This is nearly 1:1....
Great pics ! I was really into photography in my late teens early 20's. Now my pics these days are just with my phone.

I have an old Pentax Super Programmer with 6 lenses just collecting dust. It was an automatic with fully manual settings.

The wife and I do wildlife rescue and rehab. Neither of us even knew that weasels
existed in this area until one of her clients found this one in her dog's mouth and
brought it in to her clinic. Unfortunately, it seems that the head trauma may be so
severe that we may have to put her to sleep.

thats a very cool and crisp pic.

Yes indeed

Pr0digal_son,

I suck at edinting but that's one damn clear pic for a cellular phone.

Hoping your good effort will be rewarded with a good recovery.

I spotted that flower on my garden, i don't know which kind of plant is, but sure it's beatiful. So i experimented focus stackig, i've found a nice free software, extremely easy to use, called CombineZP dedicated to that. 13 shots at f/4, real flowers together are within 2 inches.

I applaud your experiment with the software, and thanks for posting what you used, Essi. Looks good. I'll have to check it out.
When I macro with extension tubes my depth of field is so small, even at f/32, that focus stacking is the only way to get more of the subject in focus.

Thanks.
A nice thing of the program is that selecting "all methods" from drop down menù creates 6 files with each method. It's time and memory consuming (at least it uses muticore and hyperthreading, i saw memory usage 2-3gb, just to fill all 4gb system).
Here a try with another method:

No artifacts, the right leaf is in better focus but the previous is better in other ways... Curious thing, final size are 18mpx (i have a k5 that is 16).

For curiosity sake i installed demo version of Zerene stacker that googling a bit it's considered maybe the best in class (but it's not free):

Of course i've not checked options, that's all at default.
Maybe the overall image is the best.
But i seriously must learn some post processing stuff...

I am having issues with this very topic. Thanks for bringing this up.I haven't used any PP software yet but I have some questions about this.

How do you take multiple shots with different DOF? Is there a bracketing setting on your camera? I can see if it is a fixed object but what if it is a moving insect or a flower that may move in the breeze?

At f/32,how do you get enough light to take a properly exposed photo? I don't want to use high ISO. I like to use 100. I have taken some in full sun and it is still a bit difficult. My macro lens is only 40mm which compounds my issues. I want to buy some tubes but wasn't sure how it would affect my image quality. Would adding 30mm throw things off? They are basically just spacers and don't affect the glass correct?
At a safe distance it is OK.

If I want to get in tight I have issues. I bought a cheap macro flash ring and the images come out cheap also! My shots still come out like this...

In focus stacking, the only thing you are changing is the focus on the subject. ISO,Shutter, and F/stop are left alone.

Moving subjects are tough in macro, especially when you use extension tubes. They completely change the way your lens behaves with focus and depth of field. I do macro work in a studio setting with lights and a tripod, with up to 68mm (36mm+20mm+12mm) of extension on a 70-200mm zoom... no live subjects. At F/32 I have very long shutter times. For the kind of macro work you are showing, Prod, extension tubes are definitely not for you. A 30mm tube would throw your game off so bad you'd swear tubes are the stupidest things ever invented. You might be able to get away with hand-holding 12mm of tube, but I doubt it would be any fun, since everything outside of focus would be extraordinarily blurry, and the focus ring now changes focus by fractions of an inch rather than feet. Most of my focusing in studio is done with the zoom ring, or by moving the tripod closer or farther away from the subject. The focus ring is only for fine tuning. I can imagine what someone in the field would look like doing this dance... silly.

Yes, tubes are basically just spacers. They do not have glass elements like a tele-extender. They move the designed focal plane of the lens farther away from the sensor, and in doing so completely F-up how the lens behaves. Go to your local camera shop and try them out. You'll know right away what I mean.
To me, extension tubes are really only good in a controlled environment. The slightest breeze that moves your subject can move it out of focus and ruin your intended picture.

Thanks for the info. Small f stop would be easier in a studio. I have done some stuff indoors under halide lighting. My problem is getting light on my subject when the glass is only an inch away. I bought the ring flash hoping this would help and I could go f22 or 25. It just isn't working for me. Sometimes the subject is even inside the ring and can't be lit. Also having issues with the white balance using it. I will keep tinkering.

I understand the focus stacking now. It wouldn't work for me outdoors. I could set up some stuff inside though. That would be my best option I guess,I don't think getting a longer macro lens would even work.

Here is an example of my plight. I want everything to be in focus so I don't have to photograph each part. As you mentioned above, any adjustment at this distance is crazy. It makes it almost impossible to use a tripod. I am better off moving the camera around to achieve my focus.

I may be fighting a losing battle but I will keep trying.
