Got to pick a few Ecuador Red Rocotos this morning:

Had to include a pic of these gnarly-as- he
dried BJ Brown pods. Stuff of nightmares:

I thought Rocopica were supposed to be red, and
that it was just taking forever for the pods to ripen.

But today, I noticed that the dark pods are actually
brown:

The seeds in the wrinkled pod are dark like a Rocoto.
The other pod has lighter seeds, but the red inside looks
like a typical chocolate variety. Taste not a real winner, but
perhaps dried they would be a good addition to a chocolate
blend powder.

Pods are juicy!

Hey, Paul.  Those rocoto ecuador pods look great.  I grew seeds from the stettoman's ecuador last season and was truly impressed with both the plants and pods.

Are those brown rocopica pods from seeds I sent you?  If so, you've identified for me what exactly it is - USDA Cardenasii x Rocoto XL Brown F2 w/ F3 seeds inside.  I received the seeds as the cardenasii and I know the plant was grown near an XL Brown (among other rocotos) - I'd been hoping it was the XLB it had crossed with :)

It's a joy to see all the pods you continue to pull in.  Looks like your page-topper duck is going to be liking the local weather again soon, though ;)

One of the more productive Rocotos I have grown.
Pods have a pretty good kick for a Rocoto.

Yes, these are from your seeds, CD.

It’s good to know the story behind the Rocopica.
I was surprised at the brown color. Rounds out the
wild pod collection quite nicely.

The season seems to be finishing on a positive note
for the PNW, eh? There will still be a number of unripe
pods on some of the plants, but all-in-all, most have
been productive. I’d rather not have the June Suck And
Fall Weather Anxiety every year

Cleaned off the Trippaul Threat F8 plants. A number of pods
aren’t really all the way ripe for seed gathering, but for
culinary use they are fine:

Gathered a few pods today:

Fatalis, Trippaul Threat Peach and Yellow,
one Moruga UV Chocolate, one XL Brown Rocoto.

Pulled the last of the Yellow 7 pods, and some more
BJBrown. This is the most productive chocolate BJ
I have grown, and the only one to ripen up almost all
of its pods before frost time:

FInally got some ripe Sugar Rush Peach pods,
along with some more Aji Benito pods:

I've been enjoying the many pod pics you've been posting recently Paul. It is great to see what can be accomplished here in the PNW. I just need a larger place (and better sun exposure) to be able to have a decent grow outdoors.... Someday it will happen!

So what were your thoughts on the Big Brown Bhuts? I did not grow them this year because i wanted to try some other stuff. The brown "Reapers" i grew instead cranked out pods.

I have never tried or grown such a large wickedly hot pepper as them brown bhuts. Ive tasted hotter but not in a monster sized pod. They were easily hotter than the standard bhuts i grew before but i did not care for the flavor nearly as much. I much prefer them dried over fresh.

I hope you find that larger space, HM!

I appreciate the visit, my friend, just remember
I never show the ugly stuff

The BJ Brown is a super productive plant. It is
the first I've grown to actually ripen up all its pods.
Haven't tasted one, yet. My main purpose is for a
nice chocolate powder. I usually mix whatever
pods I have. This year the BJ, and a Moruga UV
Chocolate.

In May of 2019, Dragon49 sent me a seedling,
which has turned out to be the slowest growing
plant I have ever grown. I planted the seedling on
May 7th, and here we are 17 months, 13 days later
with four pods which are not ripe yet:

Ending the page with a little non-pepper color.
Kanjiro winter-blooming camellia, first Fall flower.
It will bloom until next March or April:
