Pepper Plants Getting Devastated

Pam said:
Yup. Mechanically removing the aphids when they're that badly infested helps. It also washes the residues of any other sprays off before you apply another.

Yep I did all that with mine (plus what AJ said you'd do) but to be honest when they were that badly infested it was only really a good bug spray (the organic one) that cured the problem, it also seemed to stop them coming back. Saying that I didn't have chance to deal with the plants everyday.

Are these aphids? My plants are taking a real pounding. Bugs all over the leaves and it appears to be stopping new growth and most likely destroying everything. Sad.

I tried spraying a soap/water solution, but it did nothing. I will NEVER EVER bring in overwintered plants in my house again. Not worth it at all. :( They are not there now, but I think the damage was done. Or, I could've picked up contaminated potting soil at my local nursery. Either way, I'm screwed!

Chris

I had the same kind of Aphids (The Red Ones), and I had to cut my plants back, remove mulch, soak in hot water, inspect every single pot, then pour steaming hot water into the pots to kill anything in the soil.

Stopped them dead in their tracks... And I was really infested, some leaves you could not see leaf at all.

Well, there's your problem right there, you have a life. Serves you right if your peppers suffer!

I tried to piss off the aphids by taking all the plants under a sink and hitting the top and underside of the leaves full blast with my kitchen sink sprayer! lol. I hope they got hurt. :) I will continue to spray with safer insecticide spray every few days (including the soil surface) and see where that gets me.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help everyone. It's appreciated.

Hey Chris

Do you find many ants around your plants. I have had many problems with aphids and its all because of the ants the surround my garden. If you do have ants that is where you should be focusing. Since it is the ants the thrive off the aphids and transport them around.

I buy POUNDS of ladybugs every year just in case I get infested.

they are cheap and will not kill the plant or people .

if plants are inside I would make a poly tent and put them inside befor i would try soaps and other chemicals.

keep in mind aphids live in dirt overwinter so a clean grow area is key!!

I have also found that soap will work ok on smaller plants but when you get aphids and flowers on peppers and you dunk or spray soaps or other stuff you almost always lose those flowers!

I am STUNNED that none of you recommended diatom powder!

Leave it to the crazy hippie-chick. I dust the piss out of them with it. 100% organic non toxic, and every time the aphid moves it gets sliced up and then dehydrates.

6. For aphid control you can apply diatomaceous earth, a powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny sea creatures called diatoms.

Its advantage is that, unless it is inhaled, it is harmless to humans and pets while to soft-bodied insects it is razor sharp and tears their exterior casing.

Starts as the same product but the pool filter stuff is altered.

I get #50 of FOOD GRADE DE (diatomaceous Earth) for about $35 US !

Had GREAT success with it so far!

I use Diatomaceous Earth as soil for my peppers  Not pure, but mixed with 50% dirt. But for my bonsais it's 100% D.E.

Heya Chris,

I can't add more than these folks did...Neem and Safer soap sound like the way I would do it if I was you... I will feel bad for you though.. I know it stinks having problems when you pour so much time into it. I believe you will overcome this :)

These aphids are the most ruthless pests indoors I've ever dealt with. They are completely demolishing my pepper seedlings. I have 75+ plants in 2.5" square containers that are 1 month old and have no true leaves. What a waste of time.

i thought they were slow growers. They are C. Chinense. WRONG answer. I looked more closely and aphids are crawling on the stem and the stater leaves. They are sucking the new plants dry.

I have sprayed a garlic oil water mix, pepper spray mix, Safter insecticide soap spray, soap and water spray, etc. All useless. They came back 3x harder in a matter of days. These things can destroy a 100 seedlings in the snap of a finger. :(

I'm desperate. I ordered 1,500 ladybugs tonight. I'm hoping the damage isn't permanent, but it may well be. I'm not sure if the plants would start growing again and develop leaves if the ladybugs wipe out the aphids. Any thoughts?

I can't even imagine what caused this explosion of aphids. I really believe the potting soil may have been infested. Sadly, I have 5 bags of this soil unopened.

The thought of releasing hundreds of ladybugs into a basement kind of sickens me. My wife won't like it much. lol.

Hint to all of you: Keep your outdoor plants - OUTDOORS!!

Chris

Homemade Aphid Control - A Natural Way To Kill Aphids
Getting rid of aphids is no easy task. Large masses of them seem to appear overnight and without quick treatment, they can overwhelm and kill a plant. Using an organic, homemade aphid control is best for your plants, the environment and beneficial bugs in your garden. Let’s look at a few organic control of aphids.

A recipe for a home remedy to get rid of aphids
1 cup vegetable or white mineral oil
1 1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons dish soap or Murphy’s soap

Spray this homemade aphid control mixture on the aphids every few days until the aphids recede. This home remedy to get rid of aphids will suffocate the aphids.

Bring in predators as an organic control of aphids
Aphid predators are a natural way to kill aphids. These include lacewings, ladybugs and aphid predator (which is an actual bug called that). Introduce these beneficial bus to your garden as a natural way to kill aphids. Planting mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, clover and dandelions will also attract these insects to your garden.

Grow decoy plants for a homemade aphid control
Growing plants that are especially attractive to aphids can actually help with a serious aphid infestation. Plants like nasturtiums, asters, mums, cosmos, hollyhocks, larkspur, tuberous begonias, verbena, dahlias, and zinnias are very attractive to aphids and are especially good for organic control of aphids. Grow these plants away from the plants you wish to keep aphids off. They will act as a lure, keeping the aphids away from the plants you wish to keep aphid-free.

Spray the hose for getting rid of aphids
If you find an aphid infestation, you can spray the plant with you garden hose to knock the aphids off. Spray the plant every day until the plant is aphid free.

Combine these controls for a super homemade aphid control
While any of these methods will work for getting rid of aphids, combining them will increase their effectiveness as a natural way to kill aphids.

Those are exactly the same pests that I've had for months Chris and they just keep coming back no matter what I'm doing. Usually I only see the white or green coloured aphids, these things are doing more damage.

I'll repeat my question from another thread. Has anyone tried using a hoover to suck them off?

I had a problem in my kitchen a while back with small fruit flies. There was millions of the little critters (personally I blame my girlfriend for always leaving the lid off the food waste bin) and the only realy solution we managed to get to work was using a hoover on them. It's not easy and takes a while as you have to do it two or three times a day however it was extremely effective and after about 1 week there were no more fruit flies. It seemed somewhat cruel as it was a much more personal kill as you had to chase some of the flies down individually but it was also somewhat rewarding.

I am aware that the strength of the suck ofthe hover may damage the plants and have not tried it myself but maybe one of the small handheld mini hovers (dust-busters) may work? Just wondering if anyone had tried it with aphids.
