some and all is fine.

I wonder if it was possible to strap some seed packs around your inner thigh, provided it's in small sealable plastic baggies, and bring 'em in that way.
