PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Greg, love the updates! Great pictures as usual, you must be pushing that Canon PowerShot (SD880 IS) to it’s limits, hehe. It’s certainly an an excellent point-and-shoot camera and the photographer is no slouch either ;)
  • Super nice purple Bhut Jolokia pic and if you have a squadron of the Maui Purples, I’m wondering if that means you have a fleet of the purple Bhuts :D
  • Hope dem flag-tag ties work out, would hate to see some kid try to yank it off :/
  • Every ting is looking really lush and healthy, the Pequin, Zimbawie Bird, Fatalii, Scotch Bonnets, etc. but the Guatemalen Rocoto is just so dam smexy … very nice mon :)
  • Very nice shot also on the "scarecrow" pod (Y. Scotch Bonnet x Y. Brain Strain)
You had to tempt me with the rum picture and while you did, I did not drool like I did with those wicked looking appetizers … super nice mon! I’ll most likely give your Egg roll wrapper cups a try one day, thanks for planting the seed :)

Keep up dat jamming grow!!!

Those would make for great empanadas!

Chicago style!

Ah...empanadas, I can make a meal out of them...only cause I can't stop eating them Ground beef, hard boiled eggs and raisens are the key in mine.

that looks delicious.

Thanks man, the 7 Pot puree is the killer.... If I throw these out for my pepper eating friends I'll play "Roulette" with them. Adding the puree to some and BBQ to the rest.....the eliment of surprise!

Nice update G, I will be looking into those star inserts. Have you ever sown straight into those? My plan(maybe) is to plant up once and plant out in June from 5 1/4" kords. Those star cells could be the ticket! I have a feeling I am going to do more planning than picking if I hold off any longer!

Haha, .........I just looked at the camera, that's what it is. A pocket camera......hehe Nothing like the Blads or the RB's I use to have on the tripods.
Thanks Ramon, You didn't miss a thing..........hmm.....that sounds familar...

If three makes a Fleet of Bhuts, then I have one. Only had 3 seeds and they all popped...

The flag ties should do the trick. Oddly enough my sisters and I have been involved in plant sales through the years. Really not much Hot Peppa, but sweet peppers, tomatoes and other veg, plants but alot of perennials...The plant tags stuck in the soil have always brough ocaused problems at sales. I group the plants together....after all these years I can pretty much identify the tomato plants, and I grow around 30 varieties. But the pepper plants can be confusing...unless thay have pods on....

Thanks once again for your input and clever wording.........time for an RC.........rum and coke....no lime

 Awesome job on doing the transplant and bringing in the foodie pics... Hes on :onfire:

Thanks man by next week I hope to be past the "heres how" and show more of the "what's happening" ...I'm just waiting for the seedlings to gear up.
Kind words are always appreciated.............. ;)

Plants are looking awesome, nice interesting mix too... the food *damn* got to clean the drool off my keyboard "again"... bottle of Rum looking too full :)

Hey J,
I have in the past but I would not recommend it. The seedlings may become leggy as the roots initially travel down the seedling wants to travel up. The problem is if they become leggy its difficult to transplant them if the well has mostly medium by a weak root system. I prefer to start out in the typical 72 cert. Once the rootball has formed and the 3rd set of leaves appears then its ready to move. I tried the 36 cell insert this year but its too flimsy...a throw away.. The seedlings for those will get moved right into the 5.25"'s.
I beleive there are numerous configurations to the star-cells and depths.

Thanks Lourens.......I have a few bottles hanging around ...a 15yr old El Dorado Demerera....for a night cap....as we speak..........

Thanks Greg,I will do what I did last year. I agree it is hard to transplant with weak root system, and controlling the moisture is hard that way also. I like the idea of the star cell and will look into a couple different sizes.

Yup, yup...I FOUND IT!! :woohoo:  !!! Seems as nightly news is reporting a nation wide shortage of 3 ring binders and card sleeves...Business is booming in the high bay light fixture world, and the most googled images are of the Zimbabwe Bird chile. You really know how to make an impact and an entrance Greg! One of your 07 Jamaican Scotch Bonnet seeds is up and running in Socal buddy! Thanks for your generosity! Now I got to head up to the top of the page to click that follow tab!

Great weekend update, awesome idea on the plant tags. Where did you snag those from? I do not sells plants but we had so many bad storms last year that nothing I tried stayed with the plants. If not for creating a map and knowing what I planted, I would have been 100% SOL.

It's the way to go if you bottom water...one large hole at the bottom no slits like the cheapo...

Nice update!
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it

The "Masked Man" writes again...Thanks Shane, I hope the plants grow up to be fine examples worthy of a photo...

Salivation gland overload

What he say....what he say..........

The tags were an idea from one of my pepper friends. We use similar at work to label cable runs. It beats writing on tape. They're worth the few bucks and come in different lengths and tag sizes you could probably find them online at a decent price. Electrical supply stores carry them. Track down the "rain or shine" marker, the ink won't bleed off like a typical indoor permanent marker.

Greg, really great update and those plants are lookin locked, cocked and ready to rock. Seems i never can come in here and not leave without having learned something new. You sir are not only a great inspiration to strive for a good grow but also a source of knowledge to help get there as are others on here. The hardest part is taking it all in and then keeping fron going out and doing everything at the same time :)

have a great week,
Bill

Thanks Bill,
Reading that made my night.....I too learn from reading other glogs...the do's and the don'ts.
After a couple of hrs in the groiw room i needed to get out...so I'm here for a bit checking things out.thanks for the kind words.
I hope your start up is rocket propelled and the seedlings throttle up to bigger and better lands...

Greg

Do you happen to have the brand and part number? The ones I found online leave a little to be desired.

Thanks
Chris

I'll check and send you a pm.

As usual a great update. Thanks Greg.

Thanks Patrick,
I found some seeds you sent me a year or two back...."Madballz"..somehow I missed planting them last year but I have a few seedlings popping up.
I assume it's pretty hot.

Wow Greg! I don't know if a glog update could get any more awesome than what you posted over the weekend. Your plants are spectacular and likewise are your cooking skills!
