soil ProudMarineDad's easy soil mix

I searched back 10 pages, but couldn't find PMD's original posting of the easy soil mix recipe, from a canna site.  I'm reposting a link to the recipe below, since I have it bookmarked.  I intend to use the basic recipe, plus what ever additional nutritional amendments I can afford.  Now, for my question.  Could composted chicken manure be subbed for the fert, i.e., Espoma or Dr. Earth, et al...?

I don't see why not as long as it was composted good. It's not as balanced as Tomato Tone but it would still work.
By the way that soil mix is not my own it was posted by another member on that forum. I only passed on the information to those looking at organic growing.

Would bat and seabird guano be a good substitute for alfalfa meal/crab meal/neem meal etc? I have a high P bat guano and high N seabird guano on hand, along with Espoma tomato tone and Jobe's organics tomato ferts, but don't have anywhere local (that I've found yet) to source the different meals.
Also, is there any danger if the mix isn't cooked at all, or not cooked long enough?

I used to brew bat guano tea for my canna plants but this last grow year I've been top feeding with seabird guano and high p guano. I also top feed with bone meal once a week. Tbl of each works just fine. If want a good mix without top feeding check out subcools soil mix on hightimes website. There's a whole article about it

Those will work MeatHead but I am not sure of what amounts you would use. If the soil is not cycled and it has a lot of amendments in it then yes it can burn the plants.

Most of the top growers I have spoken to laugh at Subcools "supersoil" which is not as good as the soil mix I posted the link to.

I've never used his mix, reason why I feed my plants tea or top feed. Allows me to control the level of nutrients I'm feeding my plants. I would never reuse soil indoors either, I like to dump it into my garden beds.

So you are growing hydro only?
I grow outdoors only as hydro is too much work. ;)

Yeah, I should have been more clear. I meant you were the originator posting it to this forum, here.

Two more questions...When you made your soil mix, did you hydrate it before putting it into your bags, or after? I'm not sure how you're supposed to wet the soil like a wrung out sponge if you water the soil in the bag/pot, without completely soaking the soil, that is, if you want the soil completely hydrated.

It looks like granite dust is a good sub. What about decomposed granite? Maybe too coarse?

Subcool's mix is too hot and layering is not the way to make a soil. It's all hype but some people seem to think it works.

I was told to invite you over to the Organic forum at GC. ;)

No problem my friend. I just didn't want to take credit for something that was not mine. ;)

I watered it with a watering can and mixed it up real well in a wheelbarrow and then scooped it into the containers.

You want it to be a powder and granite rock powder is good for micro-nutrients as well as an anchoring substrate for fungal hyphae.
Granite, glacial, basalt and others are all good. A mix of them all would be best for diversity but use what you can.

Yeah I need to join. I found out how I like to grow and it seems to work for me. I can control the level of nutes by too feeding them and letting it slowly feed in. I also use all of the old age organics line products. Which site is it again?

About the ingredients in that link...if you use Neem cake make sure it is high quality or it's not worth buying. One source for good Neem cake is buildasoil.com. That is where I purchased mine.

Great site PMD. Just took advantage of the free sample kit to try out their nutrient pack.

Yeah I'm hooked :high: on that link. I'm on like page 62 now.

I've did a re-amend of 9 cf last week, and built a 3 cf from scratch with this recipe

not listed is 0.9 cups of alfalfa pellets

The perlite and sphagnum were pre-wetted, but I also put a quart of strong alfalfa tea in there hopefully to move things along.
I combined the ingredients and  pushed it through a 1/4" mesh to help mix and fluff it.

Nice. Interested in seeing how it works out for you. :)
