No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.
 
I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.
 
Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate  :rofl:
 
c. chinese - 10 varieties: 
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken 
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

I almost fried 20. Never used a LED array before and hung the light at about 8" above since this setup is in a colderarea. Seemed like a smart move at the time since the light is so cool. Now I have some bleached out and otherwise discolored leaves. I pulled the light up to about 2' when I added new plants. I think they'll be okay

They are very effective. I just have the old style with flouro tubes,
and I've been using it several seasons without any problems.
Just pay attention to cleanliness and they are pretty hassle-free.

Quick update. The Aji Amarillo in back, Red Rocoto in front.
15 days since hooks for the Rocotos, 12 for the Aji A. Small
numbers on tags are days from sowing to hooks:

Second sprouts in each cup will be propagated as cuttings.
 
Okay, started germination today. Seeds soaked in 1:20
Hydrogen Peroxide solution,
 
Rockwool cubes soaked in water with a teeny amount
of liquid fertilizer (4 drops Shultz Instant per quart of water.)
28 of the rockwool cubes soaked up 2 quarts of solution,
about 21/4 ounces per block.

If these do not germinate in two weeks, I will try something else,
either from my own seeds or from some other source. Now just
to wait. I will have to be careful with temperature until I see how
the cubes do in the little propagators. They are sitting on a sheet
of black plastic hardware cloth with about a half inch of space
between the cubes and the bottom of the propagators.

Here's a pic from the 2017 grow.
 
I wait until there are a couple of true leaves, then
cut the sprout off below the dirt line and drop the
cutting in water. Takes a few weeks for the roots
to emerge, then they grow really quickly.
 
Here are the plants that came from the two cuttings.
they were in #3 cans, and very productive. They didn't
make mature pods much later than the other F5's:

This will be my first 'real' grow since 2017, as
all I grew in 2018 was Trippa's cross. I read your
comment in Marcv's blog about the SBTFM. I'm
hoping Trippa will chime in about this variety. 
 
The Red Rocotos and Aji Amarillos have undergone
a growth spurt in the past four days. Rocotos putting
on two new leaves and the Aji streaking for the sky
as is their habit. Getting big enough I needed to put
the Mylar reflectors on the AeroGarden:

Really cool Paul!  I've been wanting to see this since you recently mentioned it. If you can avoid disturbing the earlier or stronger sprout and hardly lose ground on the cutting, what great tool to have in the shed.  What does your success rate look like on this practice?  Do you feel pretty confident in it when it "really matters" versus a soil transplant?

I've only done this twice this way, 2/2 rooted.
In 2012, I placed a bunch of cuttings in seedling mix.
Not totally successful, although some did take. I haven't
tried rooting in the AeroGarden, but when the roots come
out of these, I will put them in the AeroGarden to finish
rooting, like I did with the PdN x BMJ in 2017.

Thanks for the info and the pics. I've never rooted any seedlings but I've rooted plenty of branches. That takes months.
 
Since I have up to 4 seedlings in each of my 30ml starter cups and jiffy pellets, I've been clipping them off. Seems like a waste. Maybe wiggle/pull some of the extras out and hang them in test tubes to see what they say.

If they are difficult to get out of the cups w/o damaging
them, just cut them off below the surface as far down as
you can, maybe even with a little root attached.
 
They should root in a few weeks.
 
Good luck if you decide to go that route.
 
This reminds me that I recently had a late germinating (like 30+ days late and after a pot-up) 7 Pot White sprout pop up next to it's long-established sow-mate.  I just yanked it out of the soil and there was literally only an mm or 2 of tap root left where it broke off.  I decided to throw it into Kratky and it grew out fast and fine.  I've always hated disturbing roots when multiple germinations happen in the same container, but don't want a million containers of one seed each taking up space either.  I'm glad this got me thinking along these lines because there just has to be better ways than I've been doing this.
 
It looks like with Paul's method you're cutting just below where the colored stem portion transitions into the "root" portion and you're controlling that you definitely get a piece of that root.  Pulling it could break elsewhere and you might get more or you might kill the seedling.  I'm really curious now to see the success rate on this - 2/2 is a great start.  If it's high and the roots grow out quickly, that's awesome.
