OCD 2016

Ok, I wasn't going to do a glog this year. So many projects going on with the house, but part of that is a new garden plot. So, I guess this is the best way to document progress. I'm running a drip irrigation this year to free up my time for other things. Last year I discovered Aerogardening. I started plants late last year I the Aerogarden. They ended up producing and being just as big as my Feb. starts. Sold on hydro! This year I acquired another AG from a thrift shop for $5. I hacked it with a bigger pump and planning on a led hack as well. Next year I'm running a bigger scale hydro setup with my DIY Cob Led build. Anyways I'm on my 3rd batch of AG starts. I'm growing lots of GoatsWeed, Carolina Cayenne, Thai, Chi-Chien, Sadabahar, Chiltepin, Cayenne Long, Aji Pinapple, Genghis Khan Brain, Jay's Red, Srtsl x Bbg and there might be a couple of ones I forgot. Enough talk, here's some pics. More pics when it stops raining. 43 days from seed Aero Babies.

Glad to see you're getting ripe pods Chuck! What are you planning on doing with your Aji Pineapples? I've been using some fresh for salsas and drying the rest. Good start on your hoophouse, and pretty cool that you're putting together some LED grow lights! I just used my prize money from the county fair to buy an AeroGarden for starting Pubiscens and Chinense varieties over the winter and I'm kicking myself for not getting one equipped with LEDs. I didn't know they made them.

Not surprising that you have snow above 9k this time of year... I hope you can beat the hard frost in your area to a decent harvest. Cheers!

Thanks Rick. I'll freeze some for Winter cooking. I might try and make a sauce if I get more. The Aerogarden's are great for starts. From seed, I usually have a foot tall plant with six sets of leaves, in about 4-5weeks. I have a Ultra and a older aero7. The older one, I put a bigger pump from Harbor freight. The Ultra is fluorescent bulb. I wanted the led as well. A lot of people hack the Aero gardens. I won't pay for replacement bulbs anymore. I'll convert them to led or install sockets for regular light bulbs. Some of the led lamp bulbs are pretty intense. You won't be disappointed in your unit. I was thinking about taking some cuttings, instead of OW a whole plant. It was 38 at the house last night. No frost. Thank goodness. Weather like this I expect leaf drop. To muddy to do anything in the yard today. Have a great weekend.

Chuck,,,your Hoop House project is coming along nicely..good job!  I hope the weather allows you to finish. We are still enjoying some warm & sunny days with temps.in the 70's D/50+ at night ...still have  peppers growing on my plants, maybe slowing up some.
I see Rick bought an Aerogarden...I was recently checking on them on Ebay...&  if I do get one I will get one with LED ;)
Still up in the air if I will get one?Is Ebay a good bet?
Enjoy your w/e!

Thanks Sandy

I bought one on Amazon and one at a thrift shop. I always check locally in Craigslist before go elsewhere for used.

I'm up in a Cabin for the night. Enjoying nothing. Nothing at all.

Nothing much going on here. Fall is here. My plants are dropping leaves. I'm hoping the weather holds long enough to harvest the rest of my pod's. Got the last hoop built, and up. Need to just brace it up. My grow light is just about finished will get some pics when I fire it up. I wish, I was back at the cabin. LOL

Beautiful nature by your cabin. I bet it's a nice place to calm down from the everyday's rush... Such beautiful photos.
Listening to nature and working on your 2017 grow list I see. :)
Thanks. I rented that cabin. I almost purchased one just like it last year, until the economy took a hit. Someday.

Have to find time for relaxation my friend. I have a lot of unstable crosses I want to try. I'll try and isolate some of them just in case something cool pops up.

Enjoy your weekend. Thanks for stopping by.

Beautiful pics Chuck... all of 'em! :)  Will you spring for UV stabilized greenhouse film for your hoophouse or go with 4 mil sheet poly for next season? I used to staple up the sheet poly on a screened in porch in the place we rented before we moved to Greenfield, and it only lasted a season before becoming brittle and falling apart.

Looks like your 2017 chile grow list is taking shape, good luck with it!

We're probably a couple of weeks away from frost, but the Bhuts are not liking the colder temps... they've dropped most of their leaves, but the Aji Pineapples and the other Chinense varieties in the raised bed out back are doing fine and ripening more pods. We'll see how far we can milk it. I'm figuring that the chile plant I overwinter this year will be the Aji Pineapple. The Lima Market Rocoto didn't produce a single pod in its second year, and I want something that'll really benefit from a head start this coming spring.

Cheers!

Hey Rick,

I'm going to use, I think it's 6mil nylon reinforced poly. A friend gave me a brand new roll for free. It's 20x100ft. My hoophouse is 18x12. I used to 10ft sticks of toprail fence. So that's a 20ft radius. So that roll will last me many seasons. I only plan on using it 3 months in the Spring and a couple months in the Fall.

My Aji Pineapples are dropping leaves like crazy. My Chinese supers are doing well. They recovered from the hail damage. Stunted, but pushing flowers like crazy. I've got one single Srtsl x BBG. I have 2 Genghis Khan Brain's. I might cut them back and experiment with my new light. I'll start all my supers in January. I want trees before I go outside. LOL. I'm going to try and go straight to ground in March. I'm going to use your plastic mulch. I think, I can keep the ground from freezing. It could just be wishful thinking. When is the earliest you go outside with row covers?

Here is some pics. My Super plants are looking good. They are trying to push flowers and shoots. As I said earlier, I may trim them back and promote bottom growth while the weather is favorable. I would love to OW something. Never done it.

My single super and my Caribbean Red. These reds are from plants I purchased from the nursery. One plant had a couple of cool looking pods. The rest are way off in shape. I love the looks of these. I may save some seeds for next year, unless I find a good reliable scotch.

Those Caribbean Reds look very similar to the pods I pulled from one of the "Carolina Reaper" plants I purchased at a local nursery earlier this year.

Great pictures of the cabin Chuck what a gem of a place to get away and relax ... Nature at its best .... the poly tunnel experiment should work well and increase your season ... I swear by mine just wish it was twice as big the mistake I make is not providing enough shade in the hardening off stage ... all the best if you choose a plant and OW

Glad you got some down time at the cabin getting away is a major plus! Great picks BTW!
Good luck on the OW project. The hoop-house should do well for you. Use every trick there is to extend your season. ;)

Wow, you're already planning ahead :P  I've been so busy here I don't know where I'm at..LOL

Stay warm!

You can never tell on nursery plants, when it comes to peppers.

Thanks John.
My tunnel isn't done yet. It rained and is muddy out back. It delayed me from reinforcing the structure. We are going to get a cold front this week. Temps will drop to 32f/0c lows for the next week. I learned early in that most Chinese do better in the shade where I live. The sun is brutal over 5000ft here. I'm planning on using shade cloth all next year.

I'm still debating on the OW project. I might start a few rare crosses and clone them. I had 4 people send me pod's this year. Thank goodness, because I didn't have much going on. Nobody wanted anything in return. I figured with my new lights and a green thumb I'll offer those guys some plants. You of coarse, will be on that list too. That's if all goes as planned. You know how plans go. I'll check out your glog and see if there is something else I can find for you to do. LOL!

Same here on people sending me pods, this year was very close to a complete fail. A late start and tons of critter damage. Getting a few peppers here and there, very few. Been busy dismantling the old pool deck, my goal is a fence made from the materials to block the winds, and keep the rabbits out. Then make it bird proof, because they eat the tomatoes and grapes big time. Now to find a way to keep the coons from stealing Peaches! Anyone have any ideas? Claymore's?

Ain't that the truth.  I'm just glad I learned that lesson this year, and without spending a bunch of money on pepper plants at the nursery.

I normally don't buy plants from the nursery. I need to fill some spaces. I bought Chiltepin and those Caribbean Reds. I had one of those pod's last night. It was pretty good. A lot better than the nasty orange Habs they have in the store. If I buy plants online, I like Jim Duffy. His plants and seed stock is awesome. Anything I've ever grown from him has been the biggest and best plants of the garden.

Hey, Charles. Sorry to see the weather is giving you fits, brother.
Your super varieties are looking awesome for October!  I see more
pods in your future - good luck getting that polytunnel installation
completed.  It will extend your grow season big time, for sure!

Keep on keepin' on, my friend!

The only reason I even bought from the nursery is because they were selling them for $2 each.  It was too good to pass up.  So I picked up 4 Bhuts and 4 Reapers on a whim.  Thankfully, the Bhuts grew out pretty true, or true enough for my liking.  But the Reapers definitely did not.  I still feel that I got my money's worth from them though, regardless.

Oh, and the majority of the plants I grew this year were from RFC.  I ordered one of his FB plant specials in the spring, and I am really glad that i did.  I wound up getting a lot of peppers from the ones I put outside...and I still have a Chocolate Hab, Chocolate Bhutlah, Chocolate Brain Strain, and Red Bhutlah x Bubblegum 7 that I will be keeping inside until next spring.  I'm using them to experiment with trimming and training techniques, and also seeing if I can keep them alive all winter long.

Chuck, I just finished your entire glog,Added yours to Dew's and Rick's which I follow religiously.I worked 7 years for a huge greenhouse in maintenance and replaced all the roofs.20 x 60's and bigger. Are you running a top pipe end to end,And are you thinking of putting in a roll up so you can open it on nice days?
