seeds Ok so I planted my seeds over 2 weeks ago and nothing yet. Should I worry??

Ok I bought Miracle-Gro Seed Starting Potting mix. Took styrafoam cups and filled them up with the soil. Poked a hole in the soil with my finger about an inch or so deep. Dropped in my seeds and put them in a damp dark spot, where my water heater is.

Ok so I have done this with 5 different plants, a Dorset Naga, Trinidad Scorpion, Fatali, Carribean Red and an unidentified pepper. None of them have even shown any kind of anything in just over two weeks. I come home everyday and make sure the soil is damp and still nothing. Have I not waited long enough??

An inch is a long way down for such a small seed. That doesn't mean that they won't come up, but it will take a little longer if they do.
The superhots can also be slow to get going - up to three weeks sometimes... so keep them moist and warm and wait!

Ok thanks. After thinkin I really dont think its that far down. At the most it might be down to the first bend in my finger. Ill give them a few more days and see what they do.

I normally plant mine 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Keep them warm, moist, not wet and hang in there. They need light as soon as they pop.

Yup patience is all you need. Think about how far the seeds are sowed in nature, usually on the surface.

I'd throw them away.

It may take them a couple more weeks to sprout but I would water from the bottom, not the top.

In my experience, when they are that shallow I get too many seed hats. 1/2 to 3/4 inch they always come up without the hat.

Here's my mystery chiles planted on 2/16/09, coming up like gangbusters now.

I'd planted them around 1/4" deep, and as you see, about 1/3 have hat issues but nothing major. The biggest one..originally had a stuck cap that I'd done surgery on, now it's happy.

Hell, it was one of those "chuck it in, see if grows" kinda deals...'cept now ALL of the lil buggers are coming up..haha!

If one 4" plant had 20 chiles on it....

I'm doomed. ;)

I have a heated mat, Savinas and Dorset Nagas came up within a week and kept popping up over the following weeks. Then nothing popped up, was ready to chuck all the seeds (about 6-7 weeks after I planted the seeds) then two Bih Jolokias popped up, one of which I killed ... (Jiffy pots dry out super quick, and the other is happy in Hydro). The way I see it, it doesn't hurt just to leave them there and see if anything pops up. I think its been about 9 weeks now, they are still on the mat, if something else pops up then great, if not, then it isn't hurting me just to leave them there.

do you have any holes in the cup?

If that was to me, yes I do.

Yes, that's using an old monitor as a heating mat...and a youghurt lid for drip control. Keeps it right about 85-90F. :)

(Alternativly, ya can dbl-up the cups with a rubber band on the cup w/ the holes to suspend it in the "catcher" cup on the bottom w/o any holes.)

I punch 4 holes equally around the sides about 1/2"-3/4" up, and about 3 holes in the bottom.

Just used a Pencil...seems to be a good size.

I normally use the cups for seedlings, but with shallow dirt in the cup, mebbe 1.5" worth, it doubles for starting too.

What I think it is is you have a full cup of dirt to heat and keep moist, etc....rather than a couple inches worth. I'd bet your temps are low IN the soil where the seeds are.

Seeds need both moisture and warmth to figure out it's safe to come out. After all, you're recreating Spring/Summer. ;)

I do not have any hole in mine. Do I need some to let the soil breathe a little? Maybe thats the problem?
That could be it the seeds dont need to be drowning the seeds they need to be moist

Yeah now that I think about it I bet the problem is I have too much soil I am trying to keep warm and moist. I am going to try some more a different way tonight.

That too.

My cups, they get a good first drowning..then misting when needed to keep moist.

Mine also covered with clingfilm...keeps heat & moisture in..but I poke a hole in so it aint a swamp.

I also use a weak bit of H2O2 (like tsp. per gallon) in the water to enhibit mold and other water-born nasties. Tap water is usually a sewer.

Better way is to water with weak Chamomile Tea..it's wonderful stuff.
