The most dismal results since I started using the heating mat.  I don't know what the 
is, maybe the cold nights in the garage.  51/162 total germination rate is about 31%.
This is 26 plants if all survive to plant out.  Going to try to start some of
the Chocolate Habanero from RF and BOC from Jason - tonight into the soak.
 
edit 1/15 - another Scorpion hook today
edit 1/17 - one BOC hook today.  Some seeds have germinated in the Jiffy Pellets
after transplanting.  After a count this morning the results updated in the 
chart above.  60/162 = 37% 17 days after sowing.  Later same day, another
BOC hook has emerged 61/162...
 
edit 1/18 - one more MoA today... 62/162
 
edit 1/19 - one Chili Pepper Institute Caribbean Red Habanero finally
came out...63/162 = 39% - 29 seedlings underway.

 edit 1/21 - a few more hooks have emerged in transplanted Jiffy Pellets, many 
of which have now germinated 3/3 seeds...Grand total 73/162 = 45% 
after 3 weeks since sowing.

 edit 1/23 - first hook out of the second round - one BOC 2013 from GaGrowhead.
 
edit 1/26 - Aside from the second BOC 2013 to emerge yesterday, there were four
new hooks this morning: BOC 2013; F5 PDN x Bonda :party: ; Caribbean Red
Habanero CPI; Scorpion 5th gen.  79/162 = 49%

Well the Winters here are kinda like the Spring I'm used to back in the Netherlands, so I'm trying to wrap my head around it being actually Winter at the moment. The orange trees are having a lot of new growth and even small buds, but most trees that lose their leaves are still dormant. I guess Spring starts when the temps go up again, which is in about a month! It's mostly 13-16 C day time and 4-8 night time, although I had to move some old cayennes inside a few nights. We caught some northern winds and it was even freezing at night. Pretty nice climate for pepper growing, although I'm anxious for high summer, when temps can reach 40 C and above.

BTW, to answer your question I'll scoop a couple of inches of soil out
of my containers and replace and amend the remainder  it with something
else in a month or so.  I have chosen the most resistant plants for seed
stock, and injected some new genes into the grow list.  Will try to minimize
contact between plants during indoor part of the grow.  Hopefully that
will help to minimize the BLS this Spring.  Plus, I'll be more vigilant   :eh:

We're pulling for ya to get a handle on the BLS issue this year. Keeping the individual plants separated sounds like a good idea. Taking care not to splash water from one to the other does too. Will you bottom-water only then? Put each pot is in its own cup so water isn't shared between plants when bottom-watering?

That's how I usually do it, Rick.  Very little water up top.  
The top 3/4" of the soil in the beverage cups is dry when
potting up time comes.  I think using the resistant varieties 
as good a strategy as any. I also bottom water them in the
2-liter pots.

​6/12 BOC 2013 for 50% germination rate.  Still no show for the F2 2013 and
Chocolate Habanero 2013 from the second set of seeds started 1/15.  
 
Also, on 1/28 another Red Habanero CPI, and 
today another Scorpion 5th generation.  81/162 = 50%.
 
edit 1/30 - One more BOC 2013 hook today. 15 days since sowing.  Remaining
Jiffy Pellets tossed out except for the F2 and Choc Hab seeds started on
1/15; they can go another two weeks just for fun, but not sure if I'll bother.
I have to give away 7 plants as it is.  Good problem to have!
 
edit 2/2 - F2 and Choc Hab seeds tossed today, no room anyway, thankfully!
A few more sprouts in the transplanted Jiffy Pellets - 5 Scorpion and one
Caribbean Red Habanero.  Chart updated above  86/162 = 53% - 1 month total.

Thanks, Charles.  The germ rates haven't been great, but
I have enough starts to populate my backyard grow space.

I'm about done germinating, Rick.  Any plugs unsprouted
by the 31st will get the heave-ho.  50% is the worst germ
record I've had since starting to use the heat mat.

I think we are about done, Giancarlo; 4 weeks is long
enough.  We're outta here   :seeya:
 
I have enough plants for this part of the grow.  In fact,
will have to give several away, so not concerned at
this point.  I'm glad I planted lots of seeds and had some
extra Jiffy Pellets going or I might not have had enough
this time around.
 
Updated germination record.
 
It has been one month since seed sowing,
and three weeks since the first hook emerged.  
The last I transplanted emerged yesterday, 1/31.  
50% of the hooks emerged from 1/9-1/11, then
the other 50% dribbled in over the next 19 days.
 Right now, I have 38 plants going forward to 
potting up.  The first to emerge are about ready
for a 2-liter pot.

In a week or two I'll give away a few here
and there so I can get down to 32 for plant
out.
 
Have started watering with a 1/4 strength AK Fish
Fertilizer and Cal-Mag mix.  Will slowly increase the
strength of the Fish Fert over the next few mixings.
Plants with 4 true leaves get the fertilizer.  Regular
water for the others for now.  Bottom watering and
removing the water sleeve the next morning to air
prune the roots trying to grow out the drain holes in
the planter cups.
 
thats so awesome.. i see that you start your seeds on distilled water.. i might have to copy you because to be honest all my original seeds i saved where sort of duds.... i cant wait to use the one that some great people send to me.. :) best of luck.. and I luv your plants.. i have one to many plants im trying to build a thermal solar greenhouse this year... where i can grow all year long... so work in progress :)
