Should have the grow area set up and seeds germing by February 15th

Congrats on your first hook of the season!

Thanks stc!

Alright I have finally had time to get over to my buddies and I have an update on our grow status.

We have hooks all over the place! Very cool. The other day my buddy told me that the Jiffy's temperature was at 69.0 degrees. (we have a heater up there with them at 90 degrees) I told him we need to get that soil temperature up before we will get any germination going. So he moved the heater and told me tonight when I went over there to play cards, that the soil raised 2 degrees. Ok well that was cool. I didn't get a chance to go up and look at the cells. When we were done I went up and looked just to look and there were sprouts all over the place in the Non-superhot greenhouse. The superhot green house had one sprout I believe...it was a Jonah! woot woot.

We are going to be making a seed heating mat tomorrow, which will raise the temp of the Jiffy to around 80-85 degrees. So I am sure in the next few days we should have hooks all over the place. Since both trays has at least one hook or more I took off the greenhouse tops and now they are under the lights. (26w 2750 lumen 6500k T5s) we have a total of 6 light fixtures 2 bulbs a piece. so we are looking at roughly 32,500 lumens over 24sqft....which only brings us to about 1355 lumens per square foot. I am hoping this will get us by until plant out. I know it's not even half of what you should have to grow full plants but I'm only growing them for about two months.....we will see. Might have to try and add some High Output CFL's in the mix.

I am going to be going crazy not being able to get to my buddies house every day to look at and take after the chilis. I will have to put the trust in my buddies hands to do a good job when I can't be there. I do have one plant that I am growing at my house. It is a Tri-Color Variegata. It sprouted on the 14th of Feb. It is in unstable conditions though. I don't know how well it will do. I fixed the ghetto setup I have going on here to try and stabilize temperatures and light conditions......let the fun begin! It hasn't grown much in the past few days but it has turned a dark purple. Looks healthy though. It is under a 850 lumen 6500k bulb with some light coming from a lizard heat basking lamp as well. (I really need to get to the store and get what I need for these things) I am so unprepared this year.

Well that is the story....and I'm sticking to it. Here are my pics for your enjoyment. I'll have some more tomorrow of our setup, better pictures and also a concrete list of what has sprouted to what has been planted.

this is the little TCV....cozy in it's little spot....I think...he could be saying F**K YOU. lol

Man o man do I love seeing those little seeds pop....then I get scared about taking care of them....bahahahaha. Joys of being a chilihead. So I have some more pictures for you (If there's anyone out there) of my seedlings and a seed heating tray I am building. These sprouts are two days old, and more are popping every day.

I didn't have the straps to tie down the rope lights so I will have to update those later.

The wire has 8.25 watts per 1.5 ft I will finalize it tonight and fill you in and have more pics. If its a failure I will treat it like the watergate cover up....or roswell NM...

Well, you've lost your ghetto status pulling out a tape measure and framing square. You might as well upgrade that lonely purple beast seedling by moving it into an actual cell at this point. Using your best surgical skills, get a couple of t-spoons and move him and his entire 1-inch household enmasse. Consider it an urban renewal kind of thing. He's maxxing on light or heat or maybe drugs in that location.

Lol yeah, it was lonely until I noticed his brother pop up from the dead! I was shocked. I did not expect that at all. I do believe it is a problem though. I doubt either of them will make it in that section 8 housing. Ive been so busy and have had no time to make it habitable. Maybe I will move them on up to the east side....where they can get a piece of the pie...updates tonight.

Interesting seed-heater you're working on there. How's it work? Using rope lights underneath for heat, or did I completely misunderstand what you're trying to do?

I love the loft grow space by the way. It's a pepper penthouse!

I love the loft grow space by the way. It's a pepper penthouse!

The seed heating plate/tray/mat whatever you want to call it is 30" long by 18" wide. It has 12ft of 1/2 inch rope light. Each foot and a half of rope light is equivalent to 8.25watts, for a total of 66watts. Seed heating mats are usually 18-20w and the mat is usually 8 and 1/2 inches wide by 20 inches long. (I made mine big....lol go big or go home)

I am testing it out tonight without anything covering the heating plate to see how much heat transfer is going on. The ribs of wood that the rope snakes through is 5/8 inches tall. So the rope doesn't touch the seed trays and also the actual cells are raised up from the container they sit in, so there is a little more give room there. I am going to see if I need to install a barrier between the plate and the seeds to dumb down the heat transfer. My buddy is going to check it in the morning and see if any adjustments need to be made. I will update as soon as I know.

So here is the rest of the update. I have a total of 26/144 sprouts. Most of them being NON-superhots. The seeds where planted in Jiffy on February 12 with an average soil temperature of 68-70 degrees. We built the heat plate so we can raise this to hopefully 80-85 degrees. In which I think we will have an explosion of sprouts. The supers are just not hot enough to come up right now. I am still stoked about what has popped in the 8 days they have been germing.

Here are some pics of the seed heating plate and some of the seedlings. Also I went to the thrift store and bought a small sylvania fan for 5.25$ and a humidifier with a built in humidistat for 3.75$ You can see the fan up in the loft area. (I also found a guy on Craigslist selling his compost pile for 10 dollars a wheel barrel full. He said he would make a better deal if someone takes the whole pile, which I don't know how much that is but I am going to email him and see if I can't jump on this offer. See what his price for taking all of it is and what he has been putting in it)

Next I am looking into getting some mylar to finish it all off.
IMG_0675.jpg

Thanks for looking guys, any questions feel free to ask. Things are on the up and up so far.

hahahaha...love it! Update us on how your temps hold! If you need to distribute the heat better you could add a piece of thin metal under the trays. Looks like you did a good job lining it up with every other row to make sure every cell gets some heat though...should work! Keep us posted!

If nothing else, it looks pretty :)
I've heard the white habaneros can be hard to germinate sometimes, but they seem to have jumped out pretty good for you thus far.
The set up looks great. It's gotta be killing you though to have it at your buddy's house.
I'm enjoying reading through your stuff - nice work!

Yes, having it at my buddies house gets to me sometimes...but if it wasn't there, it wouldn't be happening, lol. So I just keep that in the back of my mind. Also it makes to time go by quicker and I don't have to check them every hour....bahaha. Too much love will smother em' ;-)

Ok so the home made heat plate worked great! The soil temp is sitting at 81 degrees F. (28C) Its perfect little nest for the rest of our seeds to start poppin' like popcorn.

Now I have to start thinking about what kind of soil mixture I am going to use and what size pots for the first transplant. I want to be ready and not scrambling last minute.

So I was talking to a guy who has his compost pile for sale..all organic. He said its mostly grass clippings and leaves with some ocassional table scraps such as egg shells, coffee and what not. (No dairy or meat) He has 20 wheel barrel loads, if I take them all he said he would do 20 a wheel barrel or else its 10 a wheel barrel. What do you guys think?? Good deal/bad deal?? Ive never bought anything like this before.

Well I have a few more things to get set up for the indoor part of the season and then its on to planning the outdoor part of the season. Will post more as it developes....thos is Ron Burgandy signing off......stay classy THP.

He has 20 wheel barrel loads, if I take them all he said he would do 20 a wheel barrel or else its 10 a wheel barrel.

That't a terrible deal! 20 if you take them all and 10 if you take half! Thinking that's reversed. Seriously though...you can buy bagged compost for about $20 a wheelbarrow...but $10 is a good deal if its good compost...You could always buy it and sell off what you don't use.

So things are going ok, I've been sick, so I haven't been able to get over and see the reel grow. My buddy said that we had a few casualties.....he said that a few seedlings shriveled up and died, but the same type of seedling next to it in the same cell is doing fine....lol IDK. I'll have to wait until I am better to go over and take a look at what is going on.

These are the seedlings from my home ghetto grow. The shorter one with bigger set of true leaves was the first to pop up on the 14th of FEB. the other one popped about a week later. Very interested to see where they will go from here. I'll try and get an update on the "Pepper Penthouse" tomorrow night.

I've decided to go with red solo cups for my plant ups and silver mylar wrapping paper for our reflection. It dries up quick in the shed, so I am going to put up our humidifier and see how it works out. Hope everyone elses grows are going well.

Ok, ok, ok, I'm trying to keep composure...lol I know I'm laughing but really this is quite a setback. Yet at the same time, it is quite the learning experience. What I am talking about are the 30+ seedlings that have withered and died out of 85 or so. It is no fault but my own. I believe it to be from lack of humidity and watering. Should I say, I didn't expect the water to evaporate from the soil so quickly. As well, reading through here I've taken many an idea...such as not to over water. To do this I followed the way that AJ had mentioned he watered, in a thread response where someone's plants were dying due to over watering. He said that he bottom waters his cells for 5 minutes and then empties the rest out...There is nothing wrong with this because it is what his set up requires. It works well for him. What I have to say about this experience, is that every growing setup is unique in it's own and needs to be handled in it's own special way. I did not know, nor did I adjust for it and this is what makes my 30+ seedlings croaking ok. I was trying to follow someone else's methods without paying attention to the variables that might be present.

My set up is outside in an unconditioned space. It sits up in a loft of a shed. I maintain the temperature with a space heater, controlled by a digital thermostat. The Jiffy mix is not only warmed by the heater (which is set at 85) but also warmed by the germination plate I made. This keeps the Jiffy mix at around 79-82 degrees. That is the variance I have found through out checking random cells. The problem is not the temp of the soil, nor is it the temp of the air. It is the fact that these two combinations, combined with the lack of watering and extremely low humidity levels, starved a good majority of my seedlings of life. I don't know why some did and others didn't but I can safely say that is the reason they shriveled up and died.

So I have lowered my heater to 82 degrees and added a humidifier to the equation. I am hoping this will balance out everything and allow the soil to retain it's moisture longer than it has. The dryness was just sucking the water right out of the air, like filling your mouth with a spoon full of cinnamon sucks the saliva right out of your mouth..lol

I'm hoping we are back on track and will have no more fatalities...I've decided to put together another tray of 36 cells, to replace the ones that have died off. My white Fatalii's are toast among a few others. I'm not even sure what has died and what hasn't germinated yet, so I can't update my germination rates lol....it's sad really lmfao. But I am in good spirits and am already moving forward. Not being able to get over there more than around once a week is going to have to change. My buddy works and has two little ones and a fiance to keep up with, so I don't expect him to be able to give them as much attention as they might need. (And they only need this much attention because we don't have our setup under control yet. It's new to us and we need to get the kinks ironed out.)

Here's some pics of the seedlings that are left. The chocolate habanero's I can already tell want to grow into beasts. They are the biggest seedlings of the pics. The Brain Strains are growing strong. I will name them below.

These are the brain strains. They look real good.

I'd also like to add that these seeds where put into the Jiffy starting mix on Feb. 12th...the first seedlings that popped where on Feb. 18th. So the oldest seedling is 9 days old and the youngest I would guess at 4 or 5 days old. lol I know it would be nice to know which ones were which but I don't get over there often enough to keep up with which ones popped when. I am trying my best to keep this log updated regularly and with the most info I can. I appreciate everyone that looks and comments.

Looks like you got it figured out now! man this is why im always reading the growlogs. because of the mistakes people make and the things they do right. Glad you got your figured out. Its making me think of a few things with my set up as well. Good luck with the new borns.

Thanks BeeHunter. I hope this solves our problem. If not, I'm going to keep working at it until it is right. Damned if I'm going to go down without a fight. These Chiles are going to grow to harvest if they like it or not! lol...well here is the new seed list that is going into my new 36 cell tray. I have them soaking, there will be six of each, two per cell.

Atomic Cobra
Super Scorps
Yellow Scotch Bonnet
Red Savina
PI438618
Paper Lantern Hybrid
Billy Boy Douglah Red
Red Jolokia
Ancient Sweet
Rooster Spur
Aji Yellow
Chocolate Habanero

No time to waste! These seeds need to get germing quick....tomorrow they will go in a new flat and we will see what happens.
