I did. But I think I should have planted it when the roots were not as long. Learning here. It's all fun as long as you learn something. If I had a longer season, I would take cuttings of my favorite plants. I see some OW's to keep my mind busy. Winter here is no fun. COLD. For me anyways.
 
I've considered OWing via cuttings.  For one thing, cuttings don't take up as much room as plants.  It takes awhile for them root and they won't be growing much during that period.  And even after potting them up after they root, it will take awhile for them to become established and start growing.  It seems like done right, it could be an optimal way of carrying preferred plants over to the next year.
 
I have limited experience with cuttings. But so far they seem to do better if the plants are young. I need to try again with a root solution, instead of just water.
 
And yes when we stop learning....game over! One has to try something and go from there ;)

I agree John. It would seem like a good way to keep the plant going. I'm considering it and Bonchi. I think the Bonchi might be a good plan for me. I have limited windows for light so small scale might be my best bet. I've read you can just plant them up and grow them out in the Spring. I'll have to look into it more. It's sad for me to go out and look at all my plants knowing that in a couple months there life cycle will be over.

I have cloned in the past using a root gel, Rockwool cubes in a humidity dome, with a heating mat. I used to get 100% success rate. I have some plants that are still in growth stage. Nice tender shoots. Might think about giving it a try.

Carrying over the genes via cutting would be the preferred route if that is what you want to accomplish, but should a 2nd year plant produce loads more for you the next year?  It hasn't been the case for all my OW this year, and I am seriously thinking about rooting some this fall as well.
 
I had very, very limited success this year with OW's. I expected earlier pods, not! And just one really did anything, and it was the one plant I just left alone. A JA Hab I left in a 5 gallon container, no root cut and no top trim.
 
I know some others did well with theirs. But I don't think they can hang with the rapid ramp to hot weather we have here. So perhaps the more Northern growers can reap the benefits , but here, I'm not impressed with the results. And I gave it hell ;)
 
So cuttings may be the way to go. But I'm in a "too lazy" mode at the moment :shh:
 
My burgundy plants are loaded, my red fatalii is loaded.  two bhuts are mediocre as is the ts yellow.  Primo has some pods but red brain has none.  Datil has some small pods and some green that might make.  I am not sold on OW with my results this year.
 
I still plan on doing some more OW as well as taking a few to a year three.

I've been reading Pepper-Guru's OW post again and again. He seems to have it going on. I think if I can keep a couple in there original containers through the Winter, I can pot up in the Spring. Not as much stress. I was also thinking since I have good weather for the next month or so, I should Bonchi some now. I think last year waited to long and the weather was to cool for root and veg growth by the time I but them indoors. So jump start might be my plan.

That's what I did with my OW Douglah last winter... left it in its 5gal airpot, and put it in the ground in a raised bed when I planted out in April. The OW Manzano was in the ground last year, but I dug it up and potted in another 5gal. airpot, then transplanted in the ground in the raised bed. The Manzano is more cold-tolerant, and that's why I think it took the stress better than the Chinense varieties. I don't think I'd bother with over-wintering most Annuums, as they seem to do better without it... a possible exception is the wild Pequins and Tepins. They'd need some light in an unheated basement though, so I'd only put them in one with at least one window so they'd have enough natural light rather than paying for the electricity to keep them alive through the winter.
 
Nice colors Chuck! Glad to see you're getting ripe pods. I love Indian curries, and your Sudabahar would be perfect in them. Have a great holiday weekend!

Thanks for the OW info. I'm going to try and keep the Chiltepin indoors as a house plant and Bonchi a couple for the window. Next year I want to go back to were it all started and grow a dedicated Annuum patch. Don't get me wrong, I love the supers. I think there is a lot of potential for some great Annuum crosses. I love the Tepin x Lemondrop. One of my favorite peppers. Will send you some Sadabahar when they ripen. Getting close. You have a great weekend as well. Thanks Rick

Thanks Scott. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Weather changed today. 97 in the shade out there. Went and hiked Goblin Valley this morning. Thought I was 18 again. LOL. Jumped a small creek and tweaked my ankle. Maybe a tendon. Resting it as we speak. I hope the pods I have reach maturity. Will review that 7pot when I return. Maybe it will distract the ankle pain.

Wasn't today about fun? It happens every so often, I have 18-19 years on ya, and feel your pain. I refuse to slow down, you just can't. The words of Tom Petty "You never slow down, you never grow old" I live by them! Ice is your friend tonight, stretches and all that when you can. Tiger Balm is a friend of mine too.
 
In all my years I've sprained the right ankle twice (never let the first heal), and the left once. Both times it was really weird conditions. I think my dogs have helped me strengthen my ankles, they always dig holes, traps I say....and I'm always stepping in them. LOL
 
Rest up bud and relax tonight.
