PaulG 2014

Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Just a quick update on the wild Texas Tepins.  This one has the most ripe pods; all will have to go to the greenhouse when and if I need space for starts in party cups:

I came home to a really nice gift today, thank you very much Paul! I've tried a little bit on the end of my finger and it warmed me up from having walked the dog!
Can I ask what chillies were in each? How many chillies are in my bags? I've never made powders, I have a dehydrator. It seems like a good storage method.
Thank you again.
Happy holidays

Hey, Paul, I sent out a lot of envelopes, and I don't remember what was in all of them.  What do the labels say?

As for the number of chilies, that is really hard to say.  I'm not sure I could even guess,  As for weight, the figures
I've read range from 6-10 times dry weight for fresh pod weight.  So a half ounce of powder might be 3-5 ounces
of fresh pods.

If you have left over pods, drying is a good way to keep them.   I put mine on canning jars of various sizes with a
couple of silica gel packets in them and that seems to keep them pretty dry.  I also put a little silica gel packet in
my shakers to mitigate clumping and absorbing moisture from the air.

I too got some fire in the mail:
Just beautiful powder Paul!

Thanks again!
Beautiful photo, Scott.  the colors really shine in the sun!

I hope you enjoy them, buddy!

Great stuff Paul! Already started in earnest ... I like your style   Or what passes for 'style'   ;)

Thanks, Tristen!

Have the 'mite' problems been figured out, yet?   I'm
hoping that's not what the problem was, and that the nutrient issues
were the cause and easy to fix.

Scot's photo is awesome ; really caught the colors in the sun!

Wow... seedlings already! You're hot off the mark for 2015 mr. G... good luck! :)
Hey, Rick!  Funny how the Aji Amarillo and Manzano have
to be the first sprouted and the last to harvest!

Not sure if I'm hot off the mark, but it's always good to have
seedlings to check out 15 or 20 times a day

Heh, heh... I can relate to obsession Paul... ;)

I can't speak to the Aji Amarillo since I haven't grown it yet, but the Manzano is one of the slowest growing chiles I've ever tried, and it takes quite a while to get to the size necessary to support pod production. I doubled the number of pods I got this year by over-wintering one from the year before. That plant is back in a pot inside for the winter, and I'm gonna cut it back as little as possible to see if it'll make a difference next year. I spotted a few aphids on it last week, so I took it down to my unlighted cellar and sprayed it good with pyrethrin, then left it down there for a few days before bringing it back upstairs. It dropped most of its leaves then, but the ones that stayed are smaller and healthy-looking. I hope they'll provide enough sustenance for the plant until I put it outside again in the spring.

Cheers!

I had my best manzano success with an OW plant 2013 season.
Set lots of pods and looking very healthy until i killed it.
Your plant should be gangbusters going into it's third year!

Okay, Paul.  You've inspired me to germinate some rocoto seeds in about a week, and see what I can do at the southern end of the State.  I just have to pick a good spot here once it goes outdoors.  Partial shade, huh?  Not good...

You could make some shade cloth out of burlap material.
Or use cheesecloth like Shane.

Glad they arrived safely, Tristen.  We've had pretty good luck with the international mail, eh?

I hope you enjoyed them!  I had some of your F1 powder on a pork chop tonight - wow!

I received an awesome powder package from BPWilly a few days ago.  They are very nicely
textured; fine and fluffy.  I've been busy grinding and tasting my own stuff as well, so haven't had
a go at these, yet.  I can tell by the aromas they are going to be killer.  Thanks a million, Bill, very
generous of you, buddy:

Fixed up a couple of sets of powders for my neighbor.  He found these great racks and shakers
for $15+ on line.  Twelve varieties in each rack, 1/2 oz. per shaker:

What do you think a rack of these would be worth if it were a product?  The rack would hold 6 ounces of powder in all.
