Said to me years ago by an old man. Didn't understand it at the time.

I now know the meaning full well, it has played itself out many times for me. Researched it and found it has many slight variances, as well as being attributed to many different people. Original author I suppose is "unknown." But, in all forms it strikes the same indelible message:
