Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

IMG_5253.jpg

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Friggin' awesome update, man. Those things are going to be monsters come plant-out time. I'm betting on pods by then. That many plants is going to be a huge grow. Nice!

Very nice update, plants are looking awesome and that is a great looking meal. I remember the first time someone saw me grill a tuna loin to make tuna salad they cringed, then they tried it. Looking forward to your updates in 2013 and best of luck!

Greg was up early this morning eh! Plants are looking awesome. Are you running all T8's besides the other room with the HID's?

All T8's but in the room With the MH 400's I also have 4 8ft twin bulb T5 fixtures that I really haven't needed to powder up yet. Earlier in the glog I explain about them. The 400w's are powdered up with 8 Scotch Bonnets under them and a couple of OW's. The 3 lights are on overlapping 12 hr cycles. The T8's do the trick, I can keep the plants close to the bulbs........Now its a waiting game, hopefully the plants can start to get hardened out by the 1st of May............dem larger pots get heavy indoors!

Fresh tuna fish salad is delicious, had it once. Your plants are looking good and getting big. I'm
starting some of the seeds I got from you in 2011. The congo trinidad is my favorite one. Large
pepper, glossy and beautiful (at least to me). I'm also trying to germinate some cumari pollux that
I received in 2011 from one of Chris's sase offers. Didn't get around to it last year. I see your growing
one too.

Hi Linda,
Thanks, nice hearing from ya. I remember sending the seeds. The Congo is a special pepper when it comes to sauce making. It doesn't have the biting flavor of the Orange Habs or similar. This year I'm growing some authentic Jamaican Reds from Ramon (WalkGood). I'm interested on trying those in a sauce. I'm hoping on keeping aroung 16 plants of that variety.
This is the 1st year for me with the Cumari Pollux.........maybe a special powder with all the wilds this year.....that is if I can get them all to sprout!
Good luck with your grow...

Greg

[sup]OMFG......u guys feed your plants steriod......WOW... just wow.....damn lights..... Wow.. off to work for 16hrs...cant wait to see how theyll look in march..probably will be podding up by then...[/sup]

Thanks DeNNIZ..........now my eyes hurt.............. ............ha..........I haven't been feeding too much of anything. ..so far. A little Kelp in the bottom watering and some Fish Emulsion as a foliar feed. Soon the Epsom Salts in the misting bottles and the Osmocote or similar grandules in the potting up medium.
How's the West coast grow going?

That Guatemalan Rocoto reminds me of a tarantula! Everything's looking right as rain (Chicago pun intended)

That tuna looks awesome. Love how thick the bread is....hmmm just might have to try that one out bradda. Thanks for the recipe!

Looking amazing as expected. Cool purp bhut x viper shot. It's neat to see the progression of color right next to each other.
Those star inserts are sweet. Good depth to them.

Thanks,
Brandon (Big Cedar) sent me some cool varieties and after looking at his pod photos from the end of last season I can't wait to get these plants going.
The star inserts are nice, deep and narrow. They are perfect for the prior pot up to 5" or gal size containers.

Wow!

Awesome.

Cool!
Thanks for checking this out...

Thanks,
I hope to get an early harvest by July...........some of the Habs and Bonnets sooner.
What I can't fit on my property will get planted elswhere. Looking forward to getting some cool pepper photos.

Thanks Chris,
Yellowfin on the grill or in the cast iron rocks! Rare for me..........I occassionally buy the Italian Genovese with the olive oil in the can. That works in casserole dishes or on crackers with a cold one...
Good luck with your grow and the pepper harvesting...

3 " plants with 5 sets of true leaves... *yawn* Picture perfect dishes..zzzzzzzz Show us a bad one! Some spilled
Ron zacapa XO maybe. Nice new starts,so much for your wife getting some yard space back huh? :liar: Have a good weekend Greg.

The tuna and bakery bread was the bomb. If you can "catch" the Albacore somewhere try it. There's a huge difference since no water has to be squeezed out of the fish...like the can stuff..............the mix was nice and moist, not wet

A lot of great photography, very nice.

Love the deep coloring in this pic. I'm curious to see how they turn out...

Thanks Charles,
I'm curious also. I hope the Viper end of the cross brings in the heat!

I almost forgot about the tuna loin. I too have done this with albacore I caught myself offshore. For times when I didn't want a tuna steak, or seared tuna, it makes the best tuna salad ever! Yours looked fantastic!

Haha..........That's part of the game plan. Keep the plants small and bushy. (feet on the brake and gas pedals)
I'm holding back on starting the annuums for another week.. As you know they are fast growers.....I just may bombard them with long light cycles and air movement to keep them short and stocky. I'll be hardening off the Tomatoes late April in the Hoop frames and the peppers around May 1st.
We had a great Spring last year but have had frost in May in the past. I'm not anxious when it comes to planting out.
I did promise my wife more yard space back........but I will use up a bit more side yardage and easement area with pots. Its a win-win for both of us.
Enjoy whats left of the weekend....might have to catch up on some recorded shows today....
Oh.........no spilled Rum...........just poured into a rock glass..........no ice

Thanks , being able to have your "Fresh Catch of the Day" the same day is awesome!
We have some good fish markets here that sell to the resturants. One in particular I shop at often, the owners and managers are chiliheads also.
I'm due to give them a list of plants that I'm growing. Fair trade fish for plants?.........maybe some Hawaiian Ono or Opah.....yum!

Greg, love the update, great pics and I see you don’t need no pepper god, you’re doing great on your own. You make dem baby Ramon JA Habs look great, hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Keep in mind they are all from the original seeds from Port Antonio but I do get different shaped pods and sizes from the 3 plants, thus how I labeled them.

Wow when I first saw the tuna loin, I was thinking sushi or seared tuna with sesame seeds both favorites we try to make a few times a year. I had forgotten about making home made tuna salad, it’s probably been over 15 years since I’ve done that with fresh tuna. That said, mines nothing like the greatness you put together, killer "Tuna Salad" sandwich you make brethren! Keep jamming to ya own beat mon ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ it works superbly :)

Awesome Greg. Just wondering cause I just picked up a 6 bulb t8 yesterday. Got to get her glowing tonight.

Great....you can keep the tops of the plants within an inch of the bulbs, the ballasts run cooler than the T5 HO.
What bulb temp are you using..mine are all 6500k.

Perfect timing....I'm suppose to be checking out vacation spots for this year on Trip Advisor but I decided to stop in hear first.
Seared Yellowfin with sesame seeds is great......no seeds no problem, mon..........blackened with jerk rub would hit the spot also.

That's why I'm hoping to keep about 16 or so of the best Jamaican Red plants. The # 1 pods look the largest but I'm game to grow all out.

I was in the grow room earlier checking if any MoA's popped ...no signs yet......half hr later one sprung out of nowhere. 1 of 6 . I bet they'll all be up by next weekends update. Thanks for the encouraging thoughts...

I’ll agree on the blackened with jerk rub too but the fresher the better for sushi mon! Congrats on the first MoA pop, I’m sure they’ll all pop with your mad skills, they did for me but still have 2 3 ladies wearing hats, hehe … take care and keep dem plant tunes blasting, they seem to love the reggae, that said mine have moved onto Soca and Ska ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫

Plants are looking stupendous Greg. Always nice to see how the pros do it.

I am puzzled by the photos of food in a glog though.

I am puzzled by the photos of food in a glog though.

Thanks Patrick, just another hobby I'm trying to perfect.........no pro about it.

Now I'm puzzled, I use to throw food shots over in the cooking section. But its easier to incorpoate them in my glog.
Others do,and besides everything has spice, the dishes aren't too shabby and when my garden gets cooking I'll use stuff from the garden.

I see your point though......as long as theres no rules on it ...well I figure there's about 34 more weekends until the end of my season so , hopefully 34 more spicey food shots............... :liar: ............ha, but probably not.
I'm hoping to get more plant photo's but not much is happening at this point. Just a couple hundred small seedlings.
Summers coming and the camera will be clicking. I hope to have a variety of pod and plant shots to keep this glog interesting.
Thanks for the comments and the heads up on the food topic.

Congrats on the first MoA!

We all love the food pics! keep 'em coming!

Thanks Steve,
I was surprised to see the hook after not seeing anything a half hour prior with a magnifier.

Food foto's will continue.....

Great little set up you got there, I just wish I could afford all the lights you have there. and of course the room to grow all the peppers that you have, I'd be in hog heaven. I'm not a fan of peat moss and would far rather use ground coconut shell pellets over peat moss, but have had to use it in the past when wally world didn't carry the ground up coconut shell in the bag, let alone made into pellets.
Looks like a nice little neighborhood you live in, my memories of Chicago are not as nice.
We're going through a climate warm up here and though its been cold, only the upper northern part of Missouri has gotten any snow to speak of, the rest of us has had diddley squat and we may go into a extreme drought condition before spring comes.
Looks like you have quite a few nice varieties in peppers, I don't have the room for all the peppers I would like this year.
I'm doing the biggest pepper plant contest, so that will take up room that I could put three plants in, so I had to cut out a variety that would have been grown in place of the contest pepper plants. This year I'm just growing 5 varieties with just four to six plants for each variety depending on how many of my seeds will germinate most of them come from a trade, but some I know will pop up, they are mostly hybrids of some super hots that I got and some crosses that I have.
Any way nice work there and I hope you have a great season, so we all can enjoy the photo's that you will be posting.

I ended buying 4 6500k and 2 5000k. Thought I'd throw in a little different spectrum, don't know if it will do anything. Yea Menards has em for $80. Was looking for another T5 but nearly impossible to find except online and at the hydro shops. I think I'll like it a little better than the T5's I have because you can keep em sooooo close.

wildseed57,Thanks for stopping in, good luck with the largest pepper plant grow. It sounds like you're sacrificing space for the grow. I wish you well on the progress and I hope the variety is something that brings heat to the table. Our climate is changing here, very little snow, none at the time. I can see an early Spring once again. At least the Zone you live in permits an earlier plantout and a longer planting season than here in Chicago. That should bring in a few good harvests.Have fun with the 2013 grow...

Good choice on the bulbs. The T8's have done the trick for me. I only use them to get the plants up and going for the plantout. Current draw is less with the T8's , than the T5's.When running numerous fixtures it is a savings on the electric bills. Keep your babies close to the bulbs and you'll end up with dense foliage......and who doesn't like that !How's the MoA's..........still MiA ? or have they sprouted ? 2 of 6 so far with mine...
