PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Uh oh Greg! Looks like I picked the perfect time to pop back in. You are definitely off to the races, and even though it would take a couple pages to post your entire grow list, how about some highlights! :)

Good luck, but as we saw last season...you probably wont need it!

Matt

Greg is an amazing grower. You should read his article... Used his van as a germ station!! That SB cross would be great. Let me know how it goes. Would love for try and grow them myself. Ya know me. I do t stop germing!! Anyways. Keep up the growing. You are an amazing grower and are a generous person.

Greg, you dirty dog....that's one badass setup. Late start!? Lol, I started Feb. 12 last season and ran out of room a month early! Can't wait to have some room like you've got...for now I will take notes and "borrow" some ideas from your shenanigans. (This glog is awesome btw) I love the binder style seed catolog (see there's me a borrow right der')

I started some seeds in nov. I'm having some issues with them...I think it's a nute prob. But that's a whole other story.

Excited to watch you work this year. Last year I jumped in kinda late. Maybe this year I'll make my way down in the spring if or when you have another plant soirée.

It's 2:46am and you ha to go make my mouth water with that delectable dish! Which reminds me, I need to make something tasty for the playoffs tomorrow.

Keep up the fantabulous work!

wow those light boxes are awesome
so how many light boxes do you have there?
4 x 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft with 20 fluro bulbs per shelf?
how many of those 60 bulb 16' long tables do you have?

Hey FanMan,
The main grow room has a total of 16 T8 four bulb 4ft close space fixtures. There's also 4 T5 twin bulb 8ft fixtures. Within a 2ft width I have 2 T8's with a T8 sandwiched between them......now I'm confused and hungry.................hah
I also have 3 400w mh units that will be fired up next month

The sub basement has 10 T8 6 bulb units.....I do have a couple of 600 hps, but I don't intend to fire those up
I only have one 16ft run. Any more and I'd have to incorporate some help from the family........

Best of luck to you with the 2013 season, Greg. Looks like your already off to a great start, it's always a pleasure to see someone as thoroughly as you explaining every step of his process. A inspiration for us (beginners) all!

Stefan,
your no beginner, I'm looking forward to following your glog this season.
Good luck with the grow....may the harvests be heavy!

I live there from 2008-2010, one of those winters was nightmarish. I remember there being snow on the ground from November to the end of February. I think there was a week or so where it didn't get above 0 f. No snow this year? That's incredible.

Ha.....I remember those times, my neighbors Christmas stuff stayed frozen in the ground. The day they finished removing and packing it up I was loading up the lawn spreader with fertilizer....true story.

We surpased a record dating back to the 1800's for no accumulating snow over an inch. That record has gone back to last March. Here in the city we've had only a dusting. I'm looking at the sunshine pouring through the skylites, one would think that is warm outdoors but its only around 10 degrees and dropping.

Uh oh Greg! Looks like I picked the perfect time to pop back in. You are definitely off to the races, and even though it would take a couple pages to post your entire grow list, how about some highlights! :)

Good luck, but as we saw last season...you probably wont need it!

Matt how ya been you motor scooter, I hope you're staying out of harm's way and keeping safe...

I miss reading your glog.....sometimes I page back to check out pictures of your start-up and the gnarly looking pod pictures from your garden
I hope you can find time to get back and "rock out your garden"
Thanks for the comments !

Hey KD,
The mag article was cool, I may get a chance for a different mag this July....can't wait !...yet can't talk about it either...
Thanks for checking out my grow info, if the cross turns out to be positive then I'll send you some seeds.....for your aerogarden...

I am a dirty ole dog....hah
Well what seemed to be a late start yesterday is a different start today. ( You'd think someone was playing "Reveille on the Bugle") The seedlings are standing at attention.............
I'll be happy not to see folks trying to cram 2 ft tall plants into the back seats of their cars.....ha
That's if I still have some plant sales.

Thanks for interesting replies...once again I enjoy reading what you write here and in other forums.
Theres no full proof way to grow indoors. Just don't over do it with the chemicals.

I'm hoping to rebuild a couple of small hoop frames and possibly get an early startout this year with some shade material.
We'll see how the midwest fares out with the spring weather..

Good luck with your glog and plantout

Greg

Looking awesome. Loved all of your setup.

Thanks Bodeen,Although your grow room looks professional....T/G Cedar ?

Looks like an incredible start! Looking forward to following this one.

Thanks man,
I appreciate checking out you west coast dudes and gals that have full grown plants up and running......thats allows an insentive for me to get off the couch and get busy...
Good luck with your season, I'll be checking in on your info also

About damn time! I've been waiting for this one! Awesome start so far down to the south!

Haha.........not to far down South.
.I drove my son up to Minneapolis 2 weeks ago for a job internship. I thought the same, it was dam cold way up North

I hope to keep this glog entertaining, there's some good ones running now, yours for one !
Good luck with the garden and the food photos..............."Brats and Peppers with Cheddar Toast Points ?"....maybe?

Amazing setup Greg, good luck for another great season!

Datil

Thanks Datil,
I hope the same for you...

Nice start and impressive look to the seed bank.

Thanks Brian,
Your Cumari are coming up and the Yellow Fatalii....basically overnite, all at once. The Nardos will hit the dirt later in Feb, as those and most of the Nu-Mex and Sweet pepper annuum types can sprout up like a weed...fast

Greg, man, really nice opening. Love the way the garden has evolved over the years to the majestic grow space it is today.

Great start bro.

Greg, seriously a grand start off mon!!! I am looking forward to following your 2013 glog as I enjoyed reading your 2012 one, but sorry not going back to 1986 ;) I have a feeling that you will outdo last year’s glog as I believe you are honing your skills. While last year was a great glog IMHO, I feel that you are shooting to surpass it and I’m sure you will!

I dig your starting post, very nice tie-ins/tie-backs, followed by great grow room details and seed catalogs, wow … but did you have to post food so early in the glog, now I’m running off to cook something hehe. Dam you guys and your smexy food pictures & recipes :D

I’ll be watching and lovin every minute of it. PS hope you enjoy the Jamaican Habs as much as we do down here …

+1 Jamie but I guess it takes a master to know a master. I was soooo looking forward to this and like many others I too went back through your entire glog from last year. That is an excellent set up. When I grow up I want one just like that. Aahhaaaaa. I will be following intently of course. Best of growing to you.

:surprised: 128 fluro tubes, geez i do NOT want to pay that power bill, that would send my broke with Aussie power prices and that doesn't even include the MH/HPS.

Though it does look like a fantastic way to start a LOT of plants, the plants must really like it if there actually getting pods in your grow boxes.
