Pulpiteer 2015 - New Year, New Hopes

I've been working towards 2015 for a bit now, so I figured I might as well get the glog fired up.

Quick recap: I'm a pastor was moved by the denomination last summer (happens every so often in my profession), so 2014 was not great. The soil in the new garden spot needs a ton of work. So this year is a year I hope to move forward.

One benefit of the new place is a 10 by 10 (or so) area in the basement that I can use as a plant room.  I've been working on that lately.

The room was previously used as a small wood shop, so it has a large table and a simple, homemade wooden shelving set up.  Here is a shot of it with the lights temporarily in place for my over winters.  I've already taken out one level in order to have a large growing area in the middle.  Also, on the far end, you can see I began a simple extension.  I wish I had a picture of how it was when I first started.  There were narrow shelves on that far wall.  I tore all of that out.  Also, there was a ton of paint and stuff on the shelving unit, that I had to move elsewhere.

growstep1.jpg

I got some insulation from a big box store (Menards), and began cutting and duct taping it in place.

growstep2.jpg

I attached the vanity lighting to 1 1/2 by 3, then screwed it in from the top so the screw head was flush with the upper level, and the lighting was as far up as it would go.

growstep3.jpg

Insulation in, lights on. On the top level I have 2 four foot t8 bulbs. 6500k color. The heat from the CFL's on the mid level make the top compartment warm. I hope warm enough for seeds to sprout.

growstep4.jpg

Since I want to be able to have loose plants on the mid level, but don't want water seeping into the wood or down into the lights on the bottom level, I took some cardboard from our packing boxes and made a custom fit box for that second level. I then lined the box with 2 garbage bags I sliced up the sides in order to make plastic sheeting.

growstep5.jpg

For the bottom level, I added insulation on the floor, since I figured cold air would come up from that. I also bought an 8 bulb, 4 foot, T5 grow light, which you can see hanging from the top of that bottom level. Finally, I thought I'd put a little 10 gallon fish tank in the bottom. This will provide humidity and when I get water from it to water the plants, it'll be full of nitrogen. Oh, and in the tank are 2 Firemouth cichlids.

growstep6.jpg

Also on the bottom level, to the right, I put in an exhaust fan. I got 2 of these little fans. They were on sale because they were out of season. I cut a custom hole in the insulation and stuck it in. I know, it looks factory made, right?

growstepfan.jpg

And here is the whole set up. Maybe you can see the second exhaust fan. I put it in the upper level to the right to blow across the seedlings when the come up. Also, my thought was that I could push the hot air to the left where there is a gap running down the side wall, and maybe the bottom fan would pull it all the way to the lower level and push out the cold air.

growstep8.jpg

Of course, you need to cover the front in order to keep the heat in. I took some large cardboard boxes and covered the front with Mylar emergency blankets.

growcover.jpg

I put two screws on each side on the very top, and ran some wire through the top of the card board wall. And I hang them on that to hold it up.

Ok that's my 10 picture limit.  I'll try to make it back tomorrow to cover my overwinters and the seeds I just put down, as well as the soil rehab project.

It's been fun to get this going.  Hopefully it'll pay off.

Thanks for stopping by!

Andy, that plot is going to love you with the permaculture effort your putting in on it. Great list of pepper with a nice variety of heat and favors. Have you introduced the new congregation to the notion of the pepper draft yet? Really great that they're behind your gardening and helping out so much, looking forward to swing what else you'll be putting in.

Merry Christmas Brother!

I can't wait to see the seeds break the surface!

Next weekend I plant my seeds. A bit late but we're gone for the holidays; hopefully lots of hooks when we return ;)

That's impressive, my friend

And you have two little starts to boot!

I hope the not Giant White Hab grows well for you.
I've decided to start calling it a Yellow Scorpion since
so many pods have stingers/tails!

Thank you! It's funny, that hybrid you sent won me over.  It produced for me when many things did not, and it had a great taste to it.  And they look beautiful.

The vanity lights are a great idea. I've been reading up on how to build something like this homemade, but vanity fixtures can be pretty cheap & likely safer than what I'd build myself with no experience with electrical work. Do you think the fixture could accommodate Y splitters with 2 CFLs in each? I plan on stealing or modifying your idea. Thanks for posting it.

Vanity lights is not a bad way to go.  You'll need to "pigtail" the cord on so you can plug it in, so check that out.  Actually, here is a link to an earlier glog I had that shows how I did it.  You'll see an earlier attempt at a grow area there as well.  As far as the Y splitters, it should be fine, but it'll depend on the wattage of the bulbs and the watt limit of the sockets.  When you buy your vanity, make sure to get the sockets that can take a 100w bulb, and you should be fine.  The large CFL's I have there are 105 watts.  The smaller ones will be like 30 or 40 watts at most, so you could have two of those in a 100 watt socket.

One other thing to consider is you can get an 8 bulb T5 4 foot grow light for $120 on ebay.  At least that is what I got mine for.  You'll want to weigh out all the costs and consider what will work best.  The vanity will cost less, but by the time you buy the vanities, extension cord, Y splitters, and CFL's (make sure to get 6500 for the color temp) you'll be getting pricey depending on the area you want to light.

Anyway, best of luck!

Man, I'm hoping so!
I was hoping to do fewer varieties, and then Judy came up with all these crazy ones at pepperlover, and last year Coheed sent me a bunch of crazy varieties and then... well you now how it goes.
The church has been great as far as supporting my gardening habit, which is cool.  I have 2 guys from the new church ready for the draft and I'll have several from the old church here as well, so there should be opportunity for much drama and entertainment for me.  ;)

Merry Christmas to you too!

Me too.  I'm curious how these rock wool cubes will work, I've never used them.
I'll be looking forward to your new glog - maybe you can hit 200 pages on it in 2015 you slacker!
Merry Christmas!

Hey, Buddy, bad news and good news.

First the bad news:

I hope some postal employee didn't get a faceful of powder!

The good news:  I'll send it again right away!

Oh man, I wondered if you sent stuff. I was checking my mail box with great anticipation every day :)
At least it's located.  I'll look forward to receiving it!  Thank you!

Andy I'm digging your complete set-up !
Wow those overwinters are going to town....no dought you'll have buds on them soon.

I've never heard of that, it's a great idea, I would want to be able to see the fish! It would drive my dog crazy! :)

I think it'd be fun to play around with sometime.  As someone who likes having fish and growing stuff, this is a natural match too.  Let me know if you try any of this, I'd love to see how it goes for you!

Thanks Greg! Good call on the buds. I need to get a picture, but I just noticed some buds on the BOC just the other day.  I'm wondering if I'll actually get pods on it.  I know the light and nutrient needs can change, so we'll see.
Thanks for stopping in!

Shouldn't be a problem getting pods to form off the Bhuts...most of the Red Bhut Jolokia's I've started in doors in the past have all produced small peppers. Could be the strain but the peppers tend to form prior to the flowers completely opening.....(pretty heavy self pollination happening).

Although, you may not have ripening on the pods before plant out., since most super hots take 120ish days to ripen.......certain Hab varities will show the coloring very early indoors

I usually bring a 3 gal Bhut plant with me to the conservatory plant sales in Apr/May......it sure shocks folks to see 2 ft plants with gnarly peppers growing.

Cool - that's good to know.  It'll be cool to see them growing, even if they aren't really ready until plant out.  That's still some early peppers.
The rest of my varieties are pubescens, not sure how they'll do.  I think I had some small pods on my over winters last year before plant out.  They take so long to mature, the overwinters really help with them.  I'm hoping to get my first Giant Mexican Rocoto pod this year off my overwinter.

It's interesting too that you've had that luck with the Red Bhuts.  I know it's been around awhile and isn't as *sexy*, but that pepper has so many different things going for it from taste to heat to growth, that it's going to be an old stand by in many gardens for years, I think.

I've got a few pictures to share, so I thought I'd do an update.  Nothing big.

First off, here's a wider shot so you can see where the grow shelf is in relation to the new grow light/overwinter area.  I just threw up some 2x4's on the left there and made a quick makeshift room where there was none.  Again, the insulation part of that is from the church dumpster, where the preschool threw away packaging for frozen cookie dough, I think.  It's an insulated wrap with a shiny side, so perfect and at the perfect price.

setup.jpg

Here's a close up of one of my overwinters in there. I think this is a Red Rocoto, but it may be a yellow manzano.

Some cool stuff with my overwinters - as Greg suggested above, I've got buds coming in:

On my Bhut Orange Copenhagen

And on a pubescens

The two little peppers from the grow shop are adjusting. I think the move from just rock wool to being in the dirt (still in the rockwool) was a bit of a shock to them. I read somewhere that can happen. To be clear, I did not tear the cube away because it would damage the roots. But just in covering it with dirt and watering that way, it was rough on them. I think I'll wait longer with the next batch.

Here is the Scotch Bonnet

And the Aji Pinguita de Mono (sorry for the blurry picture)

pinguita.jpg

And speaking of the next batch... I've got some hooks coming up!
Wild Brazil wins the title!

hooks.jpg

Finally, here's the wall opposite the growshelf, just to give you an idea of the space I'm working with. It's got that large table there that was used for woodworking before. It'll be great to work with seeds and repotting on it. In the lower right you can see the two 5 gallon bucket set ups that I have my vermi compost going in. The space is shaping up nicely!

Alright - thanks for stopping by!

Just a couple pics

First off - I received this in the mail yesterday - Thank you Paul!!!  And as I believe most others said, the color is amazing on these.

Here are some updated pictures of the gift seedlings:

And the Scotch Bonnet (which is looking better by the day)

I had some seedlings pop. Last I posted I had 2 hooks. Well they both came up along with another, so that's 3 Wild Brazil plants

And a CAP273 Peru came up as well. It's a pubescens.

That's all I've got today, Merry Christmas everyone!

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone!

This is the wonderful gift themed entry of the glog.

First, some guys from the church who are electricians came by, added a new circuit or two and installed some new plugs.  I have this up high and another exactly like it closer to the floor, so my grow shelf is hooked up!

plug.jpg

Another person from the congregation, knowing my love of gardening gave me some gifts from her vermicompost bin.

worms.jpg

I've got some peppers that are popping whose seeds were gifts last year from Coheed

A row of some Pubescens from Guatemala that are hooking nicely!

hooks.jpg

And - I'm excited about this one - a Galapagoense (the hook in the center)

galap.jpg

I used some Christmas money today to purchase some soil less medium from the nursery in town. I asked if he carried ProMix, and he said he started using this stuff instead. I'm curious to see how it goes. I'll start the seeds in this, and then move them up to a soil mix full of good nutes.

baccto.jpg

And finally - I received this amazing gift in the mail just this morning from Pic1 - thank you so much Greg! Tons of wonderful goodness in here, plus some Unknown Brain Strain Cross (brown) seeds. Thank you!

So, I feel very blessed and fortunate. God has blessed me with wonderful friends and relationships, and this website has been a great way to connect with some very generous and kind folks as well. So thank you all.

And here's the whole Pulpiteer family on Christmas Eve in front of the tree at the church:

Thanks for stopping by!

Very nice family picture, Andy.  A very handsome group!

Super Christmas gifts!  I can't think of a more deserving person,
my friend.  I hope you and your family enjoy the remaining days
of the holiday season!

I've got just a short update.

I am going to plant in stages this year.  I've already planted my wilds and pubescens, and they are doing ok.  The Wild Brazil is doing the best, but the others are slow.

Today was the day for my superhots.

So I soaked them in chamomile tea (an antifungal) for several hours:

soak.jpg

Then I put them in the seed starting mix I just purchased (and pictured above - the baccto). I'll do the fertilized mix when I pot up.

Here is what I planted with the first number being the seeds I used, the second the number of cells. For many I planted more than one seed in a cell. I'm keeping track of the number of seeds to get a better feel for germination this year.

1. 7 Pot Primo 8, 4
2. 7 Pot Brain Strain Red 6, 4
3. 7 Pot Yellow 8, 4
4. 7 Pot Barrackpore Chocolate 8, 4
5. Bhut Jolokia Peach Select (pepperlover) 12, 6
6. Bhut Jolokia Red 12, 6
7. Bhut Jolokia White 8, 4
8. Bhut Orange Copenhagen 6, 4
9. Bih Jolokia 8 4
10. Carolina Reaper 12, 8
11. Devil's Brain 8, 4
12. Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion 12, 6
13. Jonah's Yellow Brain 8, 4
14. Peach Congo 8, 4
15. Trinidad Scorpion Chocolate 7, 6
16. Trinidad Scorpion Yellow 8, 4

I planted some of the Rocoto that did not germinate well
20. Pineapple Rocoto 5, 2

And finally a late comer to the list, the Unknown Brain Strain Cross Brown

50. UBSC Brown 8, 6

And here are the cells and labels:

labeled.jpg

Finally, I am a huge Michigan State fan and an alumn, so these past few years of football have been amazing. They made an amazing comeback against Baylor on New Year's Day. The next day they arrived back in East Lansing, and since that's only a half an hour away from me now, I took my oldest two kids down to greet the players as they arrived. They got to meet 3 of the players, including Trae Waynes, who will probably be a first round draft pick in this year's NFL draft. Very cool.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe New Year. Thanks for stopping by!
