paypal

i would use paypal ever yet i see that seems to be all people accept for payment.

a question, if i sent cash (i'll trust you) or a personal check (you can wait for it to clear) or a bank check would they be acceptable vs paypal?

just curious cuz if i wanted to buy peppers it won't be via paypal... so maybe i can't unless someone would accept cash (who wouldn't) or wait on a personal check or a bank check (as good as cash really).

Tom,

The obvious point is that you won't be buying fresh pods with cash/check, only dried stuff, due to the transit/clearance time for mailed payments.

Otherwise there's no reason a person shouldn't accept a USPS money order or certified bank check. Personal checks are more risky, they can show in your account quickly but they're actually not officially cleared for quite a while after deposit. I've had one 'go bad' on me after I thought it was cleared.

Get a PP account if you can, everyone is happier under the umbrella of the protection they provide.

Signing up for paypal is easy only takes a few minutes. Peppers don't have a long shelf life and waiting for checks to clear does not work. Paypal is instant and pepper are in the mail the same day in some cases. Who uses cash anymore? We just want the freshest peppers possible to reach the customer. When I shop online I never have to give out any personal info just one click to paypal does it all. :)

Tom, this is one of those hurdles you are just going to have to get over. Paypal has pretty well become an online merchants prefered tool to use for payment.

i did it to purchase from pepperlover last year and everything went fine without any shenanigans. the only "lump in my throat" moment was when i recieved a message from a "Mohamad" saying my order was received and processed. through paypal, i was asked what credit card i wanted to use, i used Mastercard, always being suspicious about online purchasing, i knew that i could call Mastercard and just cancel any transaction that wasn't right.

just go to paypal's account set up site and do a few practise runs until you are ready to commit. once you do, in a month from now you will not think twice about the experience and wonder why you ever hesitated. i helped another member through the process, who had that same block about paypal, now the guy never leaves home to shop and makes more purchases than my wife on a shopping spree through Costco!

good luck and hope you get your fresh peppers soon.

What's wrong with Mohamad? it's a name, just like any other name.

I thought the same thing for a second as well.. In my case I was expecting it to say Judy or peperlover.com Weather it said Mohammad or John Smith I would have felt the same way.

alot of people actually choose to not use paypal for ideological reasons, i have heard they sometimes, or at one point in time would not clear firearms and medical marijuana purchases. thats enough to get alot of people pissed at paypall.
im sure theres other reasons im not aware of as well.

edit: typo city

PayPal is in business to make money so they're going to do the best job they can. I've used it hundreds of time and prefer it when people purchase my spiders. I've even had them call me when a very large withdrawal was made just to make sure it was legit. Got to dig that.

As a buyer like Cappy said couple of clicks and your purchase is done without having to provide any personal info.

As a seller I know when PayPal says the money is in my account the money is in my account.

What's not to like?

it's not a matter of it being hard or time consuming to use paypal. i have heard stories of paypal accounts that were either hacked or had some problem and it was a mess. from that point on i said never use paypal. whatever the problem was it was bad and that's my aversion to paypal. i use cash sometimes but i typically use a credit card for most everything.

You can pay with your credit card. they do work with PayPal.

the LAST thing in the world i'd do is give my credit card info to paypal!

yeah waiting for a check to clear takes time but i have a box of peppers someone sent to me around 9/28 maybe 9/26 cuz i waited a few days to eat the 1st one and that was on 10/2. they are still in the fridge, i have eaten 1/2 so far, and all are in good shape. my point is if a shipment was in the fridge it'd hold up for a week at least, closer to 2 weeks. a mailed envelope takes just a few days to get there anywhere in the lower 48.

i'm not going to buy any peppers as i don't need any but if i was i'd ask if sending cash was ok vs paypal. i mean who doesn't accept cash? i'd have to trust the seller but from what i gather the sellers here are well know to the community and would not rip anyone off or they'd never make a sale again. so from that perspective i'd feel safe sending cash.

paypal may have changed over time, i don't remember when i read about the problem but it struck me as a very serious one and that paypal was definitely best avoided.

I have used paypal for years with ebay and other online merchants and I have NEVER had so much as hiccup from them... and if what you paid for is not what you got you can file a paypal dispute and possibly get your money back

from a merchant's point of view,

I don't have a lot of time to deal with addresses, credit cards, approvals, all the details that go along with an online purchase. And I don't have a lot of money to maintain my own shopping/business/purchasing software. There are no "customer service representatives"....just me, the owner, who still messes up orders....

For myself, a tiny one-person food business, who has a family, other businesses(electrical contracting business that actually makes money), soccer practices, invoicing, codes, permits, licensing, insurances for ( EVERYTHING!!!), [did I pay the mortgage yet?!?!???] paypal is a necessity. I receive an email about an order someone has placed, I go to paypal, print out the packing slip which has all the shipping information and the items ordered, I go pack it and ship it and the money is in my account.

I don't have to process credit cards or any other hassles. Paypal charges me a fee for every order that they process for me, but credit cards charge fees for every order they process also, so for me...the added benefits Paypal offers to the tiny-businesses like me, for now, it's the best choice for my small business.

I have a feeling many of the people who are selling pods, powders, plants, and products here on THP are "hobby businesses". They are not huge corporations. And as such, they may also be more accomodating to work with a person who would like to pay with a cashier's check or personal check.

To the original poster,
If you would like to order fresh pods, just make arrangements to pay for them ahead of time! There are many reputable people who you can pay ahead of time to, and many who will also ship and trust you to pay after receiving the pods.

If someone approached me about purchasing sauces with a personal check, I'd work with them.

For whatever horror stories you may have heard about people being ripped off by a paypal account, I can assure you the same story can be heard 10-fold by anyone who has a credit card or bank card. I personally had someone hack my bank account (more than 10 years ago) and charge subscriptions to online animated cartoon sex websites to my bank account.

(SERIOUSLY??? Watching Yu-Gi-Ho for ADULTS???)

To this day, I still have no sure answer of how they gained access to my bank account. It is a small, regional bank, not a multi-national conglomerate. And I NEVER used my bank cash card, only wrote checks.

Hope this helps to maybe encourage you to look at paypal and also maybe take the step to contact people/products you have an interest in directly. Please realize that Paypal is a huge convenience and security for small businesses who would likely be in a world-of-hurt dealing with orders/billing/invoices/security/fraudsresolutions without a service like Paypal.

Best, SL

The only problems I have heard of with paypal is when the person on the other end is dodgy and lies. If you are dealing with an established site it shouldn't be a problem, but if you are buying something expensive off ebay from someone with 0 feedback you're asking for trouble, whether you use paypal or something else.

well i havent had a paypal account in yrs
why? well if you read thru all the paypal "terms and conditions", paypal does not wait to hear both sides of a story,a clamed filed against you the money returns right to the person who paid you, until you "prove" the claim is false or you correct any issues, but by then the claiment can take the money out and paypal cant return it until they have access to funds on there accounts.which could be never.

another good one and this is why i dont have one, they for no reason can lock and hold your account along with funds for up to 180 days, no reasons needed as i was told by one rep, when this happened to me and my account was over 4yrs with them, with over 400 dealings.i used to buy and sell with everyone, until that one day i logged in and in nie red letters that my account was on hold.

it's not a hurdle you have to jump as some stated, they can send you a paypal invoice and you can pay with out setting up a account as i do.
but when i'm selling i only use google check out, there security measures are 100 times better then paypal,i may wait an additional 1-3 days to get funds tranfered to my account but its worth it and i have no head aches like i did with paypal, google checkout allows you to update as you process thru the order, and once your ready to ship you click the charge button and thats when you charge them not sooner not later

this is my experience with paypal everyone is different,
i advise look at your options and READ the terms and conditions no matter how long they are

Just to present a fair and balanced debate (think Fox News  ), here are a couple reasons NOT to use Paypal -

1 - They've recently introduced a policy, mostly for eBay users, whereby they place funds you receive from all transactions on hold for 30 days. Then after the 30 days has elapsed they release them so you can withdraw. This is complete bonkers and a real pain in the sphincter for smaller businesses who need the cash flow. Basically they tell you to ship the product but you can't have your money for a month. I have several PP accounts and one of my accounts was just hit with this limitation, even though it's almost 2 yrs old and has never had a chargeback filed.

2 - PayPal are one of several Merchant Account providers who closed the doors on WikiLeaks. Opinions are polarized on that, but they are a target for hackers looking to avenge Wikileaks. So whether you're a wikileaks sympathizer or not, you could still be involved if your account is compromised.

3 - PayPal always favor the customer over the merchant in any dispute. This is not unusual for Merchant account providers but PayPal go to the extreme with this policy. As a merchant, you'll need to plan for a higher percentage of unresolved chargebacks (resolved, but not in your favor) than you would with most other Merchant account providers. Plus, it takes longer to process a chargeback return than any other MAP I've used.

4 - Fees - Paypal is owned by eBay and if you trade through eBay you'll have cumulative fees which can add up to a significant amount. PayPal's fees are not the lowest in the business by any means. If you're only doing a few $$$ it isn't going to add up to much, but if you're processing bigger sales volume it makes a difference.

All that said, they're still a safe and effective way for most people to exchange cash for goods/services.

When I started my online business in 98, I processed around 98% of sales via a CardService Intl Merchant Account, and 2% by check. I now do around 75% through my Merchant account and 25% through PayPal. People have the choice, and they're choosing PP more and more as a way to shop. I think I've only had maybe 2 mail-in-checks in 2011 !!

Whatever. Get a PP account, your testicles will swell with pride.

I am on a limited budget. I use paypal and only order when I have the funds in the bank. Money goes from my bank to the person I bought from, no hassles, no problems. I have never had a problem with paypal. As far as the scams, never check anything from an emailed link..go directly to your paypal by www.paypal.com that will eliminate any scams from getting into your account. Paypal will NOT send you an email asking for information like that. Be skeptical. It's scary to have your info out on the web so use paypal for your pepper transactions. It's about the best way available right now.

interesting comments, thanks for your time to discuss this. overwhelmingly pp gets a heads up. maybe the problem was with ebay i don't remember and as i said whatever the situation was it sounded like (to me) that pp was something to avoid at all costs. maybe it was worse then (not sure how long ago this was) than now. anyway maybe my impression of pp is inaccurate.

Well I said they are good but I saw this today.

From that blog it seems that all is smooth sailing until there is a problem. If there is a problem, like computer/human error or miscommunication, then they clamp down and permanently label your account as dodgy. My exwife had someone not send an item and then dispute it and after that she wasn't able to use her account for ages. Getting it cleared up quickly looks like it is next to impossible. So you are innoncent until a rumour of guilty then you are blacklisted.
I suppose a company processing a huge number of transactions every day in the age of computer fraud has to have policies to deal with problems and can't easily sort everything out with a phone call. I still think they could do better.
I only ever buy small ticket items through paypal so I'm not that concerned if something were to go wrong and I'll keep using it.
