PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Hey Greg! It would be a beautiful day to harden some plants off outside eh? Unbelievable weather!
It was a foggy site driving by the cemetaries this morning. It's 60 something outside.

Yeah, I just heard that its going to hit 60 today in Chicago, perfect time to start hardning them babies off there Brah ;)
Ha, that would be nice, the closest they'll get to outside is the inside window.

Wow Greg! I don't know if a glog update could get any more awesome than what you posted over the weekend. Your plants are spectacular and likewise are your cooking skills!
Thanks,Things are starting to perk up in the grow room....and on the stove. More updates this weekend.

I just want to give a shout out to Brandon (Big Cedar) for dropping a "Payload" of seeds on me...that was the Bomb !

I can't thank you enough for the stuff. More plants means more photos...
That's where this glog is heading.

Plants are really looking nice man. We should be planting out at about the same time, but your plants will be way ahead of mine lol. Love the purple.

Sorry if this question's been asked before. Do you find the seeds germinate better with the heating pad and lights.
Normally I just put them on my cheap jiffy heat mats, and then under lights when they germinate.

Thanks Jeff, Once outdoors anything purple will put a blackslash into all the green that going on.

Both will get the job done faster...Lights only will also flip the switch on the seeds. I do both but also prior to placing the seeds into the starter mix I do a 1 hr soak in Hydrogen Peroxide, then a 4 hr soak in a germinating solution (Potassium Nitrate). My germ rates are in the 90's

Is that 100% hydrogen peroxide or is it diluted.

Thanks, I happen to have both HP and a gallon of distilled water handy at home. Don't have potassium nitrate. Maybe home depot
has some.

The HP is considered 10% . I pour about 16 oz out of a gallon of distilled water and replace it with a 16 oz bottle of HP. Using it straight would be too concentrated.
Non related to seed germination but pest control:
Greg, how strong can you go max for spaying without damage? I've only ever used up to 3oz per gallon without rinsing and no damage to leaves or plants.

Don't Know if the Dep has any.......it's also used to accelerate and decompose tree stumps (stump remover). Another term is Salt Petre (Peter)
Or as we in the garden circles refer it to ... "niter". . I've used it sucessfully to start-up the Hawaiian Ty, Birds of Paradise and a few forms of Hawaiian Ginger. Although not pepper related items, the seed husk, shell or "pipe" of these tropicals can be hard and unpenetratable when older and dryed out. The Salt Peter , as used to break down wood fibers (also softens the hull of a pepper seed), especially older ones. It's safe if used correctly but keep it away from the kids and pets. Like any other chemical.....it can be hazzardess...

Ramon....my Rum Drinking friend.....hah
I've never used Hydrogen Peroxide as a defense against pests. In highly diluted amounts I would imagine it wouldn't burn the foliage or the buds. I can't really give you a definitive answer to that. I have used rubbing alcohol in the past to rub off eggs or visible pests on the plants either with a Q-Tip or latex gloves.......that's not an organic method. But I know many Mastergardeners and alot of them also do the same.......and I ain't pointing fingers at those ( Illini's) who may be reading this...

Weekend Update!...

IMG_5559.jpg

Here's a mixed tray of c.chinense in 5 1/4" containers.

IMG_5566.jpg

A Yellow Perrins (Manzano) this one has a couple of "hairy peaks".............speaking of that...

IMG_5554.jpg

An "Amish Bush"....not a hairy one, but I had to take the scissors and give her a trim.....................
The lower leaves were starting to yellow,......... to much water below.........................

IMG_5555.jpg

A couple of Cumari ...(Spicegiest)......these are...fuzzy!

IMG_5573.jpg

A tray of Maui Purple with a couple of sidecars...

IMG_5580.jpg

I keep my T8's as close as an inch from the tops of the tallest leaves.

IMG_5576.jpg

Even though its only about 10 degrees outdoors my lower level grow averages around 75 deg with 39% humidity.
My upstairs grow room averages 85 deg with 45% humidity...

Be back shortly with a few more....

a few more...

IMG_5533.jpg

Well compared to last years 25 overwinters this season I only brought in 5 plants. Two of them I gave away and one of them never really took off.
Here is the two that I kept and may use them for crossing purposes. A Pimenta de Neyde and a 3 year old Scotch Bonnet.

IMG_5541.jpg

This is the Scotch Bonnet that I photo'ed last week. I moved it into a 10 gal container and placed it under my 400w metal halides.
It has jumped quite a bit in a week........................must be the stuff I pipe in the room................the "Bob Marley" music............. :D

IMG_5539.jpg

First pod to ripen.........yep, that's the Bonnet/Brain cross........small in size but most of the first few pods are. As long as it has heat I'll be happy!
Well I'm out of plant shots for the week but here's the meal!

IMG_5483.jpg

Not exactly the"Flint-Stone-Age" portion but this 30oz "Prime Dry-Aged Rib-Eye" will be Rock-in when I get through with it!

Ingredients: Red Potato, Chives, Baby Spinach, Olive Oil, Sour Cream, Mascapone Cheese, "Steak", Cherry Wood (for smoking), Nutmeg, Smoked Douglah and Chipotle Pods (ground up for steak rub), Pink Hawaiian Sea Salt............Yaba-Daba-Doo !

IMG_5487.jpg

Sear Steak with grill lid down for 5 minutes a side over burner's flanked by Cherrywood. I don't know whats hotter the Molton-Lava Douglah rub or the small fire in the grill........... . Some of you are probably thinking, why didn't I soak the wood? I kept it dry for the added heat (800+ deg) and to permeate the meat before the fibers close. If I were doing the "Low and Slow" roast, then I would have wet down the wood and cooked it for the lond duration.... Bake the Red Potato at 450 indoors or on the grill for about an hour, until crusty on the outside, fluffy on the inside...

IMG_5490.jpg

After the meat has been seared I "up end it" over the middle burner and the lid is once again closed. I like my steaks done rare at around 120/125 deg internal temperature You can use an instant read thermometer, I use the touch method for firmness, or better yet my internal alarm..........."My Growling Stomach!"................hah
Once done as desired bring steak indoors to rest (tented under foil).....meanwhile...

IMG_5498.jpg

While the steak is resting, wilt down Spinach in 2 tbl of Olive Oil. Once done, add Sour Cream, Mascapone Cheese, a couple of swipes on a microplane with the Whole Nutmeg, Salt and Pepper. Stir to coat and remove covered pan from heat.

IMG_5512.jpg

Here's the plating.....what goes better with this "Bedrock" size meal than a bottle of "Stone" Pale Ale.........

IMG_5525.jpg

Ah............Done the way I like it!.......Even "Mr Slate" would have liked this one!.....

Thanks for stopping by............see ya all next weekend !

Hurry up! The Maui's look awesome! So does everything else!

Thanks Jamison !,
Now that this is done for the day I can relax until we head out to watch the game.........hmm relax, what's that.........ahahaha

Dude, that chow is to die for. Perfect looking rib eye, which just happens to be my favorite steak! Glad I already had breakfast! Oh yeah, the OW's look great, too!

Everything looks so healthy. When is your plant out?

Hey Doc,
Things are just starting up here, but if all goes well I'll put my hoop frames together in April. Getting the tomatoes in there to harden off first then the peppers buy the 1st of May. Hopefully if the weather cooperates I can plant out in my containers and beds by the 2nd week in May.

Love stopping by your grow setup is just amazing. PDN x SB or SB X PDN that would be an interesting to see on what characteristics it take by the F3 stage and on. Good luck through the season but you never need it.

Greg your babies are rocketing past mine that as you know are growing in da real sun, every ting looking great on your side mon!!! BTW one of your seeds (Butch T Scorpion) has popped, hooked and sprung leaves faster than the MoA's but I guess it's been in Mama earth a bit longer :D I have 5 of 6 pop on MoA and don't expect the last to go but no leaves and only one hook so far. I believe I might have the first helmet head with the first one but not sure yet as I buried it a little to see if the soil helps scrape it off. So you said "what goes better with this "Bedrock" size meal than a bottle of "Stone" Pale Ale," I’d say a neat pour of Appleton Blue Añejo Rum ;) Hope you know I jest my rum drinking Chicago brethren, I enjoy Ale & beer too and will probably be tipping a few esta noche. You do great food, so good that this will be the only post I make today, as now I have to run and eat ... I'm not joking either, enjoy da bowl tonight and see ya around the forums :)

Oh man Greg you just got down and dirty with all that good food... Love the pics and your transplant looks professional and clean... Keep em coming, its just goin to get better here on out..
