food Rice thread: good stuff!

It's just a japanese style of rice. I'd like to say I planned it this way and this dish was meant to be some grand design but in reality it's the only thing I had. Lol I ran out of jasmin rice otherwise I would have used that. Bought it when I made sushi one time.

Shirakiku is just a brand. They sell several varieties of rice grown in California. Cal Rose is likely their most popular. Their Koshihikari rice though is OUTSTANDING for US grown!!!

Treat yourself to this sometime if you like short grain. Very few are as good or better. The only ones that are in the same league are Hitomebore, Akitaotome and Kagayaki Select which is also a type of US grown Koshihikari. CalRose is not even on the same planet as far as a sushi rice goes. All the others i mentioned work VERY well though.

Tamaki Gold is killer too if you can find it. This stuff is insanely rare in my area. http://www.tamakimai.com/product01.html

Long story short, i used it for sushi because its the closest thing my grocery store had and I read that it would work for sushi. It worked but the flavor of it isn't really that impressive.

Look for Kukuho Rose pink label if you like CalRose types. I get it all the time because its cheaper and pretty good. Our Costco finally got it back in stock after not having it for many months. Walmart usually stocks Botan Calrose which is almost as good.

Yeah im a rice snob but i have the luxury of several markets that sell the better rice at a reasonable prices. :D Its still rather pricey at nearly $25/15lb but if you like a true short grain its well worth it. Tamaki Gold will set you back nearly double that amount if you can find it. Japanese grown Koshihikari shipped to the US will set you back $100/5lbs after you get bent over for shipping from Malaysia. Exports from Japan are very tightly regulated. Virtually none of it is exported to the USA

Made a chicken stir fry last night with purple cabbage and jasmine rice. Purple cabbage isn't necessarily my first choice of veggie in a stir fry and I can't say I've ever used it for this purpose I don't think but it actually worked out nice.

Add a scoop of mac salad.

Plate lunch!

K den.

Mac salad.

There's a chain restaurant here called Ono Hawaiian bbq and they have some pretty good mac salad. Served over steamed cabbage. It's pretty good. Not sure if they're a national chain..

Ya' know...

I don't reckon I want my mac salad from a chain.

Make it myself.

Or maybe Helena's.

Funny we made it to Helena's super small parking lot,

But she got sick that day.

So mrs. blues ejected.

And we ended up in some shithole touristy joint eating crap.

Because we were hungry.

And mrs. blues is the boss.

For those that don't know.

mrs. blues is like sex and pizza.

When she's good.

She's great.

When she's bad.

She's still pretty fucking good.
